  3. Well, good news all around: A theatrical presentation, streaming premiere and 4K announcement all this year. From the glimpses seen in the trailer, and what I've read in the articles above, I think this is going to be a fantastic release. A few things that really set this apart from the Star Wars / George Lucas enhancements: Although this is legitimately the Director's vision (a restoration of it anyway), the original theatrical cut is also easily available and preserved. No revisionist history. The standards for the effects on this are keeping in mind the style and what was possible in 1979, and not adding effects just to add them. Instead, much of the focus is on tightening the edit, tweaking and restoring character moments and development in the film. This is a win-win all around for me.

  4. WHOOOOOOOOO! Ok, now I'm getting a little more excited about it: https://www.startrek.com/news/david-c-fein-shares-the-secrets-of-the-star-trek-the-motion-picture-the-directors-edition The biggest thing that was lacking for me in 2001 was the sound. I knew what they wanted and I think that their instincts were right. But little things like using the sound FX from the Enterprise B for the bridge were just off. I was watching... Well, both versions I guess. Anyway watching them both the other day and some of the dubbing sounded so flat. Very 1979 of course. I wonder what they'll be able to do with that with the original ADR? I was afraid that this would be the 2001 with HD renders of the visual FX. But from this and comments from Matessino (about the music editing with current tech and his having 20 years more experience) this might really be something remarkable.

  6. Whoever gets the gig, we must keep in mind that it was someone who got Williams' trust. So even if it is an unknown composer, he or she will be working with a brand new John Williams Star Wars theme - something only Powell has achieved for now. That's a hell of an accomplishment, whether you're a novice or a veteran.

  7. The witches of Eastwick. What better way to get in JW mode for tonight's HP1 concert? The dance is SOOOOO delicious, although I don't know how I feel about repeating it twice. I love dry violin playing. And the ballroom sequence obviously. Don't love the muted sound of the recording though.

One major default I've always found to the film is the sets, they are "closed" and claustrophobic, unatural. We don't believe we are in Neverland, we are in a studio.

  9. I have to say that Music Box Records is the exact opposite experience in terms of delivery and service. With all my orders the delivery has taken 2 days to Finland from France without fail and always with up-to-date tracking. Plus they to my surprise in this latest package with HTTYD 2 even included replacement discs for my The Eiger Saction and The Sleepy Hollow sets I ordered via them without me even having to specifically ask for them.

  10. TBH I thought FB1 was a decent and fun movie with lots of things to like. I would’ve been happy with a franchise of similar movies. But I just can’t process how bad the second entry was. Felt like I was watching a book.

  12. So glad Williams chose to shorten the name of this piece from it's working title of "Fanfare for Solo Trumpet To Celebrate the Reopening of David Geffen Hall After Being Closed Since March 2020 And Undergoing a $550 Million Renovation That Was Originally Scheduled To Be Completed In 2024 But Finished 2 Years Ahead of Time."

  13. To my mind, it absolutely is the Gold Standard. The Alien Anthology set is also a Gold Standard in a similar way.

  14. I don’t get why the BLADE RUNNER Blu-ray Set can’t be the gold standard with classic movies that have multiple versions. Include all of them and let the viewer decide which version they want to watch. Period.

  16. If we are talking 90s Goldsmith that stands among his greatest work, I personally prefer THE SHADOW (in complete form). For me, LIONHEART > FIRST KNIGHT (apart from the performance), even though I really love FIRST KNIGHT. Yavar

  17. I thought they did a great job with just upgrading the existing effects where necessary and adding a few subtle extras. I do kinda feel that showing all of V'Ger wasn't really necessary, the glimpses of the various sections as the Enterprise flies over are more exciting than the whole thing, but I can understand the impetus to do so. I have to admit that those shots of the tiny outline of the Enterprise against V'Ger always gave a sense of scale that Star Trek ship effects rarely (if ever) get. As a kid I was enthralled by those shots in a way that the more standard ship effects from the later movies didn't quite enter my imagination (effective though most undoubtedly are... Star Trek V... not you, although even that has a couple of neat moments). However, I think the subtle enhancements to, in particular, the shots where the crew walk to the core of V'Ger are vastly improved with the hexagonal tiles materialising and the backdrop of the Enterprise now correctly proportioned. Matt painting artists pre-CGI really were wizards but that's one of the few where they really didn't quite get the perspective right although I acknowledge that the curves of the saucer section must be a nightmare to get it right from the angle they went for. Still, can't wait!

