  1. DC's R rated movies are pretty juvenile though? I don't think an R rating makes a movie adult. Tits and fucks are not a sign of maturity to me. Joker is an adult film for sure. I think ZSJL is a PG13 movie forced into to an R Rating. Birds of Prey is borderline. There is some violence but is it an adult film? I think not. The Suicide Squad also doesn't seem like an adult film to me. The humor seems teenage level to me.

  2. I have Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., Jurassic Park, The Lost World, Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan, War of the Worlds, Star Wars (all nine episodes), and The Patriot in 4K, and watching them in 4K has been the equivalent of seeing them for the first time. I cannot wait to get the Indiana Jones 4K set.

  3. Trailers released which showcase the new 4K masters (bizarrely only uploaded in 1080p, but it gives you an indication of the new colour timing). Raiders has been fixed (no heavy orange tint as on the previous Bluray), Doom and Crusade look better than ever, and Crystal Skull has had a total overhaul. It actually looks like a proper Indiana Jones film now; that ugly, artificial, stylized green tint is completely gone and it now matches the brown/earthy tones of the first 3 films. Kudos to Kaminski for fixing this, assuming he was involved in the new grade. There's definitely a visual consistency across the 4 films now that wasn't there in the previous Blurays.

  5. Unfortunately, the GEMA repertoire listings for Tintin follow the same odd convention as other Paramount films: any cue that appears on the soundtrack album is not registered under its original title, but under the album title, with "Part 1", "Part 2", etc. if the OST track is compromised of more than one cue. Once again, the work codes seem to match the film ordering of cues (or their first appearance, at least): Work Code GEMA Title Cue AE9521 The Adventures of Tintin Tinker-Tin (Rev) AE9544 Sur Le Boulevard 1S4B/1S4C Sur Le Boulevard AE9618 The Secret of the Scrolls - Part 1 The Unicorn [orch. I'm also puzzled by the division of 'Red Rackham's Curse and the Treasure' into eight parts, since I'd broken it down previously as four: 0:00-2:18 1M21C At Sword Point 2:18-4:08 2M22 Dueling Pirates 4:08-4:54 4M22A Insert - Red Rockham’s Curse 4:54-end 4M22A Insert 2 - To Baghar! 7. Michael Giacchino - Jupiter Ascending (OST album) Took the shrinkwrap off the Varese version of the OST album today. I hadn't heard this score in a minute. I still like it, but I do feel a shorter OST length would have been a better way to initially release the score. It really meanders for a while in the middle here. The complete score actually works pretty well, but this oddball version, too long to be a standard OST album, too short to be the whole thing, is just kinda goofy. But I really like the themes and the performance and recording, regardless of all that!

  9. How so? It's based a) on experience of the quality of dubs (German dubs are better than most, but that's mostly an indication of how bad most others are) and b) on the fact that any translation is a distortion of the original, and when it's not just the text that is being replaced but the actual performance, the effect is far greater still. The original actors spent weeks, often months, inhabiting their roles, learning the script, discussing their interpretation with the director and their cast members. The dubbers get a translated script that's often already a gross distortion of the original, no insight into the mindset of the original performers, and far less time to come up with an interpretation, even if they wanted to. English language audio is also usually much more "natural" than the German dub even attempts to be. Add to that that most dubbing voice actors just give lousy stereotypical performances that sound the same for any film and any actor they dub, with clearly no regard to the original performance whatsoever (there's such a thing as dub typecasting, where e.g. a dubbing voice gets assigned to a "comedy actor" early in their career and still dubs them the exact same "comedy style" way in serious roles 20 years later). A few of them are good actors: Peter Matić, who was Ben Kingsley's dubbing voice (among others) was an excellent actor with a fantastic voice. His dubs were usually "good", probably about as good as they could reasonably be - but they still were, by necessity, a lesser distortion of the original performance. In Austria, they play custom radio stations in supermarkets, made up of some "shopping friendly" songs and commercials, including film commercials, i.e. "audio trailers" consisting of sound clips of dubbed films. From them, I found that I can reliably recognise a German film dub within seconds simply based on the speakers' performances. Ever since DVDs became widely available, and original audio versions of films with them, I've been avoiding dubs like the plague. And whenever I come across one (more often recently because several German Blu-ray releases insist on playing un-skippable German dubbed trailers when loading), I find, again and again, that dubs aren't just as bad as I always say they are, but worse. I'd wager that in at least 90% of all cases, a poor performance by an original actor is preferable to the dub, based on just the vocal performance. And for at least 90% of the rest, the weak original performance will still be more "correct (i.e. true to the rest of the film) than the dub.

