  3. Hi All, I just joined up now to let you know, just in case you hadn't noticed yet, that someone uploaded an episode of Convoy onto YouTube 2 days ago, and it's actually one of the ones scored by Williams. It's called "Lady on the Rock" and it's here: Cheers, Charlie

  5. https://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/art/john-williams-boston-pops-orchestra-complete-philips-recordings/hnum/10693190 John Williams & Boston Pops Orchestra - Complete Philips Recordings Boston Pops Orchestra , John Williams 20 CDs Pops on the March Pops in Space We wish you a merry Christmas Pops around the World Aisle Seat - Great Film Music Out of this World Prokofieff: Peter and the Wolf; Tchaikovsky: The Nutcracker (excerpts) With a Song in my Heart Swing, swing, swing America, the Dream goes on On Stage Bernstein by Boston Pops in Love Holst: The Planets Digital Jukebox Lucky to be me Salute to Hollywood Pops a la Russe Pops by Gershwin By Request / Pops Britannia Artist: Boston Pops Orchestra, John Williams Label: Decca , ADD Order number: 10693190 Release date: 14.1.2022 John Williams is revered as the composer par excellence for some of Hollywood's most popular film scores. This has pushed another facet of his career somewhat into the background that is no less important: John Williams as concert conductor. Williams' career on the podium began when he succeeded Arthur Fiedler, who in his fifty-year tenure had made the Boston Pops Orchestra a national institution and a globally recognized ensemble. Given the daunting task, Williams' conducting turned out to be a brilliant choice. Williams legitimized the film music repertoire by treating it with more philological respect and seriousness than he had previously received - which in turn meant that it was also valued by other orchestras. He commissioned new, musically more demanding symphonic arrangements of popular classics and the Great American Songbook, replacing the lackluster and "kitschy" arrangements in the pop repertoire. He also expanded the orchestra's core classical repertoire by performing European composers who had not previously been performed and commissioning new works. Williams' legacy with the Boston Pops is superbly portrayed in this box that gathers the albums recorded for Philips from his first decade at the helm of the orchestra. The set is rounded off by an intimate project with the unforgettable Jessye Norman: Williams returns to his pianistic roots and accompanies Norman on songs by Leonard Bernstein, Michel Legrand, Richard Rodgers, Kurt Weill, George Gershwin, Frederick Loewe and Billy Joel. Jessye can also be heard on a second disc of this collection with the Pops and sings the Great American Songbook. Philip Classics 'recordings are one of the most important testimonies to the importance of Williams' work with the Boston Pops and the most comprehensive example of the musical skills, interpretive acumen and stylistic breadth of the conductor John Williams.

  9. - It isn't complete. There is music you can hear in the film that isn't on it, as well as unused music that turned up in leaks that isn't on it...and even music on the original OST release that isn't on it! - It isn't chronological. This is subjective of course, and many may like the programming choices just fine, but many find it odd that some cues only appear as bonus tracks, or that album tracks that combined cues from two different parts of the movie were retained in the main program - The sound quality isn't consistent. The release fluctuates between 3 different sources: 2011 transfers of some sort of unearthed tapes, the album master, and the final film's music stem. That source sounds noticeably worse than the other two, even to people who don't normally notice these types of things, and contains volume fluctuations and edited passages as needed for the film itself - They didn't recreate the intended performance edits out of what they pulled from the 2011 transfers. So if JW recorded a cue 5 times and his approved version used in the film used 40 seconds of take 5, 10 seconds from take 3, 20 seconds from take 2, and then the rest from take 5, the same cue on the LLL set might just be take 5 throughout. That's a rough outline of it that hopefully gets the point across about why so many people desire a new edition done over from scratch by Mike.

  10. Bit of a red flag that Mike used transfers from 2011 to assemble this Mondo remaster. I would've thought, if any new expansion of Hook was in the works, that new high-resolution transfers would be commissioned (considering multiple reels were missing/lost in 2011, and it's unclear if the rest were even first-generation masters). So... this news is pretty deflating to me. The comment about Star Wars doesn't inspire confidence either. It feels like we've heard that sentiment ever since the license reverted to Disney, but it's been radio silence ever since. Every time I (naively) get my hopes up that an anniversary or a new film or the completion of a trilogy might trigger it... nothing happens. We're stuck between rolling lockdowns in Australia and soundtrack expansions are one of the few things to look forward to. I'm eternally grateful to Mike and all the labels for their work behind the scenes, but it's so frustrating how these highly-coveted scores seem to be endlessly stuck in no-man's-land.

