But that is, I guess, just my paranoia speaking.
Welcome to my world dude!

but Passion was just about the most overrated and underwhelming score
Yeah I know. And sometimes so inappropriate. Still I am afraid this score will win based on arguments given earlier in this thread. Here's my list of Williams' scores that really should have won:
1978 Superman.
Midnight Express? Come on! That score is so forgotten already!
1980 The Empire Strikes Back
Fame? What an upset! The greatest sequel score in history and it loses to....Michael Gore's Fame....
1981 Raiders of the Lost Ark
Chariots of Fire has an AMAZING main theme, as good as anything in Williams' Raiders score, but Vangelis' score as a whole is shallow and quite lame.
1989 Born On The Fourth Of July
The SONGS from The Little Mermaid made the music shine, but the score is just nice. I like the Main Title music, the fanfare, the jig, but most of it doesn't really stick (Beauty and the Beast being far superior). The score from BOT4OJ however is one of the strongest scores of the '80's; highly underrated.
That's it really. The rest of Williams' losses, in all fairness, I can live with. Maybe Empire Of The Sun should have won.

Star Wars music is a LOT more well known then Harry Potter music will ever be.
I think Josh is refering to today's audience. I notice it with the kids in my school; they really ALL know Hedwig's Theme! Whenever I play in on the piano in my class children from all over the school run into my classroom because they want to listen to "Harry Potter muziek".
Star Wars nowadays, on youngsters, doesn't have that affect anymore.
Just an observation.

And Stefan,
Ofcourse I don't think you're ignorrant. It's just that a few posts back you really gave the impression that the ...... (keeping my promise!) with remarks like ".....and how that for some reason means...." isn't really your cup of tea.
I know the sentence above is among the weirdest constructed in the English language I hope you know what I mean.
In no way did I mean to insult you man!

After all, everybody knows the music from Harry Potter. Who can hum the music from Passion or the Village?
Isn't that a little like saying: "Hey everyone knows Eminem! So Eminem will win an Academy Award!"
Oops! Wait a minute...
Eminem DID win an Academy Award, right?
Isn't it than like saying: "Hey everyone liked Titanic! Let's give that one the award!"
Wait another GDM! Titanic also won, right?
Josh you are a GENIUS! I hope you're right ofcourse!

So if the films central message (depecting the suffing of Christ, and how that for some reason means the human race is in debt to him) is lost on me, only the violence remains.
That's true. If you don't understand the meaning of his death than the suffering and violence seem so meaningless and the whole film functions more or less as an exploitation film. Then you made a wise decision. Without some background knowledge concerning God's purpose behind it all the film almost seems unneedfully evil and pointless.
This was my last comment on The Passion. Promise!
Does anyone think that the deaths of Goldsmith and Bernstein has had an affect on the voting for the best score category? I mean these giants of film music have been overlooked severly during their careers and although the Academy has been kind to Williams in the past, the years since Schindler's List have been somewhat cold. So many nominations - more than most composers would recieve during their lifetimes! - but no award... What do you think?
-
The depection of horrific torture only for the sake of just showing a lot of blood and violence...
Considering Gibson's background I sincerely believe that he made this film with the best of intentions and that his heart was definately in the right place. Therefore I don't agree with your ...only for the sake of.... statement.

one thing is for sure, just say no to Ashlee Simpson, an almost pretty talentless bimbo, whose claim to fame is that see can't sing.
Haha! I also HATE Ashlee Simpson! Saw her show once on MTV and it literally made me sick. How a person can be so dull and uninspiring and STILL demand so much attention from others without shame is truly beyond me!

mostly based on the visions of a 18th century nun
I don't want to turn this thread into some kind of religious flame-war (against the rules right?), but the Bible is never as detailed about the tortures as Gibson's film is. Gibson obviousley HAD to base a lot of his material on those visions because, for instance, the Bible states in only one of the Gospels that Jesus was scourged, but it never describes how severe, how long or with what kind of whips; just that they scourged him. Also when they pull Jesus' arm out on the cross; that's also not in the Bible.
So for me as a film I find it powerful and stunning, but as an accurate retelling of the last days of Jesus based on the accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John it is in parts highly speculative.
Ok, let's end The Passion discussion guys. Please. For some of us religion is very personal and already stirred up some controversy on this board in the past. I guess people come to the general discussion area to discuss John Williams, film music and such. And to be honest so do I.
-
But, honestly, even with it's extreme portayal of human suffering I still thought the film was very good. There were so many moments I was genuinely moved by the experience.

Ok, first about Zimmer's As Good As It Gets and Williams' Dinner With Amelia...
Back in 1987 George Michael was being law-suited by some guy who claimed Michael had stolen the chords from one of his songs for Last Christmas. Michael went to court and provided the jury 27 other examples of various songs that also used the same standard chord progression. They favored in Michael's case. Ofcourse.
Zimmer did not invent As Good As It Gets! Listen more to the works of Morricone, Bacalov, Piovani, Lai or other European composers and you'll know why. Williams clearly wrote a lot of The Terminal score in European mode and therefor 'that sound' is also there. But I consider Dinner With Amelia to be a totally original composition with some stylitics owed to a long lasting (waaaaaayyyy before As Good As It Gets) European tradition.
There you have it.
OK, now onto the Oscar nominations.
Yes, Williams has a big change of winning but so do some of the other nominees.
John Debney, The Passion of the Christ
Could this be the Oscar's way of acknowledging The Passion? The film has been popular in some religious circles (especially in the US) and although that should be NO basis for voting for this work, with the Academy it's always weird. I have a strange feeling this score will win. Not because it's the best, but because the Academy feels they must award this film at least in some way.
Jan A.P. Kaczmarek, Finding Neverland
Ah, there's the weird, strange name among the bunch. The Academy LOVES weird strange names to award. Could this be the winner then?
Thomas Newman, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events
The Academy's way of honoring the Newman family?
James Newton Howard, The Village
Howard is quite older than most think! He's not a newcomer in the field of film music and perhaps the Academy feels they must show their respect to a veteran in the industry.
John Williams, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Yes, yes. I HOPE this one will win!!!!

