I don’t have much free time to listen to Rogan and Carolla anymore but I never miss weekly Tim Dillon episodes. I also throw on Theo Von every once in a while. He has Joaquin Phoenix this week in a rare appearance. It’s easily his best appearance of all time. He’s known for not really doing interviews or just being weird when he does do them, usually just to promote something due to presumably contractual obligation. He’s really awkward and you can tell he’s initially surprised by the fact that Theo is very genuine and he’s having an actual conversation with a guy that has no real agenda except to shoot the shit.2 points -

Without spoiling, after re-reading that Nagle thread, there's definitely at least one crucial missing detail that the first chapter reveals about Thomas Nagle that's pretty crazy! I'm already enjoying the little connections you're able to draw without putting too fine a point on it, the intro really set the table well for putting me in a "collective memory" mindset and noticing things that will reoccur, whether it's the Olympics, Symphony Hall, Buck Rogers. This is definitely gonna be a good read as a well-versed JWFan because just in reading the first 50 pages I had a bunch of moments thinking "Ohhhh I know what that means!"2 points -

Yeah, the music in all HTTYD animated movies is mixed rather poorly as a matter of facts. This live action movie is mixed better actually, I watched in IMAX. But bad mixing is something that has been plaguing John Powell's scores lately. You tell me, from these movies JP scored in the last decade, which one is mixed well: -Wicked part one (2024) -That Christmas (2024) -Thelma the Unicorn (2024) -Migration (2023) -Don't Worry Darling (2022) -The Call of The Wild (2020) -HTTYD3 (2019) -Solo A Star Wars Story (2018) -Ferdinand (2017) -Pan (2015) From that list, I recall onlt That Christmas, Migration, and Pan, that the music is mixed well, so that's only 30% Makes me wonder, is it because John Powell's music sounds "so busy" that the editor/sound mixer often bury the music way down as to not disturb the dialogue/sfx?1 point

Roy Scheider carries the movie, which looks and sounds like the original aside from some dated elements that are either nonexistent in Jaws or not as glaring. Some bad fashions and interior designs, for instance. Jaws features mostly timeless conservative fashions. I just don’t care for the teenagers in the sequel at all. I’d much rather see more Brody.1 point -

The John Barry Thread

John Barry’s musical signature is unmistakable: brassy, jazz-inflected lush strings and those hallmark cascading arpeggios shimmering beneath every motif... He revolutionized film scoring by blending jazz, blues, and classical sensibilities. Happy you "found" his signature! Every composer has one. Ok, just for fun... my current Top 10 of John Barry... I don't care for all that HDR shit. What I like about 1080p and 4K is the greater fidelity to the film source. And those 35mm scans doing the rounds? I love 'em.1 point -
Re-listening to the score and with all due respect to Laura Karpman (whose Transformation from the Captain America score is awesome), Alexandre Desplat and Michael Giacchino, who all did fine work, but Powell still wrote the best action music of the year for the climax of this movie - specifically in "Meeting the Queen", "Allied Forces" and "The Wings of the Beast". He improved on the climax of his 2010 score and added more choir and orchestral power, with awesome results. But I'm partial to Powell rocking out with the orchestra and choir1 point

Jay reacted to Knight of Ren for a topic
Sinners is my top film score of the year, and that one alongside F1 and Fantastic Four are perhaps my top 3 if we're talking about movie scores. Dragons was great but too reliant on what already worked on the animated film, and Desplat's JW is solid and fun, but not quite on the same level as the others. Outside of that, my main pick would be the score for the videogame Clair Obscur. The 8-hour album may be daunting but it's totally worth it. One of the best scores of the last couple of years for sure.1 point -
The MCU - Marvel Cinematic Universe
MaxMovieMan reacted to Yavar Moradi for a topic
It's easily my favorite superhero movie of the year, and I personally think it's one of the best MCU films since Endgame. I very much appreciated it being smaller scale and focusing on character development (for an impressive number of characters). They even managed to make Val more interesting. I can't even think of anything in the movie that bothered me, to be honest (and I actually can't say the same for many other post-Endgame MCU films that I've liked overall, such as Shang-Chi or Wakanda Forever). Taking a leaf out of Drax's book, I have decided to put myself on a low-carb/high-protein diet. I shall eat lots of meat (fresh, organic where possible, and never processed) fruits, vegetables, eggs, cheese, and beans & pulses, but I shall keep carbohydrates to a minimum. I'll see how much weight I can loose before school re-opens. Tonight, it's chicken and cheese salad.1 point -

Michael Giacchino Fantastic 4 (2025)
Stark reacted to Erik Woods for a topic
Yeah, Fantastic Four is pretty full-on, but there are many moments of delicacy, reflection, and eerie, atmospheric suspense. It does take it's time to "breathe and offer clarity." But we haven't heard this score in context so we have no idea how much of it wasn't scored and how much full-on action there is in the film. Having said that, the other scores you mentioned, when listening to them in their complete form, are not all full-on action. Cutthroat Island, for instance, gets that reputation because of the full-on first original soundtrack album release but in its complete form, it is extremely well balanced. Secret Weapons Over Normandy, however, is the outlier because, well, the entire game is dogfighting action. -Erik-1 point -
Well damn, Google Books also has a preview up with the whole intro and first chapter, and some of chapter 2, and a lot of great pics! https://books.google.com/books/about/John_Williams.html?id=P3xqEQAAQBAJ#v=onepage&q&f=false1 point

I mean that’s not how it reads and even if it was what you meant then it’s still a pretty unpleasant thing to say. No wonder child stars often turn out so fucked up when even a single picture of them can provoke such an unwarranted response. You can hate the show or whatever but he’s just a person who is still growing up doing a job. Also pretty unwarranted and unnecessary. Sorry if everyone thinks I’m turning into one of those people who provokes “you can’t say anything these days” comments but picking on a child is just wrong.1 point -