  15. Also, 10000 copies for a redo! We may joke about LLL releasing 49 volumes of 4 disc Voyager sets but it's actually insanely heartwarming to see a franchise owner entity be so supportive of specialty soundtrack releases, Star Trek has been handled really really well.

  16. The indexes between tracks just seem to be set in very volatile fashion. The usual Intrada or LLL release has the music of each track start at around 500-800 milliseconds. On this particular Quartet release most tracks seem okay, but for example "Beth and Nick" and "Roxy Loses" almost bleed into the previous track (or at least the amplitude starts rising at the end of the previous track. Not ideal, but the only track, where you can clearly hear this issue is "Home Visit", which has its first audible second bleeding into the previous track "Night Life". This easily fixable kind of shit has become a regular thing on releases by Varese Sarabande. I'm just wondering... is it that hard to quickly check, whether the indexes are set in the right place?

  20. This article explains exactly what every bonus track is and how they are different from what's on disc 1 and/or what we ever had before. I never knew that Kirk Takes Command on the FSM release was a completely different take than what was used in the film before! It also includes a nice quote from Neil Bulk, and the author also gives his opinion on the new sound quality: "When listening, we immediately notice a wider stereo sound than the previous editions. The sound also seems clearer, more balanced and more dynamic. This spatialization of sound and improved frequency equalization makes the difference and makes the experience more immersive. It's a real treat for the ears."

  21. This new main program is a dream come true! If I could have changed anything about the previous expansion, the two things I would have changed would have been to use the Epilogue without narration, and to move Genesis Program to be a bonus track instead of in the main program - and they did both of those things! If I could have changed a third thing, it might have been to separate Eels from Space Shuttle instead of combining them as one track, and now we have that option thanks to the new bonus section as well! Perfect perfect perfect! And the bonus track section is so much longer than anyone could have guessed! I can't wait to find all these new things they discovered! And I can't wait to hear how good the 1982 analog tape transfers as remastered by Matessino sound, compared to the 1982-era digital masters we've been stuck with for 39 years. 4 more hours until samples go online!

  27. Really cool to listen through this release. For all of us fans who know a large body of Williams' work, what a special treat it is to have something like this, where firstly, the entirety of the film recordings hadn't been previously released, and on top of that, a large chunk that wasn't in the film at all. Plus extra album tracks that weren't on the album? What a cool release! While the album sounds great, I agree that I like the film-presentation overall sound better. Not complaining here, but I do hope there's a chance years down the line for some of the unreleased source music (not just from Eiger, but other releases too) to be released, as I find it all to be great fun! The Eiger Sanction has a lot of variety to it, I'll have to listen through it a 2nd time before I can say what tracks are favorites of mine. I've been humming the main theme a lot though.

  30. In the main program, the cues "The Eels of Ceta Alpha V" and "Kirk In Space Shuttle" are combined into one long track with an overlap. In the bonus track section, each cue is presented with a clean ending / opening in their own tracks, if one prefers to hear either cue without the other one being attached to it.

  33. It’s a new piece. Confirmed by Boston Symphony Orchestra on Twitter and shared by Legacy of John Williams on Facebook. But is it his new Hollywood Bowl piece or something related? It would be pretty strange to premiere it in Boston. I’m assuming it’s totally unrelated and he’s been a busy boy.

  34. I’m seriously considering going to this, as are Maurizio and Mike M so we could consider a mini gathering if there’s interest. When Maurizio and I hosted the JW & LSO video tribute in May, Sir Clive Gillinson talked about this concert but we had to edit it out. Mainly because he was asked by the LSO if he’d pay for their flights and hotel to join him for the concert! Obviously with tongues in cheeks.

  35. About that specifically: Sony Pictures and Sony Music both have the right equipment to take old analog tape and spit out pristine 24/192 digital transfers of what's on it. Running the tape through such a machine in 2021 would have resulted in basically the same files as running it through the same machine in 2011. This isn't like Raiders and TOD, where they literally used the equipment wrong and ended up with music playing at the wrong speed, so a fresh transfer is required for those. The 2011 Hook transfer would still be considered pretty fresh!

  42. I still believe. In fact, I know it's coming, even if it isn't this year. Williams knows how much we love it, Matessino knows how much we want it. We got a longer Stanley n Iris, folks. We're going to get a better Hook. So I'm just going to stay over here, speaking my desire into a conscious universe, magicking a new Hook release into being with nothing but my willpower and intention because if anybody ever wanted anything enough to will it into existence, honey, it's me and this score And that's on periodt *snap*
