  1. I think people here will appreciate these. I stumbled upon some archives on the KillerMoviesForums that had some Hyperspace posts archived from 2005 that I had thought were lost forever. These were blogposts written by Pablo Hidalgo during the making of Revenge of the Sith and were posted on the paywalled Hyperspace service on starwars.com which no longer exists. I'm very happy to see that these aren't lost forever, there's a lot of valuable information in them I'll paste the John Williams relevant ones here: 2/3/2005 "The Score Begins": 2/4/2005 "Recording Revenge": 2/8/2005 "Con Anima": 2/9/2005 "An Energetic Start": 2/10/2005 "Finale":

  2. The Aliens reference at 0:33! This piece is the best action piece of the score, I think. It's just pure Horner. The whole thing is a beautiful mix of Horner's action style in Aliens and Titanic with those scraping strings and metalic percussion, and then it's expertly driven with Franglen's great Family Theme throughout.

  4. It's absolutely essential. It's a rare case of an expansion where an unused alternate is actually one of the very best cues from the entire score:

  5. Just saw the film - the score is great! The film was great too, but the score really stood out and was both interesting and effective. Can't wait to listen to the album now, but I am pretty sure already it's one of my favorites of the year

  7. I've heard he's great, but I'm still ripping this box set and haven't listened to any of it yet. I've been meaning to check his symphonies out for years, but this newer box includes tons of other stuff - the piano concertos, violin concerto, Fidelio, Missa solemnis, and a couple of rarities (including chamber arrangements of the 2nd symphony and 4th piano concerto). I'll probably post some comments over in the classical thread once I've gone through the box. Correction: It's not Fidelio, it's in fact Leonore - which I find even more interesting, as I already have the Bernstein/Janowitz recording of Fidelio, but have yet to hear the original version.

  17. Domestic: 279.8m International: 601.7m (including about 100m in China) Worldwide: 881.3m It's decent, but so far not exactly the monster Disney and Cameron hoped it would be. Apparently, the weather in the US has been terrible and that worked against the movie there. However, the movie is performing great in other countries in Europe, as well as Korea and Brazil.

  18. An intellectual is what Lucas claims he is: someone who was well on his way to becoming an anthropology professor, but instead went to film school and then proceeded to pour his well-honed understanding of the human psyche, reared on dense, 4000-pages' worth of Frazer's Golden Bough, Joseph Campbell and Bruno Bettelheim, in order to distill all mythologies down into the "formula" for Star Wars. Facts are, dude went to a small community college, took a Sociology class and got a B for his pains.... I read the post that was linked: it seems to me that rather than more nuanced, Lucas' interpertation is if anything more full of holes and steeped in the most superficial, pseudo-Zen nonesense I've ever read. For instance, I - like Filoni - don't read the Jedi as intentionally flawed: that's not the impression I get from watching those films. When, say, Yoda tells Anakin to "let go" and not miss "those around you" who die, my reading of the situation is George Lucas is sitting there penning the lines thinking this is the coolest, best ersatz-Zen demeanour he can possibly conjure up for the Jedi - its not meant to be read as flawed, its meant to be read as cool. The issue is it plays to audiences like Yoda is just being an arse.

  22. Original version of the composition, not original performance*! Although as I understand, the version presented here is in fact the second version from 1806 (though still much closer in time to the original original from 1805 than the well-known final revision from 1814). *) Although I've been to the opera house where the premiere of the original version took place.

  29. For me, it's the opposite: I really liked the new family/songchord theme, but I was more mixed about the action music. There's some really impressive moments in those cues (particularly from 3:43 to the end on Na'vi attack), but they're surrounded by some rather generic combos of string ostinatos and epic trailerized versions of Horner's material.

  30. Agree. And how cool would it be if Arnold came back for the next Bond film!?! Just the thought makes me very very happy.

