That, had they cast MENA actors, the same people would make the opposite criticism: "Look at how they hired MENA people only to put them in roles that ridicule Muslim religious fervour (Stilgar), demonise it (pretty much all the others), fetishize them and put a white saviour at their head."

I suspect that the finale has the runtime of 2 episodes, and that's why there are 15 episodes. That album should arrive on the 3rd or 10th of May.

  4. First ever listen to El Cid (Tadlow), never seen the movie or heard anything besides highlights from it. I don't know how Rózsa did it but his 2.5 hour scores just don't feel their length, they flow well, take needed breaks from loud action and fanfares, tell a story. Of course inevitably comparisons with Ben-Hur started popping up with the references/"ripoffs" in there, and of course that one comes out on top with its massive and diverse but easily identifiable and emotionally clear theme library and perfect structure with every cue doing something with those themes for the narrative, but there's not many scores it could lose against. Cid's a bit more "film score-ey" - "hey let's put a minute of music here too" "sure I'll do some fanfare and reprise a theme" "whoops dropped it, it was just some throwaway anyway". I really love the hero themes and the love theme and their development, but on this first time couldn't latch onto others even by reading along with the booklet - but this was the first time, I'm sure they'll come. There are definitely highlights outside those main themes that stand out like Entry of the Nobles and especially the material for the twins!

  5. DRACULA (1979) Oh, wow! What a powerhouse of a score! It's true to say, dear JWfaner, that in July of '79, and coming on the heels of the superb 2-LP set of SUPERMAN, DRACULA was a bit of a letdown. Also, it's a stone cold fact that the vinyl album sounded utter shite. Not so, the new (ish) release. It really brings out hidden depths of the score, and the C&C presentation puts so much more meat on the musical bones. JW can write great soaring scores, and he can write chamber piece scores, but it's his dark, angry music that sets him apart from the rest of the herd. His work on DRACULA, THE FURY, and, to an extent, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND has almost no equal. Only Jerry's THE OMEN trilogy and Kilar's BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA, imo, compare favourably. A truly underrated work, that deserves to be heard by as many people as possible.

  7. No, we don’t seal the books with shrink wrap. It was a deliberate choice to avoid contributing to plastic waste. Which is also why we use recyclable shipping packaging. It will be ready when it’s ready. It is a 900 page manuscript and has very dense orchestrations, very laborious to engrave.

  8. So I've been listening to this release a whole lot, and thanks to the cue information in the CD booklet and Jay's amazing spreadsheet resource, I think I'm getting my head around all the cues and where they belong. I did make an interesting (I hope) observation. I noticed that all the cues which contain Barbara Bonney's vocal solos were recorded on the same day: 15th March 2001. While there's nothing uncommon about the practice of allocating the recording of certain cues requiring the presence of vocal/instrumental soloists to particular day/time, what interests me is that 15th March seems to be the very LAST day of recording sessions for the film. Additionally, 2 key cues Bonney ultimately appeared in had already been recorded at earlier sessions WITHOUT her: 7m1+2 Finding the Blue Fairy (Alternate) was recorded on 12th February, featuring a completely instrumental version of the Blue Fairy theme, and 7m5 What Is Your Wish? was recorded on 7th March, featuring full choir and no solo vocals. 8m3 End Credits (Where Dreams Are Born) and A.I. Theme No. 2 (Vocal Version) were also recorded on 15th March, and they have no earlier versions to my knowledge - Perhaps they were the last things Williams wrote once he knew he would have access to a vocalist? My question is: Was the idea to feature solo vocals as a key motific/emotional element in this score a last minute decision, one that came about only when Williams was asked/chose to revise certain cues? If anyone has any insight to share on this, I would be grateful. I love this score and it is fascinating to imagine that there might once have existed a version of it that didn't feature solo female voice, given how impactful that element of the score is in the finale of the film.

  9. Confusingly, I believe the film and Demaster actually present the cue as it was recorded. The OST tracked music from elsewhere in the cue (or possible another cue, I forget) to replace it.

