  1. Listened to this again. What a masterpiece! The best part is how all the related themes are given time to show up and blossom, statements of the Flying Theme (as almost a synthesis of The Call and Friendship, which we've heard plenty of) feel incredibly well-earned and satisfying when they're not overplayed like on the OST - even when it soars in Halloween, it's over a shaky foundation and lands with a thud, it's just not the time for it yet, not taking the spotlight from Bike Chase -, how after the brilliant overture we take an extended time to dedicate gorgeous quiet harp textures to relationship growth, until the threat starts creeping back in and pushing the score to start being more extroverted, the lovely 3-cue setpiece in the middle (Get Drunk, Frogs, Kiss), wonderful further developments, falling action and a fantastic build to a pitch perfect extended finale. Still worthy of my top favourite score spot shared with STAR WARS. I love Far From Home/E.T. Alone (alternate)! The high tuba is an interesting touch but it's the early mothership departure that makes it - somehow it has an elegant but unfulfilled majesty, suggestions of a beautiful shape but the cue as is is just reaching for it and not succeeding in getting there, eventually just giving up (which of course fits perfectly with the scene it scores). I have to wonder if JW was thinking of bookending with a more complete reprise at some point. My second favourite of the alternates is End Credits, such a different feel to that opening with all those returning wind stabs and brass pedaling.

  6. Great, now I feel the urge to go searching for it and recording my own VST library... brb in a few hours... Since we're on the topic of Star Wars anyway, I also did notice it in Haab's Battlefront 2 score a few times, and possibly in JFO if I recall correctly.

  7. Spellbound by Miklós Rózsa (Allan Wilson Rerecording) Joined @Holko and @SteveMc for an impromptu listening session yesterday. Lovely score this, and a fantastic recording to match! A few notes: - the main title is an all-timer: gorgeous lush romanticism with a great theremin introduction worked in - Holko, being more acquainted with Rózsa than I am, was able to draw some parallels to, I believe it was, The Thief of Bagdad, among others - love how nearly the whole wind section gets a go at the theme throughout the score: oboe, flute, and clarinet solos - the 17 minute track that covers the love scene is quite an amazing piece- feels a lot shorter than it actually is and has a solid sense of structure considering it's a combination of cues! - the latter half of the score has a "train-like" rhythm in stretches, helped by instrumentation, most notable for a literal train sequence, as well as some travelling scenes before - the Ski Run revelation is such a masterclass in building tension! Thanks to the fellas for joining in!

  8. Yes, the dialogue and sound effect track was audible during the rehearsal. To get in, I made an educated guess as to what time the orchestra would be rehearsing, booked a cheap tour of the Royal Albert Hall to coincide and got lucky. Simples.

  11. Yavar didn't compare the sound quality of Intrada/LLL vs Tadlow. And I definitely agree that the Intrada was an improvement and the LLL has by far the best sound of all the releases of the original recording. I like the Tadlow a lot and usually play it these days, and obviously it has modern acoustics. But while the LLL sounds "old", it's pefectly listenable, and anyone who wants to have the original recording should have that version.

  12. I doubt that. HENRY V is very British in sound, SPR is very American. And history is full of hymns dedicated to fallen soldiers. But you're right that they're both in that category,

  13. @E-Wan,if this matters, the DVD and Blu Ray releases of 'Superman' have an ‘isolated music score’ audio track where the music is edited and sync’d with the film. Otherwise, what project are you working on that you have to do the sync’ing/edits yourself?

  14. I rank it as probably the best MCU movie. Strange’s story is interesting and told in a mature but still fun way. Strange also learns something about himself in the story and grows as a character which most Marvel characters don’t. It was also nicely paced. And I like the way they portrayed magic. It could’ve easily ended up feeling like Marvel’s version of Harry Potter, where all magic has a kind of superficial feel to it, but it didn’t. In Dr Strange, magic has depth to it in a way that I think hasn’t been put to film before. Also, Cumberbatch is cumberawesome! Probably the best actor since Jack Nicholson.

