  1. I went to the reshearsal with my childhood friend. I'm 27, he's 26 and 20 of for those years we've been listening to John Williams together. I can't really describe how it felt to see him live. My friend and I couldn't even really talk about it, and I guess it's meaningless to try anyway. Let's just say it was a deeply emotional experience. I feel the need to share this experience with someone who might understand it, but I can't even put it into words (not even in Danish, if I tried, haha). I just feel so lucky to live in a world with and at the same time as John Williams!

  2. Of the Star Wars sequels, The Last Jedi proved the most faithful to John Williams' intended score, with one major exception: the opening Escape sequence. After Williams recorded the score's first 8 cues, Rian Johnson restructured the entire sequence, forcing deep music edits to match the revised opening. Sadly Williams followed suit on his OST, presenting a heavily truncated suite of these cues in Main Title and Escape. Now, with the aid of sheet music and mockups, I've reconstructed the film's opening sequence, reintegrating deleted footage where available, and restored Williams' complete score to its intended glory. In my opinion, the best continuous stretch of film scoring in the trilogy. Enjoy! Williams' ability to ratchet up musical tension is simply unrivaled, paired with a climactic release to make the hair on your neck stand up. A shame neither the film nor soundtrack presented Williams' complete intended score; this had every potential of being the greatest opening track of any Star Wars soundtrack, period. Alas, the wait continues for expanded releases that showcase the Maestro's complete musical vision. Special shout out to @BrotherSound and another anonymous user for their help!

  4. Splitting this out from the Chicago thread, because it's a bit off-topic there. According to Banderas, they're shooting until December. As for how quickly Mangold can turn around films: 3:10 to Yuma - Wrapped Jan 20, 2007, released Aug 21, 2007 (7 month turnaround) The Wolverine - Wrapped Nov 21, 2012, scoring sessions March, released July 26, 2013 (8 month turnaround) Logan - Wrapped Aug 23, 2016, released Feb 17, 2017 (6 month turnaround) No confirmation on Indy 5's editor yet but safe bet it'll be Mike McCusker. This is a great interview where he discusses his workflow with Mangold: In summary, Mike edits the entire film in previz before shooting starts, works during principal photography (staying within a day or two of dailies), and replaces previz shots with actual footage as Mangold shoots it. His first cut is usually ready two weeks after production ends, at which point Mangold starts his director's cut. So based on that timeline, a preview screening for Williams in January seems possible, after which he'll go off and start sketching themes. The actual spotting session would presumably happen later, in February? In 2012 Williams said he was averaging, "as much as a minute done or a minute and a half done in a day." So is January through May (with sessions after Carnegie Hall on April 21) sufficient to complete an Indiana Jones score, at 90 years old? He must be aiming to finish before June, with Chicago and Milan on the agenda.

  5. Hello, I'm a French fan, coming tomorrow alone in Berlin to attend to Friday's concert. It's my first John Williams' concert (3 years ago, I went to Royal Albert Hall (London) but he infortunately cancelled). I would be happy to meet other fans.

  7. No idea how this slipped under the radar but I stumbled upon this article tonight. It details a 2017 AES presentation called “Bearing Witness: The Music of Star Wars, Archiving Art and Technology,” in which Dann Thompson and Leslie Ann Jones (the Skywalker Sound employees who transferred all known scoring elements for the first six Star Wars scores) discuss their efforts to track down the scoring masters, what elements were located, how they archived all the music, etc. This is a listing for the event. An excerpt from the article: At the bottom it says this presentation would be available to download, but I cannot find any trace of a recording: Has anyone heard of this presentation before, or happened to attend, or have more info about what was discussed? It seems they went into great detail about the elements and their condition, how they were preserved, even the different album/film mixes and John's mixing process on the prequel OSTs with Pat Sullivan. They mention the Star Wars Main Title coming from a mag source, but what about the multi-tracks? Pretty elusive information we've been speculating for decades now! Seems like a must-have for anyone curious about the status of the Star Wars recording masters (feared missing or lost), but I cannot find any trace of where to access or watch this presentation. Anyone have any clues?

  9. Intermission time. The music sounds fantastic in this venue. John seems to be having a blast, often sharing smiles with the players during the performances. He's also his usual sharp self especially for a 89 year old. He was very eloquent when describing his experience of visiting Berlin for the first time. There are many standing ovations which is always heartwarming to see. I laughed when John said he never knows what Spielberg is doing next and "Indiana Jones is changing by the second!"

  11. I can relate. I am a fan since 1984, and when I saw him in Vienna from the first row walking by to the podium, just 2 meters from me, it was a great moment.

  17. My dad, God rest his soul, introduced me to classic rock n’ roll. He introduced me to The Beatles; I’ve been a fan ever since. He was a huge Beatles fan; he owned all of their albums on CD. He knew how to play the drums and would often rock to some of their greatest songs. He also owned the DVD collection of The Beatles documentaries, as well as Yellow Submarine, A Hard Day’s Night, and Help (which I still own, though I intend to upgrade the three films to getting the 4K/Blu-Ray releases). In 2016, at age 56, he was diagnosed with colon cancer. He fought for two years. In January 2018, he was put in hospice care; I put Pandora on and had his Beatles station playing by his bedside. He was at peace. He passed away February 2018. I have been looking forward to this documentary series since it was first announced. I will watch this in memory of and in dedication to my dad.