  18. Have you seen the SD version? I'm sure if they could have they would have done all of the FX with 1978 tech. CG is just a means. With very few exceptions the mission statement was always "make it look like all of the other fx". (There's even a scene where they animated on twos - 12 frames per second - like would have been done in the original.) It's not a Lucas "Ohhh look what I can do now!" but more "Do it like we didn't run out of time!" Even if you knew all of this, maybe someone else doesn't. Oh, and ^^^ this!

  19. Seems like it's high time to update this @Brundlefly -- particularly with the premiere release of Jerry Goldsmith's very first film score, Black Patch (1957), paired with The Man (1972). Here's an epic 3+ hour Goldsmith Odyssey podcast with the Intrada team who worked on this new Royal Scottish National Orchestra recording, including conductor William Stromberg and reconstructionist Leigh Phillips. For anyone curious about the music we feature extensive sound samples: https://goldsmithodyssey.buzzsprout.com/159614/9988703-production-report-black-patch-the-man-2021-intrada-recording And for anyone who would be excited to SEE the original full Zoom conversation pre-editing (and sadly without any music samples), in a first for The Goldsmith Odyssey we put the raw video up on YouTube: This is my favorite new Goldsmith recording since the composer himself did an Intrada two-fer of Rio Conchos and The Artist Who Did Not Want to Paint with the London Symphony Orchestra back in 1989! Very curious what other people think. Yavar

  25. Agreed 100%, Alex. It's a film that really does repay repeated viewings. It's easily a top-5 Spielberg film, for me. Actually, it's top-4. I don't have a top-5.

  26. It is, actually. The phase after 'Legend' (which must have struck him hard) until 'Basic Instinct' or even 'First Knight' was the weakest in his career with some borderline offensive offerings, but he was always the film music Tesla, with failure being at least a 50% option when he tried new stuff like the Fairlight. 'Link' is much better than many others of that time, but it's also unafraid being goofy, something especially hardcore Williams fans are understandably are wary about.

  29. If we look at the fax numbers at the top of Williams' insert sketches for The Phantom Menace... We see two numbers. The 0181 number is Dakota Music - the music prep company for the film. The other number - 01714931895 - was the phone number for the Four Seasons on Park Lane in Central London. The hotel does indeed have piano that can be hired for events (and presumably composer guests).

  30. Thanks Jay, I don't like to be that guy who bitches about delivery issues as I know shit happens, but it's getting kinda annoying now! First time I got two copies of something (think it was Babe) and they sent me another copy! Then another copy of Lionheart turned up weeks after I had received my original order. I'm just glad it had HTTYD2 in it, I think I'd have had a meltdown not getting it knowing that it was stuck at some sorting office since Saturday (thanks Royal Mail tracking app...). I'm guessing it's an international store thing. They seem to have a new fulfilment company but given they are making the same errors, I'm wondering if it's not just the old one with new branding! They have literally one job. Anyway... moving on! Awesome you got yours, hope you're loving it as much as I am. This is proper holy grail stuff for me, I absolutely love HTTYD2, it's everything that makes me love film music, tuneful, uplifting, sad, epic, brilliantly using the full scope of a symphony orchestra and yeah, I even love the song, (I love Jonsi and Sigur-Ros, which helps) especially when hints of JP's themes are woven in and out of the texture like echoes, it's magical. Excuse me a moment, I think I have something in my eye...

Sorry, I meant to type " proto" as in prototype, but it auto-corrected me. And I had thought it wasn't used at all in Superman IV, although that could be my memory failing. The concert version in its full form released in the Blue Box was pretty revelatory at the time. If Jeremy's theme does appear in the film, it was brief enough to fade with any memory I have of the film. EDIT: I stand corrected. According to the Blue Box liner notes, the theme was dialed out from every occurrence except for one scene. So, it was used. Now I want to watch it again, and see if I despise it. I remember not liking it, but active hate for a movie... I'm not sure I could given how delightful the score is, and it's part of the experience.

Perhaps surprisingly, as I'm a huge Spielberg devotee generally, I really hate this movie. I can enjoy watching it for the craft of the production design/cinematography, and I love the score of course, but I pretty much hate every single thing about the story and characters. This held the bottom spot in my Spielberg ranking for many years, until RP1 came out (and these are the only two Spielberg movies I truly dislike).

