So... if JNH scored Buckbeak's Flight? I know you might think sacrilege since that is one of Williams' most famous cue but give it a listen with an open mind. I think had JNH scored that scene, he would have come up with something equally soaring and memorable. This is scored with Newt's main theme.2 points -
Montezuma-Cortez: the next Spielberg project?
Pieter Boelen and one other reacted to Romão for a topic
These news are months old, but apparently this is indeed going forward as a mini series. Spielberg wll produce. Ciro Guerra (who directed the incredible Embrace of the Serpent) will direct and Steve Zallian will write the script based on a previous treatment by Dalton Trumbo. Besides the previously announced casting of Bardem as Cortés, they have also cast Moctezuma and Doña Marina (or La Malinche): https://deadline.com/2020/02/tenoch-huerta-yoshira-escarrega-join-javier-bardem-in-amazons-hernan-cortes-limited-series-1202864677/ I really hope this goes forward, This is one of most fascinating and interesting historical events I have ever read about. It will probably work best as a mini series, but I would absolutely love if Williams scored this, as unlikely as that is2 points -

Here at last, head over to the website to grab the full score for Goblet of Fire! We've included a movie-length audio file to sync up with your copy of the film whether you use audio software or not. You can also grab each cue as individual tracks. There's a digital booklet pdf that includes all of the program notes in one place as well. We look forward to hearing your reactions to the whole thing! Let us know if you have any problems getting those files from Google Drive (it's the best platform for balancing copyright issues and accessibility to our audience at this point). Hope you enjoy!2 points -

My calculations were correct then, give or take a minute or two for Episode VII: So for the entire Saga, that would be two CDs for Episode I: The Phantom Menace (two hours and 30 minutes of music), two CDs for Episode II: Attack of the Clones (two hours and ten minutes of music), two CDs for Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (two hours and 15 minutes of music), two CDs for Episode IV: A New Hope (an hour and 32 minutes of music), two CDs for Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (two hours and five minutes of music), two or three CDs for Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (two hours and 40 minutes of music), three CDs for Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2 hours and 56 minutes of music), three CDs for Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (three hours and three minutes of music) three or four CDs for Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (three hours and 46 minutes of music).1 point -

Once reacted to TheUlyssesian for a topic
This is indeed lovely. I cannot get past how moving the friendship and family themes are in any guise and Leaving Hogwarts remains a powerful cue no matter how or where it is used. I daresay I prefer this music to what we got in the movie. What a great loss we suffered when the franchise dropped these two themes and only retained the main theme. I feel these 2 themes equally make Harry potter what it is.1 point -
Sorry but I cringed the whole way through that response video. There are plenty of valid and respectful criticisms in the comments. I’ve been reading through the winners announcement thread on vi-control and boy Christian and Paul Thomson, the other founder of spitfire, are responding with such petulance, and with ad hominem attacks at new members who dare voice an opinion. Also, Hans Zimmer popped in to say that anybody who was not happy with the results will never make it in the industry so that was fun.1 point

The Doctor Who Thread.....
DarthDementous reacted to Sweeping Strings for a topic
Recently watched The War Machines, whose 'big bad' is a super-computer called WOTAN installed at the top of the then-new Post Office Tower. WOTAN is designed to link up with other computer systems around the world in a problem-solving capacity ... so that's basically the internet, in a First Doctor story from 1966. Crikey. Currently watching Underworld, a Fourth Doctor story apparently unpopular with the fandom due to its extensive use of budget-conscious early bluescreen ... must say, to me it's no worse than having the actors wandering through what are clearly caves made of fibreglass in a BBC TV Centre studio. Speaking of Tom Baker am having a great time with Scratchman, his 2019 Fourth Doctor novel that started life as a proposed movie script written by himself and co-star Ian Marter during Baker's tenure but which they were ultimately unable to raise the budget for. New issue of Doctor Who Magazine has the results of their most recent reader's poll ... the three least popular episodes from this year's series? Can You Hear Me, Praxeus and Orphan 55. Bears out my opinion that the vast majority of us don't tune in to be lectured.1 point -

Glad you enjoyed it! It's the version as heard in the Spielberg/Williams Collaboration Vol.3 album from 2017 as conducted by JW. I didn't know there was a recording conducted by Ben himself otherwise I would have used that in the show!1 point -
Thanks for the info, I thought there must be a lot more actual recordings. A lot of it would be bad takes and false starts, but since the Anthology box set way back when had about five different Main Title takes on it - and all good takes to my ear at least - I've wondered how much good stuff they actually have hidden away! Those Main Title takes are all of course the exact same cue but very different and well worth hearing. If there's rights issues involved then that's a problem but maybe a few highlights could be cleared? The Anthology boxset felt like a miracle from above back in the 90s so maybe history can repeat itself!1 point

