This is very upsetting news. I have tickets for the Saturday night concert. Like some of the other local folks posting here, I have seen him in concert several times, and met him afterward when he came out to meet fans -- but I still look forward to the concert every time. For those coming from abroad, I can't imagine...

I agree -- he used to meet with us indoors, near the interior stage door. I don't think he's done that since 2006, but given these people this year, hopefully he'll start that up again next year. It's also much more conducive for taking photos to be indoors.

Well, he did come out about 45 minutes after the concert ended. Sadly, there were several people who didn't even go to the concert (wearing old t-shirts and ratty pants) with literally dozens of CD's bombarding Williams, who are then probably going to just sell them on eBay. He did sign many of them, and the security told them to leave, but they just went to a place Williams hadn't been yet... when he got there, he saw them again, got upset, and got into the BSO1 car and left. So no picture with him this year. Just the attached photo while he was signing autographs.

The Potter lasted 30-35 minutes, and it included a narration by Lynn Redgrave. The narration was between cues, not during them, and gave information about the next cue.

Did you wait around after the concert?

There were about 15 of us who waited around after tonight's Pops concert. He came out the stage door about 45 minutes after the concert ended, talked with fans, signed things, and took photos. I had him sign the picture with him and me (my avatar), and he also signed over my shirt. He said "We look great in that picture" as he signed it! -Scott

I bought my ticket for opening night, May 22nd. Perhaps I'll see some of you there! -Scott

I hope this is appropriate to post here: This Saturday night, March 17, at 8pm in MIT's Kresge Auditorium (77 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge), I will be conducting the world premiere of a 9 minute movie soundtrack that I wrote, "Suite from an Imaginary Movie", performed by the MIT Wind Ensemble. Also on the program is the world premiere of Concerto for Tuba (by Kenneth Amis of the world famous Empire Brass... he is among the top tuba players in the world... and there will be a special encore of him performing a piece on tuba that is even difficult to play on piano!), and Concerto for Flute. There will be a reception with (free) food after the concert, which will be around 9:30. You can get free tickets for the concert if you let me know you are coming. I will put them in an envelope at the place where you would normally buy tickets. I haven't decided which day(s) I going to the concert(s) yet. But I'll probably go twice again. He is usually in a hurry on the way in, so the best bet is to wait around after the concert (an hour or more) for him to appear. He comes to the northeastern door on the inside of the hall. Most days he is too tired to take pictures / sign things. Some days he does though. If you are really lucky, and there aren't many people waiting, he will take you up to his changing room / office! -Scott

When the winners are announced, the Oscar Orchestra starts to play the theme of the winner nearly immediately. Since I doubt they have every theme memorized, how can they do this? Possibly they don't have real sheet music, but instead a computerized screen which shows the theme they need to play? But in the few shots they showed of the orchestra I didn't see that. (Also, how would they have done that before computers were around?) Ideas? Does anyone have a definitive answer? Thanks, Scott

For people in the Boston area: I will be conducting the premiere of my "Suite from an Imaginary Movie" with the MIT Wind Ensemble on March 17 at 8pm. There are three cues from a non-existent movie. "Main Titles", "Love Theme", and "End Credits". My piece is about 8.5 minutes in total. Also on the concert is a world premiere of Kenneth Amis' (Empire Brass) new tuba concerto (he will be performing it with the Ensemble), a Mower flute concerto, the Mendelssohn Overture, and possibly Copland's Outdoor Overture. Tickets are $5, but I can get you free tickets if you let me know you are coming. Concert Information

You can try one of William's Olympic themes. They never fail to cheer me up. I especially think the 1988 (Seoul, Korea) theme is the most emotionally positive (maybe not my favorite one musically, but very uplifiting).

At least the chord right before the Gondor theme in "The White Tree" is the chord from the CD version, not from the movie version. I still don't understand how that minor chord made it into the film, while the CD has such a beautiful, more satisfying major chord.

I couldn't agree more! I saw it with Shore conducting in Atlanta, back in 2004, and when the Bridge cue built and built, but did not resolve to the Fellowship Theme (as it does in track 13 at 3:37), I was quite upset! Other than that, it was a great experience, and I even got to meet Shore briefly afterwards, so that made it even better.
