Thanks @Jay for listening in and providing commentary! I was stricken with a bug since late Wednesday evening so I apologise for sounding groggy during most of the show. I’d prerecorded Neil and Deniz on Monday so I was more myself then, thankfully. Deniz messaged me to say that Sara Horner (James Horner’s widow) listened to the full show live last night and enjoyed it, highlighting The Wonder Years segment with Star Trek 2, so that was lovely to hear. Here’s a link to the full show and a longer edit of the Star Trek 2 segment will be in next month’s FSM Online. Movie Magic TX 290821 It means that the AFM aren’t charging more reuse fees for larger units. 5,000 used to be the max affordable limit.7 points

I asked both ScreenArchives and Intrada, because I'm not sure who will send me the replacement disk. Already intrada, confirmed me they will send me a replacement CD for Cocoon. I'm so busy right now managing all those defective CD! I think it could be worthwile to create a thread just to list the recent defective CDs from each labels. I'm sure it would be helpfull for some users who don't have the time to read all the different threads for each release.3 points -

Soundstream is a defunct digital recording format. You'll see the Soundstream logo on most of the old Philips JW / Boston Pops albums, and Neil Bulk uses it as his avatar on the FSM forum. Here's some more info https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soundstream2 points

Very nice to see this come out although almost all of the albums have been pretty findable over the years. I was so excited for each new release when they came out at the time. Even with having them all, I'll double dip. The timing (January) feels like the beginning of a series of releases for JW's 90th Birthday (Feb 8, 2022). It will be interesting to see what the various labels beyond this.2 points

Neil just indicated he's already seen the new HD versions of 3 and 4 and they are a big improvement over the old versions Tim just said it is limited to 10,000 copies due to "new Union rules". What new union rules? Does this impact post-2005 scores by any chance?2 points

I can't say what is "definitive," but these are my favorite versions of the various OT concert pieces: Main Title (London Symphony, The Hollywood Sound) Princess Leia's Theme (Boston Pops) Here they Come (Skywalker Symphony) Throne Room and Finale (Skywalker Symphony) The Imperial March (Vienna Phil) Yoda's Theme (Boston Pops) The Asteroid Field (Boston Pops) Luke and Leia (Boston Pops) Parade of the Ewoks (Skywalker Symphony) Jabba the Hutt (Skywalker Symphony) The Forest Battle (Skywalker Symphony) As you can see, it's the Williams-conducted recordings which I prefer. I know many here are fond of the Varujan Kojian recording with the Utah Symphony, but it's never been a favorite of mine.2 points

To make those new 2018 editions, they went back to every take of every cue (or at least, selected takes of every cue) and rebuilt every single track over again from scratch from those. The team making these new edits did not meticulously match the same portions of the same takes used back in 1999/2002/2005 (a process that people like Mike Matessino and Neil Bulk always follow), but instead... well, I have no idea how they decided which portions of which takes to use, but the result is that each of these 3 album rebuilds are full of wrong takes throughout. {the original trilogy albums do not suffer this same fate - they have many other problems but no wrong takes} With Duel of the Fates in particular, the final version made in 1999 notably replaced a few portions of what was performed with little bits tracked in from other parts of the same recording, while on the 2018 edition they did not re-create those so you can now hear what was originally performed that they later chose to track over. Anyways, my original point was that a timpani moving from one channel to the other could have been a mistake the 2018 team made that wasn't done for the original 1999 edit, potentially. I have no idea, I haven't checked either track out to see, personally.2 points

John Williams in 2010 documentary MUSIC
Henry Sítrónu reacted to E-Wan for a topic
I came across a documentary simply called MUSIC. Director Andrew Zuckerman has interviewed eminent musicians, composers, and producers from various musical genre. One of many interviewees in this documentary is our John Williams. Fittingly he has also the last words in the end of it. Besides John Williams you can see and hear Danny Elfman, Philip Glass, Burt Bacharach, Herbie Hancock, ... and several musicians from rock, pop, hip-hop, classical, country, jazz,...etc. https://andrewzuckerman.com/music/1 point -
The new Han Solo and the Princess arrangement to me sounds like JW is eulogizing Carrie Fisher more-so than anything else. It certainly has no relation to the tone and feel of the TESB score or film1 point
-
He never liked it, that's why he wrote another arrangement for it in 2018! I kind of liked the simple and repetitive form of the original version, the newer is more elaborated, but doesn't the have the same emotional impact than the original, according to me. The new arrangement of "Han Solo and the Princess" has been recorded in 2019 by the The Slovak National Symphony Orchestra.1 point

I'll definitely check it out, but if I'm honest, the girl's voiceover in the beginning of the trailer worries me. Also, the aesthetic of the show (from the snippets that I can pick up) doesn't seem to appeal all that much to me. Feels a bit sci-fi channel.1 point

What are the "definitive" recordings of JW's Star Wars concert pieces?
Smeltington reacted to QuartalHarmony for a topic
Primarily the principal flute player in the middle section, I would say, who clearly cannot be expected to flutter-tongue that fast and simply cannot keep up. Kojian should have known better. Luke & Leia is also catatonically slow on that recording, for no readily explainable reason. The Soundstream recording, however, is wonderful - clear, realistic and with cracking bass. In general, I would agree that mostly it’s a toss-up between the 1990 Skywalker recording and the various 1980s Boston discs. I can’t share the love for the VPO Imperial March, I’m afraid - too slow, and the rall at the end is just… wrong. A shame, because other aspects of it are excellent. Mark1 point -
Intrada's pressing plant woes continue "Unfortunately we have discovered a sequencing issue with our recent batch of Cocoon. All of the music is there but in the wrong sequence. You may still place an order for Cocoon, but we will not be shipping any more copies until we correct the problem. Future orders for Cocoon will ship either with the correct CD already inserted, or with a separate replacement disc." http://store.intrada.com/s.nl/it.A/id.8288/.f1 point

MV Gerhard is the head of a film music label that releases scores from many composers across many eras of film-making. When he said, in February 2021, "We hope to have some new releases first week or two of March. After that, fingers crossed, a great flood shall wash upon the soundtrack marketplace unlike ever before...at least for a period of time" he was of course thinking about all the titles they had worked on that had gotten delayed that he knew would be big sellers. He knew they would be big sellers because fans of all different composers and eras of film making buy titles from his label! So subsequently, when every single month has brought another title that is selling multiple THOUSANDS of copies - X-Men in May! Always In June! Somewhere In Time in July! The Wrath of Khan in August! - his statement has been extremely accurate, and there are of course more titles of this nature yet to come, too! Everyone has different favorite composers, different eras of film scoring they are more drawn to, different genres and styles they prefer, etc etc. Just because titles that are not deep in your wheelhouse have been announced yet does not mean that MV made any sort of inaccurate or misleading statement when he said that.1 point

The Book Thief is one of the best thematically structured Williams scores in recent decades. It is a brilliant score. Perhaps the construction of the OST does not bring that out fully, a chronological treatment might help. Each cue is wonderfully constructed on its own and within the narrative structure1 point
