So my German isn't great, but from what I gathered Stéphane Denève said that Williams was so impressed by Bruno Delepelaire's playing of Elegy for Cello and Orchestra in 2021 that he penned this "brand-new arrangement" of Sayuri's Theme specially for him - and he called it the world premiere of the piece. Certainly a highlight!

Why can't they do something useful and push Disney for a release of the same score with more music, supervised by Mike? These endless OST reissues drive me nuts – one wasted opportunity after another.

It was a lovely evening! I was initially having doubts about going to the concert because I haven’t been feeling well the whole week but as it is with JW’s magic, yesterday I was feeling fit and ready to dive into the magical musical world of the great John Williams. First of all, Deneve did a great job! He did his best to keep a light-hearted atmosphere and managed to convey important anecdotes without making it too long. His conducting was energetic and the orchestra was definitely responding to it very well (especially my man the timpanist Wieland Welzel 😁). As someone mentioned already, his tempo choices were a bit different compared to JW but it didn’t seem off and that’s the beauty of a slightly different interpretation. I also feel like the orchestra had a bit more intensity under his direction, perhaps because of the instinctive response to more energetic presence and more grand physical gestures Deneve was conveying. I think this difference could clearly be heard in the Superman Theme, which was much more grand this time compared to the last Berlin concert. Loved the program! It was very well balanced and enjoyable. Somehow it felt a little shorter than last time but still a great concoction of different works. Loved “Night Journeys” from Dracula and it’s great that JW’s almost forgotten masterpieces get some spotlight. I wish they played the movie version of “Out to Sea”, which I find more enjoyable, but I understand that the concert arrangements are preferred more for performances like this. The orchestra was as usual phenomenal and compared to the last time, almost all principal players were present, which made an even bigger difference (Stefan Dohr, David Guerrier, wink wink) and I wish JW was here to experience the full potential of this magnificent orchestra. They played with full range of emotions, with rich sound and tremendous clarity in between phrases. There were a few small mistakes here and there but very very few and much less compared to the last concert in Berlin and way more less than Vienna performances. I was surprised to see 4 horns in the orchestration, instead of the usual number of 6 but it almost sounded like 6 so I only noticed it after the concert and I was surprised 😊 Loved seeing the smiles on musicians’ faces and it was clear that they were having a good time as well. Beautiful playing by Noah and Bruno in solo pieces and it must have been such an honor for Bruno to receive a new version of Sayuri’s Theme written for him by JW himself. There’s still tickets up for grabs for today’s and tomorrow’s concerts so i definitely encourage anyone to go and experience it, well, as long as you’re somewhat close to Berlin 😊

I hope this assignment was a cool glass of water for Powell after the creative desert that seems to be the HTTYD remake. Yes ,"we haven't heard it yet or seen it yet!" I'll happily reverse my opinion later. But so far I'm not hearing/seeing anything from that project that's getting me excited. But Wicked on the other hand? I think it's been a satisfying challenge for him. He seemed to love working with Schwartz's melodies. I adore Powell. But he, like all musical artists after a while, has his bag of tricks and familiar chord progressions. So trying to craft melodies that sit harmoniously with the songs, I believe, has helped him come outside his melodic comfort zone. And the ones he created blend so beautifully with Schwartz's work that they are almost indistinguishable at times. Such a perfect melding. I cannot wait for part 2!

It seems JW has still that "always in the kitchen" mentality when it comes to his music. It's too tempting not to go back and rework something, especially if he doesn't have any other pressing commitments. Makes sense he wanted to have the piece more tailored to the specific soloist here. Williams always writes for someone. Can't wait to hear the piece during the Saturday live broadcast!

Did he really botch Harry Potter? In my opinion, Desplat knocked it out of the park with his HP scores, particularly his first one! They’d rank just below the three Williams scores for me, but above the others. Very colourful and detailed orchestration, fluent melodic writing, good integration of Williams’ themes in the score (although I’ll admit they were sparingly used in Part 1). I’m not a huge Desplat aficionado particularly when he’s writing in that quirky mode of his, but his Harry Potter scores stand out to me as some of his best work.

This was beautiful. We got to hear the world premiere of Sayuri‘s Theme for Cello and Orchestra that Williams arranged for Bruno Delepelaire, who already played the Elegy in 2021! 🤭 Highlight was the SW Main Title, that’s where the orchestra gave 110%. Otherwise, the Orchestra played beautifully, especially the woodwinds, which were on fire. Horns had some flubs in Adventures on Earth, otherwise, everything was played magnificently. (Except that the Glockenspiel had timing issues on Harry‘s Wondrous World’s finale again haha) Denève’s tempos were at many places quite different from what I think Williams would have chosen, most prominently at the last bars of the SW Main Title. I think he delivered the absolute best possible result while having to deal with Yates’ sensibilities.