  25. Why does Enfys' Stand-Off have what sounds like distant vocals (but is presumably some synth thing?) from 0:15ish to 0:30ish? It sounds like you're in an apartment building and your neighbor 3 units down has their TV on too loud

  27. We got a Yoda quote this very episode. But I think it's great that Göransson's mostly allowed to do his own (lovely) thing without slavishly needing to needledrop JW at every opportunity, it works very well. Hmm, more importantly, who cares? She did a good job. She's orange anyway. Yeah, they've done it once already, and it's not the same here at all.

  31. Shirley by Tamar-Kali Half an hour of meandering plucking noises and vocal textures. Every now and then, there'll be a 30 second flash of an interesting colour that teases a far better score than this one, if there was just more musical direction. Albums like this prove that more and more films are just looking to assemble "new" sounds together, rather than any real interest in music itself. Ammonite by Dustin O'Halloran The anticipated gay romance of the year. There's a nice melancholic idea for piano and strings. Otherwise, not a lot to write home about. It is thankfully a pleasant short listen (just 20min!). if you're in the mood for simple Jóhannsson/Richter-esque fare. The opening cue is really all you need though. The Pathless by Austin Wintory There is some fantastic action writing here. Dynamic counterpoint is sorely missed! And plenty of delicious Goldsmith-esque dancing figures. But I am admittedly growing a bit weary of these long Wintory albums without stronger musical hooks to tie them together. I know that this is more symptomatic of the video game medium, but as accomplished as they are, they can be exhausting. Still, some fantastic stuff here. The Life Ahead by Gabriel Yared If you're longing for a proper long-lined melody, the kind that has been all but banished from modern Hollywood, Yared supplies one here with commendable reliability. It's elegant Schindler-esque central theme is supported by some pleasant underscore that makes a solid half hour album. The Social Network by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross Remind me again why people here hate this one so much? It's a lot of fun! And it's definitely aged a lot better for me.

  32. The Joker left no impression on me after seeing the film and I've never felt compelled to hear it again. It's a score that has no narrative structure, but instead fits the scenes and then expires its use beyond them. I don't enjoy using the term 'overrated', but this is one score I can safely say fits that category and has been heaped undeserved praise by organizations who don't give a fig about anything other than popular opinion.

  38. I'm the opposite to that, lol. I prefer stories when the hero or the team of heroes is already formed and engaged with each other. This is one of the reasons I prefer Age of Ultron to the first Avengers and Guardians 2 to the first.

  39. I enjoy that, too. But less the Guardians of the Galaxy aspect of it, and more the comedy of the original The Avengers. Its basically Ghostbusters with superheroes!

  40. Kudos again to Newton Howard for turning a perfectly worthwhile replacement in such a short period of time. The score is one of the best aspects of that movie; it's biggest issue being daft runtime. Those 3hrs effectively ruled out the movie's chances of being casual TV chill fair while channel hopping on a rainy afternoon. There's a really wonderful adventure movie buried under all that bloat. PJ must have forgotten how brisk those old 50s, 60s and 70s monster movies where at the time. Like the slovenly undisciplined fool he is.

  42. I was a lucky sod this afternoon. I had the tremendous good fortune to be able to catch a little of the rehearsal for the world premiere of Jurassic Park at the Royal Albert Hall. I saw the orchestra rehearsing the scene with the car in the tree and the subsequent T-Rex / jeep chase, as well as the Remembering Petticoat Lane scene with Dickie Attenborough and Laura Dern from later in the movie. The orchestra sounded fantastic, so I am sure this will be brilliant (I am going to tomorrow evening's performance). The red carpet was being laid out, so there will no doubt be some special guests of some description attending the premiere this evening. Although I was not allowed to take any photos while the orchestra was actually playing, during a break I was able to take this photo showing the set-up of the orchestra. As you can see there is a huge percussion section and a synthesiser which was practising some of the shakuhachi bits. You can see the synthesiser player just behind the pianist; he is obviously doubling on celeste.
