    R.I.P. Ian Holm

Hate to just pile on more LotR when he's done so much more but it's just too damn fitting. I sit beside the fire and think of how the world will be when winter comes without a spring that I shall ever see. For still there are so many things that I have never seen: in every wood in every spring there is a different green. I sit beside the fire and think of people long ago and people who will see a world that I shall never know. RIP

  4. The piano intro is lovely... so theatrical, too. To me, it has always spoken of the origins of the character of Peter Pan, while being a perfect simple prelude for the magic to come. While the song... isn't it supposed to be terrible? As in Elementary-School-Play terrible?

which is all the more surprising given his acting style. Holm wouldn't just articulate his lines differently - he would play Bilbo's character differently with each take, until the director liked what he saw. Playing opposite him, McKellen confessed he "could never do that." Looking at the finished scene, you would never know. Now that right there is the mark of a truly great actor. It also bears mentioning that he was the very first choice for Bilbo.

  9. Rest in Peace Ian Holm, our dear friend. 88 years was far too short a time to spend with such an admirable soul. I do believe you are quite ready for another adventure...

  10. Those are references for the fans. Any attempt to take continuity seriously is foolish and a waste of time.

  11. I've always been more lukewarm on the Desert Chase than most, I think. The sequence is amazing in the film, but so much of the Nazi music is (by design) plodding and pounding that it's just less fun away from picture. Meanwhile, where's the love for "Escape from Venice," "Scherzo for Motorcycle and Orchestra," "The Basket Game," and "The Mine Car Chase"?

  12. HBO & Spitfire Audio recently teamed up for a worldwide scoring competiton. It was a great opportunity to score a car chase. This is my entry: I posted a breakdown of the cue in the youtube video description. Please post your submission here if you also participated.

  15. I must correct myself: 1884 and 1901. Written probably before and in between those years. The German of that time has a particular use of words that have since fallen out of use. Cost me just under $200 (which is quite a bargain for these items, mostly because they got a new binding and cardboard covers, which are still over 80 years old). The five volumes of illustrations probably will be up to a 1000 bucks... These are the copies I got (plus the DE of seaQuest DSV to show that it is indeed me): Like with CDs, I sometimes just need the physical thing. If you're curious, these two volumes I got are also available as high-resolution scans from several university libraries (look for the Download button): Vol. 1: https://digi.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/diglit/dehio1892bd1 Vol. 2: https://digi.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/diglit/dehio1901bd2

  16. This sounds like opportunistic attention seeking to me, from a girl who knew exactly what she was doing when she "direct messaged" the guy all those young, dumb n horny years ago. If the film doesn't release till Xmas and this story doesn't blow up (a quick google of the search term "West Side Story" returned 0 results in relation to this story), nothing will change. "Movie might be cancelled" lol get a friggin' grip ya rampant twitterwhore.

  17. I think Alien 5 is a bad idea, born from pure nostalgia. Hill & Giler give me more confidence than Blomkamp, but meh. Ripley's character is done, been there done that. She had a meaningful end in Alien3, bringing her back wouldn't add anything new. I'd much rather have Ridley's prequel trilogy completed.

  18. I think he just wrote it for the end credits and then it got tracked into the telegraphic scene in the film, and was used to open the OST. It's still mostly film cues but yes the amount of album-only material is much larger than most of his other scores. It all works really awesomely (except the Jim Taylor track which I think is kinda pointless)

Agreed! It's actually incredible that, right after Ash, Ridley Scott 'created' another milestone 'android' with Roy Batty.

In case anyone didn't know the reference so I don't look like a complete weirdo. Holm was an amazing comic actor as well as dramatic, and he has probably the most hilarious performance in Brazil.

  23. We need more votes. We can't let Hook win. The song at the start is simply unforgivable.

  25. Received the DE today; good and quick shipping from England to Bavaria. Looking forward to listening to it! The original CD was my 14th CD purchase on (no kidding) April 1, 1997...together, amazingly in retrospect, and not-planned-as-such, the OST for The Hunt for Red October. I remember that in those days, I had to drive to Munich to a specialty store to get soundtracks! Only 23 years ago...FML. I'll keep the OST, because:

  29. Took time to find a rather common gif? And your only response is to ridicule him instead of standing your ground on the points you've made or maybe ignoring it? With this and all the other talk about "progressives" ruining everything, I can't help but wonder if maybe the one with issues isn't the guy you're responding to.

  30. The Temple of doom would be my choice in first position, because of the theme of the Slave children parade is better than any other theme of the Desert Chase (except the main indy theme obviously) In second place, I choose The Last Crusade action theme because is so dramatic at the end and in the beggining, but i think that is worse in the medium of the cue. Desert Chase in the third position because it's so obsesive with the Indy theme but this theme not sound as brilliant as it sounds in the action of the temple of doom Jungle chase would be my fourth option but I like it also very much. Notes: Indy2 -> 10 Indy3 -> 8,5 Indy1 -> 8,5 Indy4 -> 7,5

  31. Desert Chase, easy. TOD is the runner-up for me - other than Hook, I haven't found its equal in Williams' work in terms of over-the-top, super-energetic climactic action sequences. But I still prefer the rather leaner, more focused Desert Chase, which still packs quite a wallop. The intensity is allowed to build in a way that TOD never manages. TLC is a little anemic by comparison. There's still great stuff in there but I would never put it in anywhere near the same league as Desert Chase. Jungle Chase features some of my favorite writing in KOTCS. That ostinato he brings in toward the end has a classic Williams vibe that I enjoy, and that's otherwise in pretty short supply in this score. But again, it's just not enough to rival Desert Chase, which never fails to dazzle me.

Wow! Blast from the past right there!! In the meantime, believe it or not, I actually found the film and it now comfortably sits as part of the rest of the collection. Haven't watched it for a while, but I remember quite enjoying it.