Boston POPS Played the "regular" Solo Cello version of Sayuri's Theme for JW Playlist last week. Keep a sharp lookout for Tanglewood Film Night though...

Exactly right. For the 1997 2-CD sets, Mike sequenced them (decided which cues would be combined together and what order everything would be presented in), and wrote the liner notes. He did not work on the audio, other people did that (listed in the booklets). It was this project (and others around the same time) that lead to him realizing that it would make more sense to learn the software and be able to work on audio in his own house, since to make these releases happen, expensive studio space was rented for the people to work on the audio there.

I am really enjoying this set. I was worried it would feel bit repetitive (some expanded Zimmer releases are) but this one flows very nicely from start to finish. I listen to this quite a lot. Karol

Catchy as hell, to be honest whether you like him or not, his Superhero scores have Catchy main themes. Very excited for this movie and score, heard great things. I've talked to some people that have seen that CCXP Action clip of this film, and apparently the music sounded great, it wasn't buried in the mix of all the noise.

Mars Needs Moms This score, which I never gave much attention to (I think I heard it once years ago...?), has been brought back by Powell fans thanks to the main theme finding its way on the new HTTYD score. @PrayodiBA posted the end credits suite on the Dragon thread, I pressed play... and I was amazed with how wonderful that track is. So of course I had to listen to the entire score. I listened to everything about 3 times, both the OST and the bootleg recording sessions. The End Titles remains the best track (I think it's a top tier Powell composition), but the rest of the score is not only great but also filled with everything I love about JP's music. So yeah... When he decided to reuse the main theme from this movie into the Dragon remake, it made me rediscover this little gem of a score. It's in the upper echelons of John Powell music.

I thoroughly enjoyed tonight’s performance- woodwind section were on fire and we were sitting in the podiumplatz so had a great view of Deneve’s enthusiasm 🤣. The cello solo for memoirs of a geisha was absolutely beautiful and the encore with violin solo moved me to tears. Like previous poster has said- the orchestra really gave their all for the SW theme. I enjoyed hearing the Dracula piece though!

Be sure to emphasize the vowels in Duel of the Fates.

I think Desplat is one of the composers working today that always has such clean and clear recordings/mixes. You can always hear so much detail in his music even if there is a lot going on.

What a night! I had the luck to attempt Vienna and Milano concerts. The Berlin one is for me the best. Vienna is impressive but the orchestra plays his own way. Milano is a bit under in term of intensity. But yeah Berlin has the "brillance" needed to play Williams with a huge energy deployed by Deneve. The double bass section (and tuba) was amazing, very powerful! A great pleasure. I found a ticket for tonight (friday) so I will double the concert. Enjoy to everyone who have the luck to be there.

Those last several bars raise my personal hopes of becoming a composer.

I've listened to it three times now. I like the theme, its catchy and fun! But this particular performance/arrangement isn't setting my world on fire. It sort of builds up for a bit and stops. I hope the full album takes the theme into more exciting directions. Like maybe this is the opening track to get you to know the theme, and then the end credits has bigger more kick-ass renditions

My brain is still trained to see 30+ FPS as a soap opera and 24fps as cinematic. Someone said of high frame rate The Hobbit: "It's like you're really there. Unfortunately 'there' is a movie set in New Zealand."

They're great! Show the range Desplat has, especially when he's not doing Oscar dramas and Wes Anderson movies.

At last we got the E.T. Symphony...extremely well performed! Organ kicked in. No clapping between movements. Hope this goes well next two nights. Caught up to episode 11 now, I can't remember another score with so much tracking and temping. Ghorman anthem aside, pretty much the only times I've noticed the score have been because its been reused from season 1/an earlier episode or it was a blatant rip off of Inception (they copied at least 4 or 5 different Inception cues). I know Roberts said in interviews before it came out that it stylistically leads into Rogue One but I haven't noticed that at all. I can't believe I'm saying this but I wish Britell scored the entire thing; I actually like season 1's score better - at least it was original.

Got a kick out of that cue, it’s fun and nice to hear an actually interesting Jurassic action cue after so long. I made some covers based on the official cover by the way, and some using the Dr. Pepper art.
