  1. Yeah, the amount of unreleased music we know was recorded is pretty small. There's more stuff that was written, but it may never have been recorded.

  2. Yeah, and it'll arrive on the same year as the Matessino-produced "The John Williams Star Wars Collection" and "The John Williams Indiana Jones Collection", two boxes containing every single second of music recorded by JW for all SW and IJ movies he ever worked on. Besides, it'll be only an year after the four-disc Hook complete edition, which will include songs for the movie that even Williams himself didn't remember writing. All JWFans who haven't left Earth to work on the Mars terraforming project or weren't enslaved by a despotic artificial Intelligence known as "Meta-Google-Apple" will celebrate with their flying cars on the street.

  5. There's 3 things you can hear in the film that are not on the set. 3 very minor, very short things. 1st up is "Shawm", a source music cue you can hear from 0:00-1:06 in this video (the score cue it overlaps with, heard from 0:44-end of the video, IS on the set) Next up is a very short drum & tambourine passage that I can't find on youtube, but it plays after the Buckbeak scene and before the ghost knights bust through the stained glass window And finally is a difference performance of the "Sir Cadogan" cue, where it was played at a slower tempo and there was drum and tambourine playing along with it. You can hear it from 0:00-0:19 of this video And then there is one piece of music that appeared in DVD bonus features but not the OST, LLL, or the film itself: The original version of "Marge Points The Finger", which got replaced by a revision in the film, and that revision is what's on the LLL set. The original version is heard from 1:20-1:28 of this video That's literally it in terms what what we know was recorded. As for what might have been recorded, but we have no evidence of? Well, there are at least SEVENTEEN things found in the sheet music that we don't have recordings of. You can see them all listed out in my google doc, at the bottom of the "Complete Cue List" tab https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1R7JM5QmRNh6PbgqeBH_lbj2C3WLbzxz9px3Z7GKLaAk/ You will also find links in that section to videos in which mockups of those exclusive sheet music passages are synced to film footage

    John Williams Discography

@Jay asked if some Singles listed on the disco are worth to mention because of their unique content (as they were never fully reissued otherwise). Very few (I'll skip all the weird radio edits, various pop collabs and remixes of course). "Montreal" is still unreleased on CD: This Yo-Yo Ma single was partly reissued on some compilations, but never entirely yet (I think): EDIT: The Oboe Concerto is still only available as a digital EP. And there are the three recent DG singles:

  7. There is no excuse. DG's entire catalogue consists of re-releases of the same things by 125421 different orchestras.

  11. I adore this movie. I'll never forget going in blindly spoiler free after that wonderful Teaser with the factory building the T-800. I had no idea Arnold would be the "good guy". My eyes popped out and my jaw dropped several times. If you watch it 4 times a year, try the 3D version on a projector. It slaps.

  12. James Newton Howard kind of "best-of" inspired by a concert he gave in 2017. I don't have the 17th track, I don't think this work was released.

  13. His oscar nomintaed scores I think are not among the best efforts he has done, with the exception of The Village which is exceptional. His best works have been mostly unrecognized in the awards circuit, but if you liked parts of Defiance I definitely recommend checking out The Village and A Hidden Life, which are two of his most beautiful scores, and a big highlight in his career. If you're looking for something more bombastic and fantasy oriented but still beautiful and emotional, I would say Lady in the Water, Maleficent or even the first Fantastic Beasts score are safe bets. This is just to name a few, but I think he has some really great work, even though he has also done some more average scores. His scores for Disney animated movies are also great!

  14. He didn't perform the Concerto in Vienna in 2020. The question was about concerts in Vienna in 2020 and 2022. Or at least that's how I understood it.

  15. …and the concerto. Plus overlap with the Berlin concert. Yes, but those come from a back catalogue spanning decades. I suppose they were never too keen to bring out the same programme multiple times in short succession, even if it's different recordings (especially if it isn't some repertoire work that people are already familiar with an actively seeking out multiple recordings of). Case in point (as I've mentioned before): Karajan's Alpensinfonie, the live performance of which (made less than a year after the album, iirc) (from Salzburg) has only been published by some obscure Japanese label, although it's amazing and I'd buy it in a heartbeat. But they already had a studio recording by the same orchestra and conductor, so whoever had the rights to it (DG or some other label) probably didn't think it worth releasing.

  17. Watched 'Doctor Who Am I' last night, a docu about the writer of the McGann TV movie (Matthew Jacobs) reconnecting with the US fandom after the frosty reception it received in the States. Amusing, poignant and likely to remind you just why the show has a special place in the hearts of us Whovians.

Theme from Sabrina Suite for Cello and Orchestra from Memoirs of a Geisha Jim's New Life from Empire of the Sun Avner and Daphna from Munich Rey's Theme from The Force Awakens etc. Or you do it just like @Jurassic Shark proposed and buy her the Spotlight CD.

  21. If only it had a beautiful untealed grainy 4k UHD release too. But nooooooo.... (thank God for 35mm fan scans which preserve the original look) I love this movie. Not as much as Bram Stoker's Dracula, but still it's an excellent piece of cinematic direction, and I don't understand why some people hate it. It has a great score, cinematography, sets, costumes, make-up etc., a very good performance by DeNiro and I love the overly melodramatic tone. The Arrow 4k UHD comes highly recommended!

