  2. Several months back I started working on an isolated score presentation for Always, using material contained on the OST. With the announcement of a remastered expansion coming from LLL, it became a 'now or never' moment to finish what I started. I've since gone back and expanded the project to include the film's unreleased music, in the hope these videos whet people's appetite for the upcoming expansion. Despite all the knocks this score has received over the years, when finally watching the film I was surprised to discover a very nuanced work from Williams. While Spielberg's collaborations with Williams through the early 80s would be associated with large-scale, virtuosic orchestral brilliance, the director's shift towards restrained dramas was well underway by the mid-80s. A trilogy-capping Indiana Jones film notwithstanding, Always rounded out the tail end of a boisterous decade of film scoring for Williams. While moments of lush scoring would prove scarce, the score's greatest strength is the impressive restraint of its central love theme, equal parts tender and wistful. Although commonplace in collaborations to follow, the surprisingly late first instance of a score cue (22 minutes into the film) was unusual for its time in a Spielberg feature. We begin with a short, atmospheric cue that underscores a (seemingly prophetic) moment of unease for Dorinda, as she sights the fateful plane of her partner's (Pete) future demise. Cue Status: OST T15 Intimate Conversations (0:00-0:31) A similar moment of retrospection follows soon after, as Dorinda notices something amiss with the glowing blue halo that engulfs Pete as he opens the fridge door. Interestingly, Spielberg opted to track the immediately preceding cue into this moment. Williams' intended score is therefore both unused and unreleased, but the tracking works effectively. Cue Status: Tracked from OST T15 Intimate Conversations (0:00-0:31), JW's Intended Version Unreleased & Unused Increasingly worried over Pete's cavalier attitude towards the dangers of his work (flying planes over raging bush fires, dousing them with fire retardant), Dorinda begs Pete to consider a new role in Colorado. This cue is unreleased. Cue Status: Unreleased Two pilots down with a new burn in the South Rim, and despite being his layoff day, Pete is called for help. With the previous night's discussion weighing on her mind, Dorinda rushes to the airfield before Pete's departure. In one of the score's highlights, Dorinda expresses her love for Pete, insisting he can't leave the ground without knowing. As Dorinda returns to her bike, Pete returns the gesture... but his declaration of love goes unheard, drowned out by the propellers. Cue Status: OST T10 Saying Goodbye (2:46 onward dialed out in the film, omitting Williams' dramatic conclusion).

  3. The film had actually two different, but very similar keyarts of the poster (illustrated by the great John Alvin). The US poster doesn't have the truck: The international poster used in UK, France, Italy, and Spain has a different composite and the truck added:

  5. The fire operation goes awry. A dangerous dive into the flames results in Pete's left engine catching fire. Fellow pilot Al witnesses the resulting explosion -- Pete's number is up. A heartbroken Dorinda ruminates. (Note: The film version of this cue is unreleased, which features celesta, bells & ethereal synth overlays in addition to the strings-based OST version). Soon after, Pete finds himself wandering through an ashen forest, uncertain of his situation. Atop an impossibly lush hill in barren surrounds, Pete meets Hap. There, he ponders if he isn't dead, he must be crazy. Hap assures him he isn't crazy. Pete is thus given an opportunity: return to the real world and inspire another, before moving into the afterlife. "They hear you inside their minds, as if it were their own thoughts," Hap explains, before a warning. "Remember, you've had your life... and anything you do for yourself now is a waste of spirit." Cue Status: Film version of The Explosion is Unreleased. This video features the alternate OST version (T12 The Return, 0:00-1:19) followed by T9 Pete in Heaven. Pete returns to Flat Rock airfield and finds the target of his inspiration, a young pilot named Ted. He also 'reunites' with old friend Al (now the base commander) who also meets Ted for the first time. Cue Status: Unreleased As Pete embarks on his first 'lesson' with Ted, Dorinda arrives at Flat Rock. Although unaware their paths have intertwined (albeit spiritually), the pair sense an immediate connection. Williams underscores this moment with a melancholic, strained variation on Pete & Dorinda's love theme. Cue Status: OST T12 The Return (1:17-end) Taking refuge from the storm in an abandoned base, Pete discovers an Old Timer who can seemingly hear what he says. He attempts communicating to Ted via the Old Timer, but choice words are lost in translation and Pete's intent doesn't go to plan. (Note: the film only partially uses the OST version of this cue before trailing off in a more lighthearted, playful direction; the film version is unreleased. Also of note is a substantial section of music on album which has no corresponding footage, indicating this sequence was heavily trimmed down after Williams scored it). Excited by Ted's return to Flat Rock, a young mechanic gussies up in preparation for his arrival. Mechanical trouble and wacky hijinks ensues. Cue Status: Film version partially uses an unreleased alternate. This video uses the OST version from T17 The Old Timer's Shack, followed by T8 Follow Me.

