  1. Today during the rehearsal they played: Olympic Fanfare and Theme Close Encounters of the third Kind Suite from Far and Away Three Pieces from Harry Potter Jurassic Park Finale The maestro was in great shape, how incredible to see him live for the first time, I still can't believe this has happened!!!!

  3. I attended the rehearsal too and John Looks fantastic. He walks as a 89 year old man but when conducting he looks 30 years younger!

  4. Williams visited the Thomaskirche in Leipzig with ASM on this past sunday before Berlin! He visited Bach's grave. Here is a photo https://m.facebook.com/Thomaskirche.Leipzig/photos/a.527353427472706/1651641538377217/?type=3&source=48

  6. The orchestra is indeed having its FIRST rehearsal today.

  7. The obvious rejoinder is that he himself couldn't make one as good as the original either.

  8. My dad, God rest his soul, introduced me to classic rock n’ roll. He introduced me to The Beatles; I’ve been a fan ever since. He was a huge Beatles fan; he owned all of their albums on CD. He knew how to play the drums and would often rock to some of their greatest songs. He also owned the DVD collection of The Beatles documentaries, as well as Yellow Submarine, A Hard Day’s Night, and Help (which I still own, though I intend to upgrade the three films to getting the 4K/Blu-Ray releases). In 2016, at age 56, he was diagnosed with colon cancer. He fought for two years. In January 2018, he was put in hospice care; I put Pandora on and had his Beatles station playing by his bedside. He was at peace. He passed away February 2018. I have been looking forward to this documentary series since it was first announced. I will watch this in memory of and in dedication to my dad.

  9. I can't wait for the inevitable Berlin vs Vienna poll. And the flub poll!

  10. Looks like this is actually happening... If I had not been to Vienna, I would be beside myself right now. As it is, I confess I'm only very excited

  12. And it was SO GOOD! As much as I loved Smith, like you said by the end I was rolling my eyes a bit. (Not counting Day and Time of the Doctor. Those are masterpieces.) Oh yes. The speech to the Masters is one of the best things about new Who. It's funny, the last Capaldi season is clearly intended to be Who for New Viewers. But then he drops Missy and Simm's Master. I don't know how that works for viewers that started with The Pilot. Capaldi might be my favorite NuWho Doctor. And I never knew it while I was watching.

  14. Lost in New York a classic? The score is the only reason I’m glad it was made.

  15. I saw the trailer, and I have a few things to say. I REALLY hope that John Debney made NO references to the Maestro's work to Home Alone. This film, Home Sweet... I cannot even finish the title. The tag line for this film, "Holiday classics were made to be broken," REALLY speaks volumes. This film cannot break the timelessness of the original classic, of course. Both Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost In New York are genuine Christmas classics. This upcoming film, just from the trailer alone, looks EMBARRASSINGLY AWFUL. I am not giving this film a second-thought. The only thing I am looking forward to regarding this trash are the negative reviews.

  17. As I said earlier, I desperately want to escape Potzdamer Platz and immediate surroundings when I'm in Berlin. Tourist trap with astronomical prices, bad service and bad food. So if we're doing a pre-concert dinner, I'm looking at other neighbourhoods instead (Kreuzberg or Prenzlauer Berg, for example -- a gastronomy buff friend of mine has recommended a long list of great budget restaurants in these areas). And we'll just have to plan sufficient time to get to the Philharmonie (should be about 30 minutes with public transportation, depending). But for a post-concert drink, I'm game for anywhere. Doesn't matter. Even in the worst tourist spots in Berlin, the beer is still much cheaper than in the most ragged pub in Norway.

  20. I’ll give it a listen. But first Sheena Easton… For Your Eyes Only… only for you… you’ll see why no one else will see. Mind you, I can’t imagine her singing that about Daniel Craig… although the passions do collide in me. Hmmm.

    Star Wars Disenchantment

It’s very different to what we got: there emperor is just a beaurocrat who serves as a puppet of others, not the mastermind and powerful sorcerer we see in the prequel trilogy; the timeframe is much longer, with the Empire being around for at least three decades rather than a mere 19 years. The original Star Wars doesn’t have prequels: the Empire Strikes Back does.

  24. It's embarrassing how much of an obvious "throw something together quick" cash-in it is. Like Holko said, it follows the formula of the first one but has none of the heart or groundedness (not a word, I know).

  29. I remember listening to the opening theme of this 1988 National Geographic special a few years ago, and thinking "where have I heard that before?". Of course, it turns out Holdridge repurposed his theme from WIZARDS & WARRIORS for this -- a theme I was intimately familiar with from the iconic GREAT FANTASY ADVENTURE ALBUM. Not everything is equally exciting, but it has that unashamed, consonant orchestral style of the decade nailed down.

  32. I'll also be staying at Grimm's hotel on Potsdamer Platz with a friend. If you see a guy in a Williams-related T-shirt there, it's probably me.

  33. I made it half way through the trailer, and I had to turn it off. Culkin was OK, as a smart-ass kid, but it just doesn't work with some borderline pubescent, middle-class, toffee-nose, English private school, asshole - sorry - arsehole. This Christmas, I'll be watching the genuine article.

  34. I refuse! My kids already love the original and I haven't even shown them Lost in New York. They wanna watch shitty Home Alone sequels, they can do it when they're older and more in control of their own viewing habits.

  35. It looks like a beat for beat remake of the first one, slight variations in characterization but whatever. Clearly it wasn’t made for people my age (nor was the original) and I’m certain we’ll watch it with our kid this year.

  37. A lot of our international travel has been based around Williams' concerts as well lol I do wish we were going to this Berlin show especially since Germany is a country neither of us have been to yet, but the awkward group ticketing when they first went on sale combined with being unsure about covid travel at the time led us to skip it. We won't miss Milan, though! Is @Ricard going to this concert? Would be great to finally meet in person!

  38. I'm with you Disco Stu. I got into the revival with Capaldi, then went back to the beginning. But series 9 stands out as an absolute ripper of a run. Production, writing, music, Capaldiness - all brilliant.

  39. I gotta admit I stopped watching Chibnall's show before the end of his first series because it was boring the hell out of me. I'm the rare person whose favorite era is the Moffat-Capaldi and my favorite series of the entire revived era is series 9, which holds up so well to rewatches.
