  1. English subs in an English language movie? That would distract me terribly.

I get distracted now when i watch an English film with Greek subtitles!

Since I understand both languages, it's like getting in my head two languages simultaneously and my brain gets confused! :biglaugh:

but reading English subtitles while watching an English movie is no problem, and it enhances my experience.

But yeah, I guess if I watched a Greek film with Greek subtitles it would distract me too.

Also, i don't understand why in some European countries, they dub everything!!

    That is sacrilege!

I always prefer to listen to the original language.

I have that with cartoons too. I mean i see many people now who have grown up with Greek dubs in animation films or series and they prefer and love that, but I want to hear the original (even if I grew up with the dub)

i was very angry when i went to the cinema to see "Hunchback of notre dame" and it was in Greek dub!

and moreover, I knew that something may go wrong, and i specifically asked the cashier if the film has Greek subtitles.

But apparently, she confused subs with dub.

  2. I grew up with subs. reading and watching the film is second nature to me.

    Me too!

And it seems so peculiar to me when i read in surveys etc. that Americans don't like subtitles, and they always fear in the industry there about foreign films in the box office.

  3. The Charge of the Light Brigade

I think it's one of the lesser Flynn/DeHavilland films... some of the dialogue scenes I found myself nodding off, but the film is rousing during its battle sequences. The production values are splendid and still hold up, and amply supported by Max Steiner's wonderful score.

Oh, i saw this recently too. And i agree.

I found They died with their boots on much better, and of course The Adventures of Robin Hood.

  4. -I bought the 22 film James Bond collection, even though I had only seen about 8 of the films prior.

-I bought Ponyo before I saw it, but I knew I'd love it as I love all of Miyazaki's movies

Oh, i want to buy the Bond too!! But i'm waiting until i have some money.

And all the Ghibli blurays, the japan version, in which i love the packaging! :biglaugh: (although it's very EXPENSIVE!)

  5. My most recent blind buy, which I haven't received yet, is this:

    69545_large.jpg

But from the looks of it, I think i'm not gonna be disappointed again.

If i buy films that i haven't seen, they're always in a genre that I love.

(So, I'll probably never blind buy a comedy, a horror, a sports film or a western. :biglaugh: )

  6. Is A River Runs Through It a good movie?

oh, did you see my post here? i watched it yesterday!

    http://www.jwfan.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=20559&p=915834

I guess it's not a film for everyone and I wouldn't suggest a blind buy, although I loved the film.

The quality of the picture is excellent!

Oh I'd never buy a film I've never seen before, I can just rent it very easily from netflix, the library, redbox, whatever. I'll check it out, my GF might like it too. Looks like it has a young Joseph Gordon Levitt!

yes, but only for few scenes in the beginning.

So, really, you haven't ever bought a movie that you haven't seen?

I did it twice, and thankfully i wasn't disappointed.

(also if we count films that I had seen in my childhood and didn't remember anything, i may have done it 4 times)

  7. B&N Criterion Sale has started!! :) (up until July 29th)

    50% off in Criterion BLurays.

    My purchases will be:

    Charade

Badlands (although I haven't seen it but I love Malick)

The lady Vanishes or On the Waterfront (If i can afford any of them)

  8. well there are two versions of Aliens 3 for you to view. The effects are just atrocious. Still no disc set provides more about the films. It's got so many great documentaries on the making of all 4 films. You will be pleased, except for the packaging which while I love the looks I fear for the discs each time you take them out.

I already of course own the DVD anthology box which has the same extras (I think?).

But anyway, I don't think I had seen them back then. I don't find the time. I want to watch so many films.

The only extras I have watched on their entirety are those of the E.T. Bluray.

And i think of the Indiana Jones DVD box set.

There are a couple of new ones in the Bluray though.

  9. he may read it better than he hears it.

    that! :)

I will buy it nonetheless (i can also download english subtitles from the net and watch the blurays on the fly with them), but it's just that i'd prefer they would be already included.

    edit:

ok, I just bought it along with the Braveheart 2 disc steelbook (which is one of my favourite films) (i was keeping the money for B&N Criterion sale :()

Wow! look at that screenshot comparison:

    http://caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleiche/index.php?art=full&image=12&vergleich=braveheart&action=1&lossless=0#vergleich

    I LOVE Blu-rays!

off topic mode on: I still have fond memories of Aliens (don't we have a nostalgia emoticon here?).

i caught it in my childhood on a local TV station in my hometown from 2nd-3rd minute and on, and I watched it until the end. I didn't know what it was its title!

