  1. I've never heard this piece before. It's interesting to hear a JW piece that has such a strong marching band/band quality to it. That extended drum solo was a lot of fun.

  2. I got my copy today and am listening now. Such a fantastic score. It takes me back to being a very young boy seeing this in theaters and being introduced to Horner but also being amazed at how very different it was from Goldsmith's score but fantastic in its own way. I wonder why they didn't want him to reuse any of Goldsmith's fantastic work which I felt was odd at the time. I hadn't yet seen the "Space Seed" original but felt it did a great job of making it clear to me as a kid without knowing the original tv episode. I was deeply heartbroken at the death of spock sequence though I hadn't fully grasped the depth of their relationship. At the time, cable tv and HBO didn't yet even exist so we had very limited exposure to this material. I don't even think VHS existed yet (or my family didn't have it) so I only knew of Star Trek and Twilight Zone from CBS tv Saturday night episodes which aired very late...maybe 10:30 pm till midnight and as a young kid, mom wouldn't let me stay up to watch. I eventually waited till she was asleep so I could watch. I'm actually surprised the sound isn't better. It's great to relive these cues but for a "remastered edition", I think these should sound better. I prefer the sound on the previous "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (expanded soundtrack)". Compare to earlier Star Wars which stands up far better sound wise. According to the booklet, this was recorded at Warner Brothers which I know well and have recorded at myself (see picture) but the sound stage is close mic'ed and tight. This was the early days of digital but analog seemed to record a great acoustic sound more accurately. I assume audio engineers weren't looking for accuracy at that time but what would sound best in a large theater since theatrical experience was our only experience up to that point. Warner Brothers (Eastwood Scoring Stage) is on the smaller size and doesn't do great with larger orchestras (over 80 players) as you start getting players stacked up and no real room for the sound to travel or isolate the mic from louder instruments. In contrast, Sony/MGM/Streisand could accommodate 120 piece orchestra but would probably suffer with chamber or intimate sounds. These are generalizations and lots of other factors impact this as well such as who is the recording engineer, their approach, the style of the music, etc. I was also surprised by some nods to Bernard Herrmann I hadn't previously noticed until this release. He cast a long shadow on the genre and those composers coming up like Horner, Elfman, etc. I'm specifically referring to the slow passages with muted brass recalling "Day the Earth Stood Still" which must have musically influenced both Goldsmith and Horner.

  3. The Eiger Sanction, at it's place. Ahhhh....

  4. Ah, but people have done that, by replacing some film tracks with their album equivalents that have more music. And you could do the same with Monsignor too. It just doesn't work with Eiger. There's only one extra passage, and it is completely disparate from everything the film score does, and replaces the original ending of the main title that expertly leads into the rest of the score. At best, you could do Holko's suggestion and play the album main title after the end credits if you wanted.

  7. I enjoyed the movie. The trailer kind of made it look like Inception, which it is not at all. It’s more of a romantic film noir mystery crime story with a sci fi element. It takes it’s time and you need to pay attention to the plot but it’s a rather good movie, just not the movie that some people thought it would be. Visually it’s very impressive with the design of the flooded cities and there is a great underwater sequence involving a piano which looked amazing on the big screen. Also, WB’s complete lack of marketing for the movie and the simultaneous HBO max release must have hurt it’s chances. Seriously people don’t know this movie exists due to an almost complete lack of marketing. I find it a shame actually how these kinds of movies get so overlooked in favour of Fast and Furious etc

  9. Same! All I can really add to what hasn't already been said is, when they eventually do this release, PLEASE have the "Kirby Paint & Tile Plus" ringtone as a hidden bonus track.

  11. Ah Fiddler on the Roof, now that's an important title that's still missing from my collection... Williams first Oscar win (for adaptation ie.)

  12. There'd be no reason to do that. The OST album is just re-recorded highlights from the full score, with one new passage added (a different ending for the main titles). Absolutely separately. Eiger's source music is kind of cheesy and would ruin the flow of the wonderful film score imo.

  15. Well they recently said that there were more music from Horner (Star Trek II), Williams (please I hope it wasn't Time Tunnel vol.2) and Goldsmith coming this year. So I wouldn't be surprise if there next Goldsmith would be Goldsmith at 20th.

  20. Indeed. The White Lotus has been surprisingly great. I started the first episode to kill some time off while doing other stuff, thinking it was a run-of-the-mill family dramedy but it turned out to be so much more than that. It's over-the-top in parts, but always delightfully uncomfortable and entertaining with its dynamic interaction between characters. A real hoot. I also tried watching Ash Vs. Evil Dead on Netflix. I'm finding it a real slog and don't think I'll continue any further. The campy gorefest format works best as a short movie, but dragging out over 3 seasons... Apart from a few great practical effects splatter scenes, this show is pretty terrible.