  7. Neumation music has just announced that their next full score will be Horner’s Krull. Pretty exciting. Definitely going to pick that one up. It was supposed to be Poltergeist, so hopefully it’s just delayed, and not canceled.

  8. The first flood title was X-Men, the second is Always. Here's hoping they continue to release 1 per month the entire rest of the year! X-Men and Always are two of the 9 that were at UME, leaving 7 more there, plus still 2 at Sony and 1 at Warners Can't wait!

  9. Another title ticked off in Always! If Varese can expand Presumed Innocent, and LLL revisit Hook and tackle JFK, we'd have the biggest stretch of chronological Matessino expansions in JW's filmography!

  10. Pete and Dorinda are finally reunited... in spirit. Despite Hap's warning, Pete uses this opportunity to say all the things he wishes he'd said while alive. Dorinda, perhaps aware of his spiritual presence, pauses to reminisce... until Ted interrupts. Cue Status: OST T14 Seeing Dorinda While sharing a ride, Dorinda and Ted stumble upon a bus driver suffering a heart attack. Ted responds with CPR and saves his life. Although they started on shaky ground, Dorinda begins to feel something for Ted. Cue Status: Unreleased While enjoying their first dinner together, Ted and Dorinda split a wishbone. Rather than wishes, discussion turns to Pete. But before long, the pair acknowledge their deepening feelings for each other, much to Pete's dismay. Cue Status: Unreleased Her newfound feelings for Ted progressing too fast, Dorinda ends the night prematurely. With the one year anniversary of Pete's death lingering on her mind, she tries on the dress Pete gifted her one year prior. She dances alone to Smoke Gets In Your Eyes before retiring to bed. Pete resumes his spiritual courtship while Dorinda sleeps, unable to let go. (Note: Williams wrote two equally touching versions of this cue, and combined both versions in OST track 11 Pete And Dorinda). Waking in Heaven, Pete is reunited with Hap. Disappointed by Pete's self-serving use of spiritual energy, Hap offers him another chance to say goodbye to Dorinda. "I sent you back to settle with the one you love. I sent you back to say goodbye. Until you do that, she won't be free... and neither will you." Heartbroken, Pete responds, "I'm not ready to say goodbye." Hap wisely explains, "You still have to learn... to gain your freedom, you have to give it." Cue Status: This video features the film version of Pete and Dorinda from OST T11 0:00-1:36, followed by T10 Promise to Hap.

  11. I don’t think Intrada’s notes comprehensively listed every appearance. I mean, there it is at 1:19 of The Poppy Fields (Main Title)! On the original half hour album for this great score, it only appeared a single time (briefly in the final cue)! I agree it’s a stunner; the huge Intrada expansion was truly a godsend and made this score shoot up to the top of Jerry’s 90s output for me. Yavar

  12. If you like 90's Goldsmith, you must really check out The Ghost and The Darkness. The expanded edition, if possible, although the OST is a very good listening experience

  13. I've also listened to The Shadow a lot lately and only now come to really appreciate it. One big problem and the reason why it's not very well-known even among many Goldsmith fans is its limited availability. A straight reissue (without any changes, because the Intrada program is perfect) paired with a premiere on sreaming services would be very welcome.

  15. @crumbs You can cross another one off: So, setting aside the special case of The Sugarland Express, which was vetoed (for now, anyway), that just leaves Amistad, Catch Me If You Can, and The Terminal for unexpanded pre-2005 Spielberg/Williams scores.

  16. Wowzers, the ending of that cue really wouldn't have worked if left in the film. Spielberg was right to dial it out and have Pete's declaration drowned out only by the sound of the plane, and not music too In fact I wonder if Williams knew where Spielberg wanted the music to end, but wrote a longer ending anyway to give his eventual score album a better ending in the track that would contain that cue.