  22. TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY (1991) dir. James Cameron Lots to unpack about this but let me start by saying that this is a textbook example of how to make a high-concept action film. I've seen it a hundred times but what struck me on this viewing is how superbly paced it is (even with the originally deleted scenes re-instated). It's also way ahead of its time - and I'm not just talking about the visual effects; it just feels more like a mid-nineties film (which doesn't sound like a massive jump until you give it a think). He might be one the most iconic movie villains of all time but the casting of Robert Patrick as the T-1000 really is splendid. While Schwarzenegger is usually the subject of amusement for his 'uncannyness', Patrick's portrayal of an [almost perfect] infiltrator truly is a chilling and terrifying performance. Genius decision. It's also one of the more visually captivating action films out there (and again, I'm not just talking about the visual effects). Cameron's skill at staging never gets praised enough; a few great examples include Connor's foster father's casual off-screen fatal metallic deep-throat, the originally deleted 'chip reset' scene (like, you didn't have to shoot it in front of a 'mirror', lol), and the escape from the hospital (cinematographer Adam Greenberg said, "Usually, in a hospital, you'd use fluorescent light and it's very boring. We decided to make the hospital a place watched by guards with strong spotlights outside shining through the windows, which gave us an overexposed, very bright look."). The final third of the film, beginning with the raid on the Cyberdyne building and ending at the steel mill, is essentially one long unrelenting action scene packed full of crazy, memorable and extravagant set-pieces. The highway chase was filmed along five and a half miles of highway and the moment when the T-1000 pilots the helicopter underneath an overpass - with only 5 feet clearance above and below - was photographed by Cameron himself, after the camera operators refused). There are only 150 VFX shots in the entire film and the sparingly used effects of the T-1000 were costed at $5 million alone, all of which push the boundaries of what was technically feasible at the time. Brad Fiedel's score might not be the most listenable thing out there but it is simply perfect. The cold and -justifiably- metallic tones are a superb match but the main theme is a beaut. To wrap up, this is one that I probably watch at least four times a year. It's one of those small handful of films in my life that, if I'm skipping channels and it's already halfway through, I'll finish; it has never suffered from over-exposure. In fact, I only decided to watch this last night because I'd just booked my tickets for Titanic next week. Yeah, I really like it.

  23. Here's proof that JNH can still write music that stands on its own for more than just a few brief minutes if you let him and/or he's in the mood:

  24. I wish I can agree with Shang Chi. To me, that film had the same issue as Black Widow. Black Widow should have been like James Bond, John Wick or Top Gun. A serious action film with some over the top sequences to fit the comic book universe. Shang Chi should be a thriller-spy film or at least closer to the comics. Instead, both films were held back by The Formula. Excessive fantasy elements, jokes, forced family interactions, tired ideas. "A Chinese superhero film! Let's add a water dragon!" And yes, the ridiculous bloated ending sequences that should be in a superman film instead.

  25. Like what the new JP reissue presents? You know Mike even includes pretty much zero difference alternate takes just because they were on a bootleg, right? But sure, getting everything 100% right when the opportunity arises wouldn't interest him at all...

  28. So I finally made a lot of my friends happy and caved to buy a BritBox subscription. I just started Doctor Who for the first time. I’m working through the classic series first and then the revival. Which frustrates some of them that have never seen Classic Who and also the ones that want me to get caught up faster. I’m excited for my long journey through each of the doctors. Right now I’m in Series 1 with William Hartnell. Loving it so far. Interesting to me how the Doctor isn’t a typical hero and actually isn’t even always the nicest guy. More of an eccentric wizard character with flaws of his own. Love the title music. When should I watch the Cushing movies btw?

  31. Well certainly the creature designs are the same, I wonder though would the overall theme of learning to be one with nature and working with it would of been the outcome of this arc? Logistics aside, wholeheartedly agree that wookiees would have better and helped ROTJ be higher regarded, not sure if it'd reach Empire levels as there's still plenty that give ROTJ a more kid friendly feel (I know that's always been the target audience but coming off Empire ROTJ has a more childish sense of humour about it outside of the Ewoks).

  32. The Ballroom Scene from Witches of Eastwick. Anything from Jane Eyre Something from Far and Away. I don’t know if the Land Race is lush, but it’s certainly big and orchestral and deserves to be on compilation albums but isn’t. Ancestral Home from the River. Id probably mine something from Stepmom.

  36. It depends on how extensive you search. Every year, I sample/listen to between 1500-2000 new scores, and find plenty of scores that would fit your bill, Konstantinos. But oftentimes, you have to look beyond the true and tired, i.e. the big blockbusters or the big "talking point" scores. I know, it's a lot of work, but it can ultimately be quite rewarding. Right now, for example, I'm listening to one of my runner-ups for the 2022 'best of' list, Manuel Riveiro's LIVE IS LIFE, which sounds like a blast from the melodic 90s.

  38. You need to update your icon list! Sure, we're fortunate to have some ancient icons still around (Williams, Schifrin, Q. Jones et.al.), but it's time to embrace a few names in the next generation as icons now. JNH is certainly one of them.

  39. What?!?! Since when was JNH not a 5-star composer? I mean, the last 15-ish years of his career have been very uneven, true, but he's one of the icons of the industry.

  40. Great find! FYI, John Williams joined Bobby Darin’s show to celebrate Darin‘s 10th anniversary in show business at the Cocoanut Grove. This event took place on March 8, 1966, just one month after Williams’ 34th birthday and 2 weeks after scoring „The Time Tunnel“.

  41. Its in all six of the original films. In all of them except for the original, it was reorchestrated and rerecorded by Williams: it fits with his main titles, being that they're in the same tonality. Therefore, I'd say that its a part of the score. Just because it wasn't composed by Williams... I mean, original compositions have incorporated pre-existing melodies since time immemorial.