Isn't it that the guys who make these one-sheets only ASSUME Williams will score War Of The Worlds? I mean what do they know really? Think about it.
Bla, bla, bla...
Ok, I'll stop my paranoid behaviour now. Believe me; no one is more happy about that poster than me! I'm totally convinced Williams WILL score War Of The Worlds and I'll spend the rest of this day in shame
Sorry for all the controversy I've caused in this thread.
But...
....there is always Memoirs Of A Geisha!

-
Wow....so what scored turned you into a fan? The Towering Inferno? The Sugarland Express?
-
Yeah, I know. But Jerry hasn't had the influence on my life like John has. I have been following John's career for almost 15 years now and that's half of my life! It's going to be difficult for me. I know that.
-
you know if John never scored another picture, the world would still go on.
Yeah, such a remark seperates the real fans from those who have lost their emotional attachment to the Williams phenomenon.
I guess that makes me sound nerdy, geeky, I don't know. I don't care anyway.
I would be really affected if Williams would stop scoring. I'm not ashamed to admit that. Waiting for the "next score", reading all the developments on the Net is almost as much fun for me as listening to his new work.
-
Woohoo!!!! I made a difference!!!
Yesterday I called the Gorfaine/Schwartz agency to inform about Williams' War Of The Worlds and Memoirs Of A Geisha involvment. The nice lady I spoke to was quite helpful and promised to confirm whether Williams is assigned to both projects. I informed her of the inconsistancy of the information on the main page (www.gsamusic.com) and their composer pdf.file. War Of The Worlds WAS mentioned on the main page, but not in pdf-file's discography.
I just checked and see for yourself:
http://www.gsamusic.com/Composers/WLLMS-JN.pdf
Look on page 7: War Of The Worlds IS included now and Memoirs Of A Geisha is still there.
Although I'm not fully convinced (considering me being "paranoid to a pathological level") and I'm still scared shit (obviously for the same reason) I am getting more convinced that Williams will score both films in the end.
-
look mister 3rd rate beer, this isn't a flamebaiting so deal with it. Its an uninspired effort. Better than I used to think, but nowhere near worthy of the praise some of you foam at the mouth about.
Wooo....this is NOT the Joe I remember!! You ok?
And....TLC IS the worst of the Jones-trilogy and I even agree with some of your statements, but I still like the film. And what's wrong with the score? It's a great score with a truly emotional core.
-
FYI, John Williams is NOT off this picture. I just got this confirmed from the publicist at Sony/Columbia, Peggy Mulloy.
mikael @ music from the movies
That's good information! Although I don't really value the opinion of publicists, I value it more than the opinion of weird geeks who posts unfounded statements in spanish forums.
Does anyone know the complete story behind The Hulk? I was thinking; maybe Memoirs is another Hulk. I know Williams was at one time being considered by "official" sources as the composer, but Danny Elfman turned out to be the composer, after both Williams and ... (the composer of The Sweet Hereafter... what's his name again?) had turned it down. Or something like that.
Who knows what happened?
-
I never meant seriously that Hans Zimmer would score War Of The Worlds. I have however always been serious about Williams not being able to score War Of The Worlds, because of his work on Revenge Of The Sith which would assign another composer to score War. It COULD be Zimmer, but if it's going to be Horner or Elfman I wouldn't be surprised.
-
Steven, that is one very fine point you brought in: the production of Vengeance! This could SERIOUSLY jeopardize Williams' involvment with Memoirs. My reasoning is that Williams will NOT be able to score War Of The Worlds, because of his work on Revenge Of The Sith. Spielberg wants to release Vengeance in December, the same month Memoirs is planned for release. That would present yet ANOTHER conflicting schedule to provide old pal Spielberg a score. My thoughts are that Williams backed out of Memoirs himself to be able to score Vengeance.

From the original FSM thread:
According a spanish forum John Williams was fire from Memoirs of Geisha, according it Mr Williams and the director of the filme had a lot of divergencesOk, the poster is a guy or gal called adilson, a junior member meaning a short or limited post-record. He speaks of 'a spanish forum'. Sounds a little vague don't you think? What is that forum then? So this guy is actually restating things that supposedly have been said on 'a spanish forum' by some other, unknown, guy.
Reminds me of something I did years ago. I made a fan CD cover for Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone with, made up ofcourse, track titles. A few days later those MADE UP tracktitles appeared on a Harry Potter fan site presented as FACTUAL titles.
Isn't that how it goes with messageboards and all?
But I AM scared shit because Williams is no longer credited at the IMDb.
-
There you go boy!Now I'm depressed. -
Oh no! My dream year 2005 is falling apart piece by piece. There may be some truth to this: check out the IMDB. Williams is no longer credited for Memoirs of a Geisha. I will not believe this is based on a rumor started on a spanish forum. There MUST be some truth to this. And although I don't trust the IMDB fully why would they change this? Williams is also no longer credited for Sub-Mariner. Is there something going on we don't know about (yet). Williams health? The increasing popularity of Hans Zimmer? I'm worried...

Hey! You're refering to my most succesful topic-starter on this board (or to some hot action between the sheets?)! In fact; it was the largest thread ever until you created that abomination of a thread concerning Potterdom or whatever!
