  2. Mr Powell has been killing it this year with releases on his own private label. What’s the next expansion of his scores you hope for OTHER than the remaining two Dragons scores? Personally I’d love for an expanded X-Men: The Last Stand. Perhaps Paycheck. And The Road to El Dorado has been a personal favorite of mine since that film came out. His “Save El Dorado” cue is just a flat-out swashbuckling blast of Powell fun

  3. Here's a copy! Also, "Soundtrack!" magazine did an interview with him when The Phantom Menace came out. (But ignore his response to the Municipal Band/Emperor question -- I think he and Ford were talking past each other.)

  4. I've thought about that every time stormtroopers have appeared since season 1. There's just something off about their armor, but I can't put my finger on what. I had a similar feeling about them in Rogue One, although not as much.

  5. I'm halfway through Mank but it's not going to be one of my favorite Fincher movies, I'm afraid. It's a bit too writery and wordy. And, is it me, or is the lighting very dim? Faces are 99% of the time in the shadows.

  8. I was skeptical of the influence that the mass proliferation of pornography has had on huge segments of the population, mainly due to unprecedented internet access. That is until a friend of mine showed me some academic stats that found that the percentage of people engaging in anal sex is well into the double digits compared to decades ago. I have no idea where this study is, she showed me on her cellular telephone. But I was shocked by those findings, considering how fucking gross it is, and can easily lead to irreparable damage to the recipient. Must be a lot of sore arses out there.

  9. I fucking hate seeing those awful tattoos on so many people these days. Makes them all look like degenerates.

  10. I get that, but in the 90s, the 70s felt like ancient times. But today, supposedly we're in the late 2010s now, the 90s feel like yesterday.

  11. Road to El Dorado NEEDS to be expanded, as the OST is pretty lame and focuses only on the Elton John songs. I love the main theme, it's so swashbuckling and fun!

  13. Considering how much cool stuff happened in that episode (and the fact it looked shot mostly on location), I was really disappointed by how uninspired the direction was. When I saw the director's name come up, I was even more surprised. Expected something far more dynamic from Rodriguez. The dialogue scenes were particularly woeful, just basic shot/reverse-shot, like a soap opera.

  14. "Political" is such a broad term, and the Jay Dubya Fann bosses have never been specific in how they define it. Most folks here probably regard the term as partisan politics, left vs right, Democrats vs Republicans, etc. But that's only the superficial politics, and of course Jaycard hates that. But they also have a chip on their shoulders regarding controversy – I remember the day this rule was enacted, that big French church thingy burnt down, I made a comment criticising world leaders for donating foreign aid to rebuild the bloody thing instead of using that money to help, you know, poverty

  16. Oh wow! Thanks. That’s the most I’ve ever seen someone go into depth on that score. I just recall a lot of people thinking it was just left overs HTTYD 2, shrugging, and moving on when it originally came out. But I really enjoyed it. I think particularly in tracks like “murmurs of love and death” he started tapping into some really interesting sounds that hadn’t been heard yet (from Powell) in his larger fantasy scores. Fingers crossed we get an expanded release.

  18. I think so too. I think come 2022 the box office will be about the same as 2019 or 2018

  19. I'd buy anything he puts out, but his best scores that still have a substantial amount of unreleased music (and ignoring the fact many are available through other means...) are... The Bourne Identity The Adventures Of Pluto Nash Paycheck The Bourne Supremacy Mr. & Mrs. Smith X-Men: The Last Stand How To Train Your Dragon 2 Pan How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

  20. The other 2 Dragon scores. I know the thread says not to, but it has to be said once more just to make sure it happens, by golly! Okay FINE... did all the music to the first Shrek get released? That was the first score that brought my attention to him, despite it being a joint effort with Harry Gregson-Williams. However, I can totally feel which parts were Powell. When I first heard Narnia: Lion, Witch, Wardrobe was going to be done by Gregson-Williams, I was hoping for that sound they did in Shrek. While I like that score, I felt like it didn't have some of those quali

  21. Again, Jay and Ricard aren't against politics per se. They're against controversy.

  22. The Godfather. I watched 50 minutes of it feeling rather detached and wondering what on earth was supposed to be so good about this movie: Marlon Brando’s incessant and unintelligible mumbling or the guys killing each other because they didn’t get a part in a movie and because of a lack of interest in drugs. The main theme is good, but the music sounds way too shrill and over-remastered. For some reason I had the idea that this movie contained the love theme that actually belongs to Romeo and Juliet. AT least that would have made it interesting.

  25. I think Gonna Be A Pilot and Parting Ways are the only times Powell just re-recorded one of his demo cues with little or no alterations I think the actiony stuff he took the gist of a demo cue but then there's extra Powell-isms on top and around that But we don't really know any specifics until the demos get released one day or something, or the sheet music has precise information

  26. I'm taking no sides on the politics. The dumb politicians who are now blaming their citizens for their own terrible mismanagement of this whole affair come from all across the political spectrum and are spread across the ranks of every country. From the Cuomos to the Trumps to the Faucis to the Macrons. These political players... Were against acute/short term lockdowns when lockdowns counted. Are now enforcing chronic lockdowns at a stage in the epidemic where control is not possible and the damage to the economy and psychological well-being of the people will be more

  27. @Quintus, and @SteveMc, of course we can discuss the political fallout from COVID...in the "Politics!" thread. Lee, I do agree that to prevent JWfaners from discussing the politics of COVID in a COVID thread is "brainless", but them's the rules. Personally, I think that the whole issue of COVID has gone way beyond politics, but that's just me. Ps, I don't think that Jay is a grandfather...yet.

  33. Robert Rodriguez's latest episode is half awesome Boba Fett action, half bizarrely terrible camera work. When the Stormtroopers arrived, I thought the whole production felt like a fan film entirely by the way it was shot.

  34. The chorus singing "Laudate" (or some such thing) with the drumkit backdrop is very 60s, and I was surprised to hear it in a western setting when I first heard it, but I think it's cute! THE SECRET WAYS would probably be my second choice after STORY OF A WOMAN. His first proper, dramatic score. The film is pretty good too, a kind of THE THIRD MAN Light. I always expect "Duel of the Fates" to start up when the flute ostinato kicks in around the minute-mark in the opening credits:

  35. Rey's theme is the highlight of the whole trilogy. And while Kylo's theme can't compare with either Darth Vader's theme from Star Wars or The Imperial March it's remarkably effective. When it signaled Kylo's entrance at Disneyland's Jedi Academy you could hear people gasp. We knew who was next.