  18. Okay, giving it some thought after going through the LLL set and KB promo a few times, I think I've nailed down every track that has Badelt's involvement from what's currently available: X-Men Main Title (Film Construct) Ambush (Film Edit) Helicopter Hijack (All Versions) Kelly In Prison / Beach Train (Both Versions) Xavier Falls (Film Version) [Though there's a possibility he's on the original as well.] Museum Fight (Film Version) Museum Fight (Continued) Museum Fight (Part 1 Alternate) Fight On The Head [The Statue Of Liberty] (All Versions) Why Ask Questions / Finale / End Credits (Film Construct) Ones that I'm unsure about: -Bar Fight [There's a repeating chime here that sounds similar to what's on the promo version of Inside The Statue, but I imagine that's more a tracked element than something Badelt did.] -Ambush [The album version lacks a lot of pieces that are on the promo version, so it's debatable if he has any presence on the original finished cue.] -Cerebro [This one supposedly was listed on a website, presumably the old HZ.com music player. If I had to guess, Hybrid likely picked this track as a result of it being the closest match to the main titles.] -Land Of Tolerance (Film Version) [The drum sounds at the start fit in well enough with the regular elements of his work here, but it's not prominent enough on the promo to be sure.] -Inside The Statue [I have my theory that this track was never properly finished in the first place, so the one on the promo likely was an early effort by KB to assemble a full cue out of what was available. The final edit is mostly tracked, so again his involvement is debatable.] A particular oddity: -X-Men Titles (X-Men Logo V.3) | X-Men Logo V.1 [This original composition that was rejected features an instance at the 0:40 mark that sounds a lot like the main Kamen X theme. I hesitate to say for sure it is, since it's kind of common sort of melody in superhero scores (Elfman Spidey and even Badelt's own TMNT). So with that, I remain undecided on if it should count as part of the regular score.] Other notes: -There are many instances in the MK portion of the KB promo where material you'd normally hear performed by an orchestra are instead played through a MIDI keyboard, implying Badelt was working with an incomplete copy of the score. This gives credence to the notion that Klaus was brought on by Kamen itself, or was at least kept to the side by Fox early on.

I've listened to all three OST albums and love them but didn't remember any track titles from the sequel scores. Kinda hoping for expansions this year before digging back into them The first score I know very well and would recognize any OST or Expansion names

Wow that’s really cool! I had never even heard of Neumation Music until you pointed this out. Great to see that there’s now a few publishers for full scores

  24. I'm relatively familiar with a lot of his work, just not super familiar. I have always listened to The Motion Picture, however. Right now I am looking for his best 90's action cues and guilty pleasures. I love 90s Goldsmith.

  26. I thought Skyfall is a masterpiece and a great film, personally. It definitely copies heavily from The Dark Knight in its second half (not to mention a Home Alone inspired finale) but it all works for me. Mendes really nailed Craig's Bond here and amplified what worked in the previous films while adding a dash of classic flavor to the character. The score by Newman was also really good, and even though I missed Arnold, I liked the change of pace and felt it helped add some freshness to the film. Add in Roger Deakins and some gorgeous visuals and top rate action scenes, the film really works for me. SPECTRE on the other hand comes off as a pale imitation of the previous film, despite being made by nearly the entirely same crew (no Deakins was obviously a huge loss). The opening scene is thrilling and a great opening to set up the mystery of the film. Unfortunately, it all goes downhill as even the titles show the film is going to be a lackluster effort trying to replicate Skyfall's success. The whole film just has no energy at all, with quite possibly the most boring car chase ever through the streets of Rome and a plane chasing after cars that seems completely blah. Craig unfortunately is a big problem in the film, as he's trying to play it cool and confident (think Steve McQueen) but he just comes off as bored the entire film, and it doesn't help that Mendes doesn't seem too interested either. The whole film just kind of happens, until the third act where it completely falls off the rails. The whole subplot with C really goes nowhere and not nearly well done enough to dedicate so much screen time to for a film that is already far too long. The third act is just laughably bad and from the Sony leaks we know they basically began filming without an ending (did they learn nothing from Quantum of Solace)? At its core, SPECTRE is sort of a return to the old Bond formula in many ways, and it really could have worked with more lively direction and emphasis on tension and suspense. Instead, everyone seems bored and inconvenienced by everything (including Newman who reused a lot of cues from Skyfall for the action sequences) no better highlighted by Bond's PPK now capable of downing a helicopter simply for no other reason that it was time for the movie to end. Hopefully No Time to Die can deliver a better end to this incarnation of the character, as its clear that Craig took the criticism to heart with the last film and came back if only to leave on a high note.