  37. There was a rushed post-production in 1978/79, and they didn't have time to do a propor sound mix, do all of the VFX they wanted, or have preview screenings that would have told them that the VFX were overwhelming the characters at the time. Money may also have been a factor, as the film was already frontloaded with money from the aborted Phase II, that provided the basis for designs, sets etc., including the Pilot script that turned into the theatrical screenplay. TMP theatrical release was essentially a late-stage workprint of the movie, and the only film Robert Wise was unhappy with at release.

  41. You say that, but the 2020 Broadway production that got abruptly halted actually changed quite a bit about the material (cutting out a few numbers, changing key details, and really pushing a type of edge that boarders on a bit much). Hell, I heard that the only thing the Bernstein estate requested of Spielberg was for him to include a piece Leonard had made for the musical that didn’t make the original film. Based on that, I know the naysayers will be even more peeved that Steven "played it so safe" if the floor was apparently that open, but I personally feel that there was enough added and changed about the work that it organically stands out from a lot of productions and the previous adaptation.

  46. Would be funny if Williams' theme for Fawkes the Phoenix resurfaces in this totally different series, when subsequent composers never brought it back in the series it was written for. Yeah, that unusually lengthy recording schedule has Hobbit 1 written all over it. I reckon this is gonna be filled with direct lifts of JW's scores. Although it might just be a desperate marketing department, based on how much they're shoehorning Hogwarts into their campaign.

  47. So here's the deal. Opinions such as these are perfectly valid to post: And nobody here should ever make people feel they can't share opinions such as that! HOWEVER, it is not implied that this therefore gives anyone free reign to repeatedly, in close proximity to each other within a thread, continually be negative about something over and over again. We actually have a clause in the rules about a persistent negative attitude. Again, negative opinions are absolutely allowed, but you cannot be surprised or offended if you make a series of negative posts in a single thread, and that then people might want to speak up and defend the subject matter at hand. As a general rule of thumb, what tends to be the procedure is, once you have stated a negative opinion, you can back out and let people who enjoy the thing that you have a negative opinion on enjoy it, instead of continually returning to repeat your negative opinion. In this particular case, it might have made more sense to start a new thread discussing Giacchino's body of work instead of cluttering up a thread where people are just trying to talk about one particular score of his. Additionally, statements like this? That's closer to just straight up libel than an opinion which deserves to be protected here. I would give you the benefit of the doubt and just say you are being very passionate about your opinions on him in general, however your followup posts paint a more clearer picture that to me reads like you just wanted to come in here and make a bold claim to purposely get people riled up and have a heated debate with you about Giacchino. Just look at how combative you get in all these followup posts: I think that your reactions to what others are saying are consistently kicking things up a notch from the tone others have, and feels to me like an attempt to bring everyone up to a combative level, when nobody else was trying to do that at all. To be clear, it's completely valid and on topic to debate the merits of The Batman's score, good and bad, in this thread, and it's perfectly fine to discuss Giacchino's body of work, good and bad, maybe not necessarily in this thread, but on this forum in general. Everybody should feel they are allowed to post negative opinions about his body of work and positive opinions about his body of work. You don't need to make up claims about what he is trying to be to do so, and you don't need to call every opinion different than yours an "attack". Finally, this idea you attempt to make? I have to stop you right there and say: NO, no no! First of all, we are not a forum consisting of some group-think mentality that everything JW does is perfect gold, and everything every other composer does is lesser. We are a forum full of independent people with their own independent opinions of JW and other's works, and every opinion is allowed to be shared here. Sure, the forum started in 1999 as a forum dedicated to the works of John Williams, but of course in the 23 years since it has evolved into a full film music discussion forum where everyone can talk about any score they want. It is not a requirement to like the music of John Williams to use our forum! Sure, many of us do think he's the best composer ever (myself included), but that does not mean I have to look down on every other composer just because they aren't as good as him. So yes, people are absolutely allowed to love the music of Giacchino, or even consider him the best composer ever, on this John Williams forum! Again - all opinions are valid! So to wrap up, I think it's time to return this thread to being specifically about The Batman's score - there's still alot to discuss about it. If people want to have a civilized discussion about Giacchino's body of work, absolutely feel free to do so in a thread dedicated to such a thing, and in that thread, everyone should be respectful of other's opinions, but also should not make bold claims that can't be backed up or repeat the same things ad nauseum that don't let an actual discussion happen organically. Thanks!