  18. Today during the rehearsal they played: Olympic Fanfare and Theme Close Encounters of the third Kind Suite from Far and Away Three Pieces from Harry Potter Jurassic Park Finale The maestro was in great shape, how incredible to see him live for the first time, I still can't believe this has happened!!!!

  21. Some interesting points from a radio interview this evening with Andrea Zietzschmann, General Manager of Berliner Philharmoniker: BerlinPhil tried for a few years to get Williams to do a project together in "Waldbühne" stage (https://www.waldbuehne-berlin.de/en/) but it didn't work out because of scheduling conflicts. Says they tried to get him to conduct subscription concerts instead. Is happy to have him, at almost 90 years, conduct BerlinPhil, especially because he hasn't really conducted in Europe before, except Vienna. When asked about the atmosphere in the rehearsals: says it was Williams' wish to conduct the BerlinPhil, that he is very curious and interested about Berlin as it's his first time in the city; Appreciates Williams as great human and artist, many musicians know his filmscores and associate some kind of life experience with his music; that it is a special experience (to have him personally conduct etc.) for all involved. About a potential album release: says they're currently thinking about how to release it (mentions CD, Digital Concert Hall, and the radio broadcast); says they hope that they can release something for a large audience. https://www.rbb-online.de/rbbkultur/radio/programm/schema/sendungen/der_tag/archiv/20211014_1600/kultur_aktuell_1610.html Direct .mp3-download of the interview: https://rbbmediapmdp-a.akamaihd.net/content/9c/58/9c58d3b6-e875-45f5-ab59-c7d7a8cc0d0e/776be749-8813-43ac-8d67-03f6d3e51214_0a471277-09af-463f-9e32-29e5a5f05780.mp3 Radio broadcast on Saturday: https://www.rbb-online.de/rbbkultur/radio/programm/schema/sendungen/berliner_philharmoniker/archiv/20211016_2000.html So I guess it's pretty much confirmed (at least very likely) that we'll get some kind of audio release. Look at all the microphones in @GlastoEls photos Can't wait for Saturday

  22. This was absolutely phenomenal. @Jurassic Shark I know we were the ones to have some problems with the VPO but you don’t need to worry this was absolutely and totally on another level. I’ve never seen an orchestra play so engaged and so in control of everything that they do. The inevitable recording of this will be legendary.

  26. I hope we hear some sort of confirmation that he's working on this or Indy by the end of the year. It's exciting when he has back-to-back projects but also fills me with dread King Mark-style.

  31. Dear JW Fans, Hope you’re well. I was due to fly from the UK to attend the concert on Saturday 16th October 2021 but I have tested positive for Covid-19. I am absolutely devastated. Thus, I have one ticket for sale that is in an excellent position and will provide an outstanding experience. I am just looking for face-value and I can confirm that is is transferable. It is: E Links Row 2 Seat 4 I can organise payment through PayPal and because I have an electronic ticket, will email immediately. Please do get in touch if interested. Liam.

  33. This is a great question that we can only speculate about. I do think that since Fabelmans has already wrapped shooting and Indy 5 is still shooting for 2 more months, JW will do Fabelmans first, then Indy 5. So if he sits down with Spielberg to watch a rough cut of The Fabelmans this month, October of 2021, and composes the score from then through the holidays or so, the whole score could be recorded in January. Then he sees an Indy 5 rough cut in January or February 2022, and begins composing cues at his house from then until Carnegie Hall in April. Then maybe a bunch of recording sessions throughout May, before he leaves for his 2 big concerts, then records revisions, inserts, and pickups in late June or early July before the film opens in late July? Something like that?

  36. @May the Force be with You There used to be at least two good stores for soundtracks in Berlin, one actually specialized on soundtracks, the other a second hand store with a great selection of bootlegs. I am afraid, they don't exist anymore. Best choice currently is Dussmann Kulturkaufhaus in Friedrichstrasse, I would say. They have mainly books, but they also used to have a good soundtrack selection. And in the classical music department you could find the one or the other Film composer's work for the concert hall.

  37. Yeah, me too. I’d figured KotCS took enough heat for the aliens at the end to guarantee no one would try to incorporate something so “sci-fi”-esque into an Indy property ever again. However, one caveat to my disdain here would be if the movie involves people attempting to figure out time travel—and not getting anywhere with it because it’s impossible and they just haven’t realized it yet. That could be an intriguing plot device, I dunno.

  44. When was the last time Williams conducted a choir at a concert? It would be wonderful if, in a place like the Teatro alla Scala, the temple of the world's opera, he would use it in several pieces. Imagine hearing Duel of the Fates, Hym to the Fallen or Call of the Champions there...