  22. Gardiner and Mozart's Requiem, what an Odd choice. This recording using mainly male voices (boys and men) add some tragedy to this pathetic work relating our vanishing existence. Different matury of male voices are very effective to me for this particular work. And it's the short version of the Requiem, removing all the parts that are not from Mozart himself... https://www.discogs.com/Mozart-Kirkby-Watkinson-Rolfe-Johnson-Thomas-The-Academy-Of-Ancient-Music-Christopher-Hogwood-Requie/release/7130771

  26. This morning I grabbed my copy and took the shrinkwrap off, and listened to the whole album on my way to work. It made for an... interesting car ride, and I was again blown away by how good the track "Dogs, Ponies, and Old Ruins" is. Great stuff right there. The whole album is very nice assembled, has a great flow throughout. On my lunch break today I checked out the booklet for the first time. I LOVE the nice, simple, pleasing art design by Nacho Govantes; It makes every easy to read (not always the case in specialty label booklets!), and the numerous production stills were nice too. I do not know how same / different Burlingame's liner notes are in here compared to the 2007 version for Prometheus, but I really enjoyed reading them again, and am thankful for the included the track-by track part that helps give context to what scenes the music is written for. The debut of John Williams' liner notes for the OST album that never happened are pretty cool! Getting to read his own words on how he went about writing the "real world" music and the "other world" music is terrific. And it's so cool that three pictures from the recording sessions at CTS Studios showing Williams, Yamash'ta, and Altman! Overall a superb release, especially for the 16,95€ retail price! Now here's hoping the original scoring elements turn up somewhere one day!

  28. Awesome. Only place I’ve seen that number of limited editions for sale in a regular cd store is FNAC on the Champs-Élysées in Paris but the markup was pretty horrific even if you take postage into account. Think I bought a couple of things years ago I intended to get but hadn’t got round to, just for the novelty. Of course I didn’t have any means to get the music onto my iPod…

  32. Having listened to this a couple of times I now have the tune stuck in my head... pretty damn catchy and a nice change in vibe to his other Olympic pieces, a bit more fun rather than heraldic. Shame it's not had a proper recording, I can only assume he didn't care for it enough to stick it either on the Summon the Heroes or Call of the Champions albums. Having said that, it kinda loses a bit of momentum by the end, but still worthy of being committed to disc. Still, nice to have this version even if it's in mono.

  37. Damn, sorry to hear this. I've never been able to understand the unwillingness from certain licensors and rights holders in this type of thing. By the way, there's a considerable amount of completely unreleased Horner; hopefully their fate will be better than VOLUNTEERS. I did a thread on these items on FSM awhile back: https://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=114840&forumID=1&archive=0 With deceased composers, it's always important to get the unreleased work out there -- the only "new" music we will ever get.

  40. @David Müller You are very welcome! Thank you so much for making an account just to comment here! That means the world to us. I'm so thankful to hear everything you had to say about the project, and that it has a life outside of people just clicking on it every Sunday. Your desire to hear thematic continuity is exactly why we started this project in the first place, so you've come to the right thread. Hope to hear more of your thoughts in the future! @superultramegaa Ok. So. Yes. This has been discussed many times, and I agree with you. I could barely go back and listen to the GOF cues when I needed to check or reference something while writing OOTP and HBP. So I feel you. We were toddlers at this when we first started, and absolutely want to go back and fix it up (as well as some stuff at the beginning of OOTP). It really came down to whether or not we wanted to restore GOF before or after tackling DH. I've finished my work on HBP and am planning to start DH1 in September while Molly finishes mixing and mastering for the remaining cues in Prince. So the short of it is that GOF is up in the air as to "when" but it's absolutely going to happen. BP

  42. The Suicide Squad (2021) It's better than the 2016 movie but it's still not good. Weak characters, a few poor actors, jokes that fall flat, the first half feels like an episode of The A-Team, iffy CGI, ... If you're not going to make a serious movie then please make it funny. DC is doomed! 3,5/10

  43. This is a comprehensive list of all movies that were scored by Jerry Goldsmith and destinated for the big screen in chronological order. I didn't include TV movies, TV-series or the two mini-series (QB VII and Masada). I did, however, include all the rejected scores for motion pictures that are at least known to be recorded (Alien Nation, Gladiator, The Public Eye, 2 Days in the Valley and Timeline). For the collectors, I've noted the name of the label and release date of each score's most recent and most expanded CD set. I will eventually add what type of release (OST, expansion etc.) we're dealing with. In case you spot any mistakes that you have the correct answer to, tell me. #Tot. #Dec.