  10. I was very disappointed by the finale, when I saw the original version for the first time. The German dubbed version features a much better voice actor for Pitt than he himself could ever be. It's The White Shark in German and The Teeth of the Sea in French. Same here.

  12. Well I've never enjoyed that score I find the main title quiet boring to be fair, it sounds more like accompagnating music than a true main title. I find the only two really nice things of this album was the first song Everybody Knows and of course the Beatles remix which sounds terrific. Plus it is because of this score that I've stand away for a long time from some older Elfman's masterpieces such as Returns or Scissorshands because JL was one of the few scores I've really listen from that composer at the time with the Alice in Wonderland movies and Avengers: AoU. What a great masterpiece! I'm so disappointed that Goldsmith didn't write more trilogy because he really made a terrific jobs with this one. I was wondering if the Varese DE of the trilogy where all complete or if they were some music missing that might lead to a reissue?

  15. That one is a bit tricky to pinpoint, since a lot of the time, it more has to do with the geoblocking that can happen with official videos, based on what is available in each country. If anything, unofficial uploads actually can have more of a chance at future proofing (if they aren't taken down or also geoblocked, that is).

  20. German dubs from the 50's to 70's often feature *better* voice/ensemble performances than many originals, if just because highly trained actors i. e. from Berlin's Schiller-Theater, often elevated mediocre star performances. You generally betray a poor/biased knowledge on this particular topic. I'd rather say there were some obvious misses for very specific reasons (dialects and such), it's only from the 90's onwards that there really was a noticeable drop to the artifice you cite.

  23. I'm not the biggest Marvel fan by any means but I'll defend Far From Home. They finally captured that John Hughes vibe they were going for. It also serves as a wonderful epilogue to the Infinity Saga, tying up a number of emotional loose ends while constructing a villain out of deep-cut in-universe nods. That all of those loose ends, emotional and villainous, are born out of Tony Stark was simple, refreshing. I normal whine that I wish Marvel would try too hard and fail at this point, anything interesting, but this was one case where the straight answer was the best answer. I actually found it to be one of the only Marvel movies that didn't talk down to me and no one was more surprised than me about that. It was dorky, but that was all about tone. Considering how tepid and unnecessary I found Homecoming, I did not expect to like Far From Home one bit. But did. I'll happily shit on Marvel anytime but when they get it right, I'm fair, I'll say so.

  29. Apparently, Korngold's father's (in continuation of the Hanslick tradition) strong lobbying against modernists like Krenek had a backslash on the reception of his son's works, which at the time were already viewed as anachronistic. As far as I recall, the story is somewhat abstractly fairy tale like, which didn't bode well for Strauss' Die Frau ohne Schatten 8 years earlier either (which has become much more successful since then, but still isn't regularly staged I believe). I have to retract my earlier comment: The 2017 production at the Volksoper Wien was an unstaged concert performance. Obviously it was impressive enough for me to feel like I've actually "seen" it. I'd also wish the Staatsoper would revive their brilliant stage production of Die Tote Stadt, or at least release it on video. Speaking of which, there is a filmed stage production of Heliane on Naxos (by the Deutsche Opera Berlin). I should probably check that out.

  31. Justice League (Danny Elfman) - I can’t decide how much I enjoy this score. It’s got some decent action writing (notably Tunnel Chase) and has a lot more texture and interest than most marvel/DC movie scores. Funny that this comes right after a post about Batman Returns which is a far more interesting score both dramatically, thematically and totally.

  43. Well when it comes to Williams, he has a huge amount of scores left to expand or premiere You can poke through Williams' scored listed either by film studio or by music label, but you can't really narrow it down because Intrada has worked with all those film studios and all those music labels. It could be literally any of them that isn't Presumed Innocent (Varese) or Star Wars / Indy (Disney Records) Or it could even be a television work that isn't on those lists....