  31. I'm revisiting this score today, and it is fantastic. David Arnold's approach to Bond is just sooo good. The perfect evolution of John Barry's style with a feel all of his own. The tension, the swagger, the fantastic themes, and amazing action scoring.

  33. Christmas Vacation Noticed some set decoration I had never noticed before thanks to seeing it on a larger TV than I had ever seen it on before: Audrey's room has a big poster that is a close up of a cat's face, while Rusty's room has a poster of a turtle banging another turtle The fridge in their shed has a huge picture of a burger, fries, and a soda that takes up the entire side of it Clark's office at work is full of crazy stuff. There's a bowl full of huge wooden pears by the window, a glass case on his desk with some kind of deconstructed apple in it, etc. His boss's office has hourglasses of various sizes on his desk (which is more of a table than a desk...) At Christmas Eve dinner they have some weird asparagus thing on the dinner table, it's super tall and has pearl onions stuck to it!? The Griswold's attic has no insulation at all, and that circular vent/window that's just open to the outside! They'd be infested with rodents and bats, and all the heat in the house would just be directly lost through the attic! In Wal Mart, Clark puts some light bulbs down and Eddie immediately crushes them with more dog food

  34. Much appreciated, Geratewohl. Someone like Jeff Eldridge knows far more than I about this subject, but he’s kinda protective of information, I’ve found. Also, we’ve been waiting for a long time now for him to finish his website with the tv entries, so I wanted to go ahead with this project. Looking forward to sharing the next episode with you, which will include everything Williams wrote for Kraft Suspense Theater, among other things. Spent many weeks during the summer ripping audio from these, and there’s some high quality music in it.

  36. Glass Onion This film is absolutely incredible. I had high hopes, because I love the first one, but this was just insane. I really don't know how Johnson did it. The script is so brilliant, it's hard to explain. The mystery at the centre of the story is so brilliant and has so many twists and turns that I didn't see coming. I kept guessing what was going on but the film really surprised me. The reveal is also great and executed in a way that it's hidden enough but you understand right away what happened. In-cre-di-ble! The acting across the board is superb, standouts being Monae, Craig, Norton & Hudson. (Oh and keep a watchful eye, they are surpises in the cast😉) Everything from costumes, production, cinematography, editing, writing, sound deserves to be included in this years awards. Nathan Johnson's score is also superb. I stayed away from the album on purpose until I saw the film, so it was a joy to hear it. Big orchestra, themes, a bit of harpsichord. Loved it!! I highly recommend that everybody watch this. Brilliant!!

  38. Good thing. Saying trailers are "artistic expression" and not literal ads for movies is cringe. Studios don't put out trailers for "artistic expression", they want to lure people into spending cash, nothing else. This isn't about making a movie look better than it actually is, it's about them putting stuff in a trailer that they know won't be in the film, for the purpose of luring people into buying something they know they can't give them.

  42. I suspect it's as simple as this. Maybe Williams mispoke and meant "write" instead of "shoot." Or someone told him he'd get a revised ending to score (simply a new edit) and he joined the dots himself. He also said all 3 Indy pieces in Milan were from Indy 5... sometimes we just say the wrong words. Williams is remarkably sharp for a 90 year old, but let's just keep that in mind.

  46. I’ve no idea who @mattris is but thanks for the compliment Yes Jurassic it was a very interesting and challenging job, Basically about 30 of us determined about 90% of what the country saw in the U.K. cinemas . Sometimes if we didn’t think the film was commercially viable it would go straight to vid and, if it was ,we could make suggestions to the film distributor on its release date . We we’re in the unique position of seeing the film before the censor or film critics . Also for the benefit of the uneducated I personally knew the owners of National Screen Service in Perivale West London who supplied and made the film trailers and marketing materials for all the films ( NSS was also right next to Rank Film Distribution who supplied every film to every cinema in the U.K. and I know to this day the Operations Manager of that film service); and I had the privilege of watching trailers being made and how the music was put on and from where . I take it Jurassic that Mahler3 has contacted you and confirmed my credentials then?