  10. On the topic of The Phantom Menace 2018 Demaster, there are several incorrect takes that plague that release. Duel of the Fates is far and away (see what I did there) Williams' most popular track on Spotify, and the 2018 release includes a portion of a take which is different to the original 1999 OST at 2:55 (listen to the trumpet/s): This segment with the ascending trumpet as heard on the 2018 Demaster was actually used in the film, and hence appears on this track from the Ultimate Edition release at 0:18: BTW this is such a great thread and I'm learning new things already! Excited to uncover all these little details, and HOPEFULLY one day we will get definitive, complete releases for these incredible scores. Please, oh, please release them before the collapse of the Australian economy!

Hey, I mean I'm MENA of a sort... To me, all the Arabic and Farsi terms are mostly just a little... I don't want to say "silly" but just something one has to try and get used to and look past, because its pretty funny to see Herbert (and, by extension, Denis) use these terms which I'm sure read as very exotic-sounding to him...while to me at least some of them could crop-up in daily conversation... "Usul" and "Mahdi" are pretty commonplace Arabic words... "Kwizats Haderach" is a kind of bastardised Hebrew for saying "hopping." It all gets pretty hokey...

  15. Wouldn't it be dope if Mike Matessino was at one of these concerts (basically the only ones JW attends) and they had him come out before a cue and explain the process of putting together an unreleased cue and then JW plays the cue/deep cut that is only available on an expansion. I think it would be great way to market the amazing work that goes into these expansions and to show casual people there's so much more than 'throne room/end titles' I know Dreyfuss has done this with a Jaws cue and Spielberg for E.T. Idk just a thought.

  18. Decided to start a thread to list all of these since I've started documenting them. There are a surprising number of these available to the public. From ANH, everyone knows about takes 16-20 of 1m2 Star Wars on the 1997 set, and the alternate takes throughout the 1993 album are pretty well known as well (though not necessarily documented). But I was surprised to find that the 1997 and 2018 albums actually have alternate takes too! Here's a few that I've found already: 1M3 The War has an alternate take on the 1993 set from 2:15-2:58, the 1997/2018 sets have the correct one. 2M3 The Little People has an alternate take in a couple spots. The 1993 and 1997 sets both have the wrong take from 3:12-3:16, where the 2018 has the right one. However, the 1993 and 2018 sets have the wrong take for the ending Imperial statement, where the 1997 set has the correct one. 2M5 More Little People has an alternate mix for 1:25-end on the 1993 and 1997 sets, where the 2018 has the correct mix. I thought this was a different take originally but @Manakin Skywalker noticed that the 1997 and 2018 versions do indeed phase, so it must be a different mix and not a different take. I'll keep updating this thread as I find more. Feel free to include ones from other Star Wars scores, they don't have to just be ANH

  23. Gaining the ability to discern incorrect takes, without having the ability to properly correct them from the source, isn't as fun as it sounds. If you can't tell them apart, then you're free to enjoy the score through whichever version of any given track you like the most.