I was very impressed by it!

Then I saw Alien 3 at the cinema (I LOVED that too! I don't understand why people don't like it), and I think after that I saw the original Alien.

  10. Right, but now you have access to the cues recorded for the film AND the concert arrangements. So why can't you enjoy both now?

because as I've said I was negative from the start, and rarely I will change my mind for something like this.

And I always prefer the film versions in soundtracks. I don't like the "album-notion". as I wouldn't like eg. a concert arrangement of the last movement of Beethoven's 9th symphony.

Anyway, I don't say they're bad, it's just that i rarely will listen to them (if not never) since we have the film versions now.

i guess I'm something like the opposite of Thor?

  11. I'm afraid all releases (and the European ones) have only hearing impaired subtitltes.

And in these films - that rely much on sound - it will be extremely annoying. :(

(eg. [sound of alien approaching], [man screaming], [slimy sound of alien's saliva dripping] :biglaugh: )

  12. Wait - you don't like the concert arrangements Williams recorded for the original ET LP? Why in the world not? It's some of his most beautiful work!

Well, I loved the film, and when I got this cd I waited to hear the film versions, and when I heard that this was not the case I was dissapointed.. :(

So, I was negative about them from the start.

(I especially dislike the introduction to "Flying")

  13. 4 pages about this and hardly a single word about the music itself.

If anything, these reissues and expansions are a golden opportunity to delve into the details of the music (whether in context with the film or alone) once more.

What's everyone's take on the MUSICAL CONTENTS of this score?

Bah, It's just a complete and chronological film version of the score different from the re-recordings on the OST. Are you interested in knowing more? ;)

Yeah, preferably something about the music itself.

I guess I have to wait untill people get it untill we can discuss that. I didn't realize we did separate threads about the musical contents.

Well, the film versions of the cues (i assume) are different than the rerecordings.

I mean listening to the maint tiles alone, the music is different.

So, I'll have to get this set to have a complete image of the music.

(eg. I don't like very much the re-recordings/arrangements of the original E.T. album [although most people do], but i love the film versions which were released in the following cds)

other than that, i would say that the music as I heard it in the original cd, is good. it's not something I'm crazy about, neither the style, but it shows that it is skillfully composed music, even for such a small group of instruments.

I had seen the film some years ago, don't remember it much, but i remember that it was weird.

i'm not a fan of this genre either, so my opinion wouldn't be impartial.

  14. Great deal! Probably the best Blu Ray set I own. Complete worth $20 even if you are just buying it for the first two films.

I have to ask a favour Jason or anyone else that owns this set.

Do you remember if the films have plain English subtitles too besides English for hearing impaired?

(usually Bluray.com and the back covers have incomplete information)

  15. Well, surely many own the Rykodisc already -- or have seen the film -- so they have some connection to the music? Or is this release the first experience for most people?

Well I thought this thread is for the particular release. I'm sure (?) there would be another thread that discusses the music in general.

Anyway, in case anyone is interested I had made a 2 staves transcription of the Main titles theme (film version).

If you try to play it at the piano, you must use the pedal in appropriate places, and also use your hands at will for easier playing. (meaning moving the chords on the right hand etc.)

If anything, these reissues and expansions are a golden opportunity to delve into the details of the music (whether in context with the film or alone) once more.

What's everyone's take on the MUSICAL CONTENTS of this score?

Thor nobody has it yet. We will probably have it in a month or so? I am not sure..

  17. I just watched "A River Runs through it".

    Wow!

I had seen it again in my teens and I think I was a bit bored.

    Now I loved it!

    A simple nostalgic film.

During the film i had the hunch that this is a real story, and indeed it was! The story of a writer and scholar, Norman Maclean.

While I found Isham's Oscar nominated score charming - though discreet, I wondered what wonders would have Williams done with this film!
