I'm 46 and it was an extremely tough choice to make, but I picked the Harry Potter box set.  We were visiting inlaws for Thanksgiving in Arkansas in 2018 and I remember waking myself up without an alarm because I was anticipating the HP set but at the same time not holding my breath.  When it was announced I could barely control my excitement so as not to wake up the wife next to me at 2AM LOL

    Good memories! :D

The JP set. Who knew TLW would turn out to be a much better score than Jurassic Park?

They're totally different, but I don't say that one is so much better than the other...

I still think that "Journey to the Island" from Jurassic Park, for example, is one of the most perfect, exhilarating, and powerful cues of John Williams' entire career! Beats anything from TLW and anything from HP!

Have you seen that cardboard sleeve the disc slots into? Not hard for a 10 year old to scratch a CD when sliding it in and out hundreds of times.

In my early twenties, when I got serious about collecting, I had to rebuy most of the John Williams CDs. As a child, I didn't know how to take care of things...

JP - I like the scores more.

    Yeah...

I still love listening to the HP set pieces like Harry's Wondrous World, Hedwig's Theme, The Chamber of Secrets, and Mischief Managed, but overall, the JP scores are more listenable from start to finish, I feel like.

I think the poll results will line up with the age of the voter

Meaning the younger generation prefer HP, the more older folks JP? Yeah, probably.

Probably JP/TLW, purely because that series was my childhood and I spent so much longer yearning for a complete release of TLW (nearly two decades!)

Yes, exactly! Took the words right out of my mouth.

When I saw Jurassic Park in the theater, I was twelve. That movie pretty much defined my teenage years, and those years are probably the most impressionable years for most people....

  4. Yeah, I know one set contains 2 movies, the other 3, etc. etc. But I'm not talking about the superficial stuff, but really the music itself, the whole scores from start to finish. John Williams's creativity and originality, his musical storytelling ability, the creation of pure art. Which set did you or do you still enjoy more?

I may be in the minority here but I've found that for me, it's Jurassic Park. Especially The Lost World contains so much great, previously unreleased, shockingly effective stuff, it beats even Azkaban - at least for me. I feel like I can really dive into the Jurassic scores and go on an adventure of the mind, escape into another, fantastic world... While I still adore the Harry Potter scores, of course, I may have finally outgrown the subject matter a bit.

    How about you?

I know weird things have happened in the past but I can't see any reason for Disney to license Star Wars to a smaller label.  Walt Disney Records is large enough to handle physical and digital releases themselves and retain all the profits. They'd want to make their money back from all those LA fees (5-6 hours worth, if they actually include all the early unused cues/alternates).

Disney is so humongous now, maybe they'll buy up Intrada, just so it can handle all of its soundtracks in the future...

    Weirder things have happened!

Well, the Russians were fighting for their lives.

America didn't have to enter the war. Nobody invaded us.

Without our entry into the war , Germany could have very well conquered WESTERN Europe.

The Normandy invasion was Canada, England and U.S. We paid a heavy price to liberate France

I'm not trying to belittle the contribution of the US, France, and the British in the war, don't get me wrong.  But like I said, one shouldn't try to rewrite history. Hitler invaded the Soviet Union, and the Soviets with their Red Army beat and defeated the Nazis. The Americans were simply on Russia's side.

One should see the whole picture, it's not like America came and defeated Hitler, even though that's the image the Americans like to present and spread... Incidentally with movies just like Saving Private Ryan

No, there aren't . Especially since it was originally the main title for one if the greatest of all WWII films.

    Check it out.

    I just listened to it.

After rewatching the brilliant SPR, I checked out some of the IMDB reviews.

Thankfully, most of the reviews gave it the highest rating.

Some complained about its "pro- American " bias" ( " What about Russia? They lost more lives than ANYBODY!".)

Well, it's an American movie, that's why it has a strong pro-American bias. Nobody denies that. Even Spielberg himself admitted that.

I know this comes as a shock to many people (Americans), but the Soviet Union defeated the Nazis, period. The Americans entered the war in the very last stages, when it was already abundantly clear that the Nazis were losing.... With the crazy anti-Russian propaganda bs going on in the US, most Americans aren't aware of that, and even if they did, they probably wouldn't care, either.

    Two beautiful WWII hymns.

Beautiful, yes. But there are literally thousands and thousands of choral pieces like this...

You should have included Empire of the Sun in this poll, because those three built the "War Rethought Trilogy", where Spielberg looks at war through an exceptionally emotional lens.

Hmmm, yeah, maybe. But then what about Schindler's List...?

And at the scene at the end where Tom Hanks is shooting with his pistol at the tank that is rolling up to him and then suddenly exploding I thought "Hey, isn't that the show down of Jaws?"

Yeah. I'm surprised that many people who watched the movie actually believe to this day that Tom Hanks's character shot at the tank and made it explode.

And I'm like. "Newsflash: The tank was bombed by the planes, duh... !"

JW has a long list of WW2-related movies. Less so for WW1, though. I can only think of WAR HORSE.

That's mostly because of Spielberg, I'm sure.

Although yeah, there is The Book Thief...

Germany twice attacks the world; in turn, we get two fine JW scores.

And yet you ask the world, and 90% will tell you the most warmongering country on this planet is, by far, the USA.

    The Nazis attacked only Europe.

Ha, ha. Not quite. I have an issue with live action films featuring anthropomorphized animals, but in WAR HORSE, the horse pretty much behaved as a horse, so no big issue.

So you're saying you don't like Babe

  11. 14 minutes ago, Holko said:

Huh. I will keep periodically trying in the coming years then.

    One example.

Check out the moment starting at around 8:50. One of the best quieter moments in the film, and also one of the best scored ones. When the familiar theme starts playing (so graceful, soothing, and gorgeous!), I get goosebumps. I mean wow. Spielberg's top-notch direction also helps, needless to say.