  25. "CHARLES AZNAVOUR - THE COMPLETE WORK" (release: May 10, 2024) 1948-2015 A life, a legacy, in 100 CDs Charles Aznavour is primarily celebrated for his exceptional success in France, where he became a true icon of French chanson. His iconic songs such as "La Bohème," "Emmenez-moi," and "Hier encore" have left an indelible mark on entire generations and remain essentials of Francophone music. But beyond his national triumphs, Aznavour also conquered the world with his multilingual talent and diverse repertoire. With numerous albums released in English, Italian, Spanish, and German, he touched international audiences and gained global recognition, making him one of the most universally beloved artists of his time. On May 10th, Universal Music will release a historic 100-CD box set to celebrate Charles Aznavour's centennial. This box set, comprising over 1,800 tracks, will gather Aznavour's complete studio and live albums, along with rarities and many unreleased tracks. It will also mark the first CD edition of most of Aznavour's foreign albums, including a Spanish Christmas album recorded in 1996 and an English album titled "I Will Warm Your Heart," recorded in 1975 with Del Newman, which have never been released before. These albums are now ready to be discovered and appreciated by a new audience. The Spanish Christmas album, recorded on June 28, 1996, was likely set aside to not overshadow the release of "Cuando estás junto a mi," intended for the Spanish market that same year. As for "I Will Warm Your Heart," it consists of 12 tracks recorded primarily during a session with Del Newman on March 5, 1975, offering a unique jam session ambiance. Despite its recording, this album never saw the light of day, making way for the releases of "I Sing For... You" and "Hier... encore" later that year. The album was mixed from the multitracks at Tonehouse studio in Paris in May 2023, making it Charles Aznavour's 92nd and final studio album. On October 1, 2018, at the age of 94, Charles Aznavour passed away at his second home in Mouriès, Bouches-du-Rhône, which he had built in the 1990s. For about ten years, he cultivated olive trees and produced olive oil that he marketed. His death was caused by acute pulmonary edema, leading to cardiorespiratory failure. Standing at just over five feet tall, Charles Aznavour was the last "grand" figure of French chanson, of which he was an ambassador worldwide. "He's the pope, he's God the father of song," recounted presenter Monique Giroux, testifying to the immense impact and admiration the artist elicited. His passing sparked deep emotions in France and around the world, leaving behind an invaluable musical legacy. 29. It is a slightly odd choice I would agree, kinda feels like he should be the one man-spreading in the Captain's chair rather than the Anson Mount's Pike. Is it me or is Georgiou oddly prominent? A nice lot of Spocks though and they really do look like they could all be the same person. I assume Travis and Malcolm are posing for their prom date... although surely that should be Chief O'Brien and Dr Bashir. Speaking of which, I cannot for the life of me see the good Doctor. If someone could point him out, that would be great. Anyone else obviously missing?

  31. That's a strawman. If the characters are properly represented in the film, but the material contains racist stereotypes, then the issue is with the materiel, not the film adapting it. That is what "they" would criticize. It would be an ignorant reviewer indeed who would lob accusations of the White Savior trope at a series so clearly criticizing it, but I don't argue with hypothetical "thems," and I see nothing in this article to disagree with.

  33. No, not exactly. It is as I list it, but the "Carrier Takeoffs and Landings" sounds like "Danger Zone" because in the film it has vocals that are missing on the CD. I went through the film yesterday to confirm my playlist. 1-2, 1-4 and 1-14 all have Kenny Loggins vocals at some place or another. 1-10 has humming throughout that's missing - which makes it a completely different piece of music than what we hear right now. 1-11 has Terri Nunn vocals. That's why the whole "Love Theme" section on disc 1 right now sounds so long and tedious - because they stripped it of all variation.

Hey! Why aren't you tying these Fremen who are obviously based on Middle Eastern cultures more closely to their influences? Well, you know at the end of the movie they wage a holy war across the known universe driven by a fanatical faith in a messiah and are the most feared slaughterers in the history of the universe? Oh. So... Can we keep them just kind of generically "foreign / non-white"? Is that OK? That Zendaya lady, she could fit that, right?

Great choreograhpy and animation. I'm impressed by the animation each episode, it's just so inctedibly good. If you compare this to the Clone Wars film, it's remarkable! There was also some really great music in here. The statement of the bad batch theme during the fight was great and there were some really beautiful moments with Ventress & Omega. Next week 2 episodes! Let's see how quick the story is gonna move

    Villeneuve's DUNE

Legendary and WBD’s Dune Part Two earned another $17.6 million (-38%) despite losing its Imax and most of its PLF screens to the Ghostbusters sequel. Yeah, Dune 2 did fine this weekend (it has earned $124 million worldwide in Imax thus far, their eighth-biggest title ever), but once Godzilla X Kong arrives, that’s bad news for Legendary and WBD. Oh… wait… Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi sequel has now doubled the $108 million lifetime cume of Dune and passed the $219 million total of Wonka. With another $31 million earned overseas, it has now earned $575 million worldwide. It should finish with over/under $680 million worldwide on a $190 million budget. 43. I haven't listened to all Jerry Goldsmith, though a while ago I did go through a bunch of 15 minute suites of his scores on Youtube. But I'm still not that familiar with his Star Trek work, for example (in fact I'm listening to it now ) That said, my favourite so far is Total Recall. Someone who doesn't know anything about music might dismiss it as a silly action score, and in a way it is silly, but on closer inspection it reveals amazing artistry. And it's an enjoyable listen from start to finish. It's so hard to choose with Goldsmith, though, because all of his works are so diverse. With Williams, even though he has also written in different genres, I feel that you can always pick out a single internal language in his soundtrack work. With Goldsmith it's not so obvious, and he's better at being more chameleon-like. But then I've listened to far more Williams than Goldsmith, so that might just be a bias of mine. EDIT: Just finished listening to The Enterprise for the first time. As if I needed any more confirmation that Goldsmith is a genius! Brilliant track, almost a perfect encapsulation of epic/heroic musical tropes of that time (not in a bad way). Lots of Debussy influences.

