  1. Definitely option 3. It's cool to revisit all the familiar themes, but hearing them in a new way keeps things fresh. JNH does this a lot. Several of his End Title pieces contain either completely new material sandwiched in between stuff from the movie, or rerecordings/ alternate /film takes of existing themes. Many others are clearly specifically recorded pieces. He also seems to be releasing more of them on CD (I know I'm gushing, but I've made no secret of how well made I think most JNH albums are).
  2. Joe, truer words have never been spoken so well. God bless you! Joe: line 1 - perfectly valid line 2: bullsh!t I vote for Horner because he clearly is better trained than Zimmer, and his best stuff really gets to you. Zimmer's best stuff to me is merely very good, but it rarely gets under my skin like Horner.
  3. I'm going to have to disagree with the following being disappointing: Hancock - I love this score. In fact the final 5 tracks (Hollywood Blvd ->) are getting so many plays right now and I was really annoyed to find that first track completely hacked up in the movie. The Happening - I agree that it's probably the weakest of their collaboration but I still enjoy most of it. Indiana Jones 4 - I was disappointed by it, and still find half the album dull, but it's still a decent work - just standard Williams fare. Journey to the Center of the Earth - I like about half the album. There's some stunning work in 'Building the Raft' and 'Storm'. The Mummy 3 - I'm bothered continually by Edelman's synth padding, but I do love the themes, and most of the more incidental music I find very beautiful. WALL-E - I agree not his best, but I love the main theme and it worked wonderfully in the film X-Files 2 - Minimalist but some good parts To call DK disappointing... well, I had low expectations, and even those fell through the floor when I heard it. I like 3 tracks, and that's after watching the movie.
  4. I don't know enough Vangelis to make this comparison. Besides, the one score for which I know he used an orchestra, he had to get one of those guys who conducts the Prague PO to do all the 'real' orchestrations.
  5. Agreed about the phoenix theme - such an epic and hummable theme. CE3K is one of the millions of movies I haven't seen for years, and almost certainly not in their complete form. I would say the list could be embarassing, but not after a certain admission of not having heard any of the Indy trilogy...
  6. Why don't he and Lucas just retire. That way we'll never run the risk of being subjected to a Zimmer-Spielberg score *shudders*.
  7. Well I didn't see the movie because I suspected that reason. I didn't like the first one much either.
  8. That's the guy who conducted at the one and only film music concert I've ever been to. Why do these damn composers never come to our lonely little island?
  9. You mean wouldn't... I didn't buy Caspian, but that's only because it's much darker and has passages that really aren't particularly interesting, I suspect, unless you've seen the movie.
  10. Sounds good. I should be able to make it, although it will depend on timings with work & getting up to London. Plus, I've never met anyone on this board yet which is a disgrace considering how much time I spend on here.
  11. A Shrek 2 pleb: http://www.amazon.com/review/R32M11ZEDZNWA...=cm_cr_rdp_perm I'm not as keen on this score, and yes, there are a few reused passages, but come on...
  12. Actually, you're right - this Amazon guy is so good he had me convinced! Now I come to think of it, there are several Goldsmith scores I don't like much due to the use of synth... Hollow Man for example.
  13. A somewhat odd, although completely true observation... what does this guy not like about a real orchestra? But it's the MI:2 one that takes the biscuit. Music fans like this need to be strapped into the machine the kid from Lost was found in, and subject to random JW music 24/7.
  14. Like those comments saying 'warning: this CD doesn't contain the actual songs used in the movie, just the classical incidental stuff' *THWAAAPPPPP* Edit - talk of the devil... (referring to the Shrek score CD)
  15. What a twat. As far as I'm concerned, the only time synths should be used are if the budget doesn't allow or the film doesn't call for it - an example being Erin Brockovich, which Clemmenson at Filmtracks absolutely blasts, but the film had an intimacy and character orientation that just didn't call for anything more than synths, with the majority of the film being unscored anyway. Air Force One flippin' well calls for a real pulsating orchestra, not a Zimmer wall of sound.
  16. I hope to see The Godfather on the big screen in a few months - our cinema is having a free season of classic movies. The thing I will say now though, is that all this stuff about Dark Knight overtaking it is just stupid. Partly because of all the comments above about trying to quantify the 'greatest movie', but also because it wasn't that good. I think IMDB has a problem with Batman fanboys, because no way in hell does this movie deserve a 9.x rating. Shawshank - now there's a movie I can watch over and over and blows me away every time. Not the 'greatest', but again, among them.
  17. Hancock. While it started off a little shaky, it got a little better and I enjoyed it. Obvious that so much stuff was cut out though, as several of Powell's cues were Lucas-ized.
  18. I recommend A.I. Much of Minority Report is boring to me, and those 5 or 6 cues that I do like don't get a lot of playtime. Both are slightly darker scores, but I'd argue that A.I. is more upbeat and has far less background dissonance.
  19. $3? Are you serious? A ticket at my local multiplex (the one where I have an unlimited card) is about £7. A popcorn though, even a small one, will set you back half that again. I never drink during a movie, but I'd imagine that would push it up to good £12-13, or what, $25? Food at the cinema is a complete joke, but of course it's their main source of revenue. For the price of a medium bag of popcorn, I could buy 6 similar sized microwave bags from the supermarket.
  20. Wow. Just one of those things you don't see coming. I haven't seen much of his work, but he was really good in the Ocean movies. RIP.
  21. Indeed. In Raiders, this is like the most important discovery of mankind, ToD they have a village of children to save, in LC Indy has to save his Father. There's nothing like that in KotCS. Maybe trying to keep Irina off their backs, but that's hardly difficult.
  22. Torchwood just got released as a digital download. One of the few TV soundtracks where the cue selection seems quite good, although it's more serious than Doctor Who, and therefore much less fun. And I'd have crucified them had Gray's Theme not been included.