  27. Nah, The Shadow is sold out / out of print I'm assuming the dude who runs that list doesn't make it a weekly habit to check every blue title to see if they've now sold out, but if someone posts a message to the thread about certain titles I'm guessing he'd update it

  30. I love love love Casino Royale so much, every time I re-watch it (which is shortly before a new Craig Bond film comes out when I re-watch all prior Craig entries), I am amazed all over again again how freaking great it is, and how no matter how many years go by it hasn't aged at all. All his follow-up films are disappointing in different ways. Quantum's script was clearly not ready when the writer's strike started, yet they filmed it anyway - they should have waited. And the imitation Bourne style action scene editing was poorly done (and was a bad idea to begin with). Skyfall has some great scenes (love that sequence in the building where you see the fight in silhouette, and the whole cold open) and a cool overall idea for the story, but the plot holes are annoying and the long finale at Bond's old home doesn't work as well as it should have (or as well as they think it did, I think). SPECTRE is the one I've only seen one time, but I just remember feeling kinda Blaise about it, like no one's heart was really in it, or something. I'm actually looking forward to revisiting it just to see what I think about it after two viewings (separated by SIX YEARS!? dear god). One positive of SPECTRE is for sure the casting of Monica Belluci, who frankly could have been cast in any Bond film from the Brosnan era to present, and even more frankly should have been playing a cool recurring character throughout Craig's run. I remember thinking the big "reveal" that Christoph Waltz was really behind everything that happened in the entire Craig run was soooooo silly and forced in, we'll see if I still think that the second time. I think I remember really liking the opening Mexico City bit, and Lea Seydoux is always great

  32. To a certain extent Skyfall is definitely style over substance, and I agree Casino Royale has more meat to it. And for my taste Skyfall delved a little more into Bond's past, and psyche, than I really think we need (something common for the Craig Bond). And of course it has big enough plot holes to drive a London Tube Train through. That said, I still think Skyfall is pretty widely regarded as a "great" Bond film, and I agree with that sentiment. It hit all quadrants...critical and audience acclaim, huge box office and regularly ranks high among Bond fans (in most of the rankings I've seen at least). And if I recall, Steef loved it. Didn't he say he saw it like a dozen times or something like that? What more do you need!

  33. The OST track of Camel Race sounds exactly as clear and crisp as the C&C track and still you hear nothing that shouldn't be there. I replaced a lot of the C&C tracks with OST tracks. Luckily, the tracks with really bad issues all have their OST counterparts. The mix from 1999 is just much more professionally balanced. The 2018 mix ranges from spot-on to weird distortion or brickwalling. The main issue on several occasions, however, is all the instruments fighting for the center of attention.

  34. The videos are both from Sunday. The first sounds more spacious like it has more room mics added maybe? I also like that sound, more room would even make everything sound more massive than it already is But all the Saturday performances haven't been officially released anywhere. There were some audience recordings of the Imperial March from Saturday on Youtube (some partial and even a complete one) but they seem to have all been deleted from Youtube by now. The march was faster than the Sunday perf., timing was maybe not as precise overall, but apart from a cymbal that was slightly too early it was quite perfect.

  35. The Conversation - 'enjoyed' is maybe not the right word for a movie so bleakly paranoid (there's stuff in it that wouldn't shame a horror film), but there's no denying Gene Hackman's excellence as for-hire surveillance expert Harry Caul (a man who lives as impersonal a life as possible) who fears that the audio tapes he has submitted to his client are going to result in murder and attempts to prevent it. Also features a pre-Han Solo Harrison Ford.

I was very tempted to take 2 seats from sections D or E but they were both obscured and I didn't want to end up not being able to see, so I went for the middle.

  46. That's not true. In 1986, Ted Turner bought MGM. He later sold it off, but kept their entire pre-1986 library for himself under "Turner Entertainment". He later sold Turner Entertainment to Time Warner in 1996. So all pre-1986 MGM films have been controller by Warners since 1996 It's only 1986-present MGM films that Amazon just bought (along with the brand)