  44. Just listening to Desplat's "Deathly Hallows Pt. 1". And when you got over the fact, that this is not on a level with the Williams HP scores and that the score has hardly something that you could call "themes" like there are so many in Williams' HP scores, then this is really a good moody listen. A lot of ostinato, a lot of drama and emotion. I am already happy listening to a Desplat score, that I can enjoy musically.

  45. I read they decided to do two Film Nights with the exact same program in the hopes of alleviating the congestion that occurred last year. Let's hope that's the case and nobody's stuck in their car for the first half of the show!

  46. He definitely made the message more obvious. I think part of the reason it worked so well in the books is because it really is a complete heel-turn. You go from the heroic ending of the first book to the complete tragedy in the beginning of the second. Paul isn’t as twisted in the book as he is in the movie. Herbert essentially wrote Messiah to make the point he was trying to make clearer. He felt he didn’t do a good enough job. So that’s probably why Denis made it more obvious that Paul is turning into a sinister character. The third movie won’t have as much of the shock value that the books had I don’t think but I still believe that Denis really knows what he’s doing. He has a plan.

  47. Zimmer will have a lot of time to come up with ideas for the third film considering Denis probably won’t make this for another five years or so. I’m honestly so excited for this film. More than I was for the first two movies. The second Dune book is where the message of the series truly comes into view.

  48. I love this show so fucking much and I think what I love the most is the music -the songs are great but the orchestral score is so unnecessarily dramatic, I can't help but adore it! This is straight out of a suspense film:

  49. I'm am simultaneously surprised at how much of an instant buy grail this was for me AND how much I'm enjoying it. This was probably on my "must buy" list because I've wanted the opening credits for nearly 40 years and because I had asked for it for so long it felt it would have been rude not to. This falls into my "used to have the movie audio on tape just to hear the music" category. Also I usually figure if I have any kind of an unmentionable that I ever listened to with any regularity that the bill is due. I knew from the film and even a cursory examination of the track list that this was going to have a lot of instrumentals of the songs from the songtrack. How much Danger Zone could I handle? Turns out? A LOT. The various mixes and variations of all of the songs are terrific. And I was very surprised in a couple of cases I knew the exact moment of the film that this scored. (I saw this movie a LOT in 1986.) Mighty Wings also gets a great showing. The only place where the album bogs down (and this is just due to the nature of ordering by film order I would suppose) is when we get three instrumentals of Take My Breath Away for almost eight minutes. I think I need to find my favorite and lose the other two for a playlist. Then there's the "original" Faltermeyer tracks. I love them. Those opening notes of Two Migs, Not One go straight to part of my brain. The heroic / nostalgia setting of the Anthem in Viper's House and Carrier Ready Room and Takeoffs is delightful. And every time that drum machine from the opening starts up I'm ready to do pre-flight checks. It's also nice to have the expanded original program. This album is iconic. I haven't listened to most of it in forever. This got a lot of play in high school. I used to like Destination Unknown a lot. If you have even a passing interest in the film, the music, or Faltermeyer, then this is a good buy. Unrelated story: We went to go see Iron Eagle in early 1986 and they showed the trailer for Top Gun. I knew that THIS was the jet movie that I really wanted to see. Kind of like when I went to go see Legend and they showed Labyrinth. And both times the trailers had the better movie.