It made that terrible scene so much more enjoyable. oh my lord, those YouTube comments are hilarious. so many cranky people. Oh, that figure would definitely not be all the raw takes. Very often cues are assembled from more than one take anyway. Sandy DeCrescent (orchestra personnel contractor) mentioned JW usually gets down something like 10-15 minutes of finished music per session, which is actually a lot considering the complexity of a lot of it and allowing for rehearsal time. So, Mike Mattesino mentioned in his recent Legacy of John Williams Podcast interview (shoutout to @TownerFan!) that they often just keep recording between takes at these sessions, capturing comments from the podium, false starts, etc. He mentioned he’d love to include some of that in expanded releases, but Williams is opposed, and there’s complications with the union contracts involved (which also comes up with session video footage and photos). Even those Beatles sets don’t include every last take, just ones that are different enough that they’re basically the equivalent of alternates.1 point -

Tydirium reacted to Manakin Skywalker for a topic
I see your point, but it doesn't really apply in this case. A composer in a professional situation would not be able to alter the sound effects and dialogue. Not only would they not even have access to that audio, but if for some reason if they did and altered it, that's a guaranteed firing. He altered the sound effects, which were against the rules of the competition. In a less competitive setting that wouldn't have been much of an issue (like if he were competing in the scoring competitions we used to have here on JWFan), but because this was a more professional competition where the winning prize was over $20k worth of products...1 point -

Rey's theme is massively overrated on this forum. And btw. I'm supposedly a Potterhead here, whereas in the other thread I am a Hook reactionary. Manakin Skywalker reacted to BrotherSound for a topic
It really is! The amount of unheard music is roughly as long as the entire Episode IV score. We actually have exactly total lengths of the music recorded for all 3 sequel trilogy films. The TROS number is directly from JW, during his KUSC interview earlier this year: The Force Awakens 174 minutes (2h 54m) The Last Jedi 183 minutes (3h 3m) The Rise of Skywalker 226 minutes (3h 46m) Sequel Trilogy total: 583 minutes (9h 43m) I’m not sure if the TFA figure includes the JW trailer scores recorded in November 2014 and April 2015. Due to tracking, it’s difficult to get exact numbers, but if the Disney soundtrack gods ever decide to smile upon us, we can expect about 50 minutes more TFA (though bits of some unused cues already turned up in bonus features), 35 minutes of TLJ, and 90 minutes for TROS. This would be a combination of completely unused cues, bits of released cues that were edited out, and alternates. All three ST scores would require 3 CDs each to fit everything!1 point -

You would initially think that the backlash is a bunch of sore losers, but even people who didn’t take part in the competition are appalled. They removed the likes vs dislikes of their winner announcement video because last I checked it was approaching 60% dislikes and the comments are almost unanimously questioning the results. It’s not enough to be different, if it doesn’t also legitimately score the scene well. I question how they listened to over 11,000 entries and gave everyone a fair shot because at least one of the runners up has a fairly established YouTube subscriber base and their entry was honestly nothing special compared to several others I listened to. I too think the original scene is terrible.1 point

Wonderful conversation again Maurizio. Thank you. I have used the same JW music to get my kids to sleep as Ben and I have to admit that JW is also in my top 3 composers(not only movie composers) What version/recording was The New Beginning? I was listening to this while driving and wasn't sure what I heard, some different woodwind stuff? 🤔🤔🤔1 point -
So, I’ve added a few seconds before and after the deleted bit to provide better context how it would have fit: And here’s the raw original scene without music, including with Vader dialog still spoken by David Prowse and some very squeaky droids wheeling about: This footage ended up being repurposed for the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special, for which James Earl Jones recorded new dialog.1 point

Westworld Scoring Competition
Muad'Dib reacted to Docteur Qui for a topic
Maybe I’m just biased because it was so poorly executed in the show. The guy in the scene isn’t injured, he’s drugged up with a substance called “genre” that changes his hallucinations/emotional reactions suddenly to align with common film genres, like noir, romance etc. It’s a nifty idea but atrociously realised in the show. The scene was originally tracked with Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries” for some reason. The editing is glacially slow, the acting is flat-out weird and there’s no other cars in the middle of this supposedly high-octane sequence because they clearly only had 3 or 4 of the futuristic cars in their budget.1 point -

So this is what I think the main title should have been. With a haunting version of the main theme to introduce the main title - eerie, enigmatic, magical and something that awakens your curiosity. It is a wondrous main theme. It really should be more famous. JNH should use it more in his score too!1 point -
