I saw Carlito's Way again with a friend who hadn't seen it. I enjoyed it again, and he was suprised by how good it was (like I was the first time
).One question: is the new Ultimate Edition DVD (from 2005) worth upgrading to? I have the previous Collector's Edition from 2003, and I was wondering if the transfer/sound/extras were considerably better.

I saw the remake of The Man Who Knew Too Much for the first time the other night. Not one of Hitchcock's best, but still entertaining. Overall I enjoyed it more than the 1934 version, despite the original having a more memorable villain (Peter Lorre). The whole chapel/Chappell bit seemed rather contrived. Herrmann's score was effective, though surprisingly unmemorable. Overall a solid and entertaining thriller, but nothing special. ***/****

Or watch a bit of the actual scene here.
EDIT: Never mind, Steef already posted it.

Either of you know of a place where one might here samples of that score?
Morlock- who knows nothing about Star Trek tv scores
You can hear samples here, listen to the one for track 22.

"The Mountain", from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Even moreso in the context of the film.

It's not that easy - iTunes doesn't let you convert protected files.

1. The Fly
2. The Aviator
3. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
4. Se7en
5. Ed Wood

Not exactly a song, but it's a great piece (from a great scene in a great film).
And I haven't heard the At World's End score, but "Man with a Harmonica" is far superior to anything in the first two POTC scores.

Rob, that's a nice Jerry Goldsmith pic in your atavar. Can you pm me the orginal (high quality) jpeg? It inspires me to make a nice JG portrait

Your PM box is apparently full, so I'll post it here:

Superhero theme? John Williams - Superman: The Movie - "Main Title March"

Adventure theme? John Williams - Raiders of the Lost Ark - "The Raiders March"
Epic theme? John Williams - Superman: The Movie - "The Planet Krypton"

Comedy theme? Henry Mancini - The Pink Panther Strikes Again - "The Inspector Clouseau Theme"

Action theme? James Horner - Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - "Surprise Attack"

The cropduster scene in North by Northwest and the subway scene and car chase in The French Connection spring to mind.
I also like the way the music builds up to the bar fight Raiders of the Lost Ark, but the actual fight is unscored.
-
It was hacked to pieces by the studio, yes, but I still find a lot to enjoy in it.
-
Weren't a lot of those changes mentioned there made for the "Director's" cut 15 years ago? Like the unicorn dream and the removal of the happy ending.
-
The Apartment and One, Two, Three are very good. I also like The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, though that's 1970 (and it's sadly not the movie it should - and could - have been).
-
'Dana's Theme'?
From Ghostbusters.

Thanks - I've just about finished assembling the score, mostly following Jim's list in the thread Luke linked to. <_<
I have one question though:
Additional and alternate cues:20.Main Title (revised) - 4:07
21.Hypersleep (revised) - 2:43
22.The Alien Planet, part 2 (revised) - 3:21
23.Egg Chamber (revised) - 0:57
24.Face Hugger (revised) - 3:04
25.The Corridor (alternate) - 2:21
26.Sleepy Alien (revised) - 3:08
27.Breakaway (revised) - 3:01
Where is this cue on which isolated score? I can't seem to find it.

-
But I've always felt that there is something missing, I can't put my finger on it.
A good score?

I really like GoldenEye (the film), but I just don't find it very memorable.

I do listen to a lot of music that's not film music - mostly classical, but also the Rolling Stones and the Beatles and various others. But none of my musical interests are really focused as much as my interest in film scores - while I enjoy a lot of classical music I don't know enough to say which type of composers I tend to like. Some of Mozart's music I love, some of it just doesn't do anything for me at all. I'm yet to detect a "pattern" in what I do and don't like, if that makes sense.
Anton Bruckner & The Rolling Stones. That's an album I'd like to hear.

One of my favourites too, certainly my favourite from that score ("Up the Cathedral" is a fairly close second).
-
King's Row.
K.M.Who's never made it past the first few tracks
That's not so bad, aren't there only two tracks on the CD anyway?

-
The Adventures of Robin Hood, isolated score rip (it's not actually a pressed CD, but it's a legit copy of the complete 1938 recording, so I guess it counts).
I think I have a re-recording of Steiner's King Kong too, but I've never listened to it.Ray BarnsburyYou should, if it's the Stromberg/MSO one.

-
Of those, either OHMSS or FRWL... I'll go for FRWL.
-
I watched Casino Royale again. Very good film, not quite perfect, but enormously entertaining and the best Bond film since OHMSS. Incidentally, Roger Ebert finally got around to reviewing the film - he's apparently catching up on the films he missed while he was in hospital last year - you can read his review here. I agree with most of what he has to say, though I'd give it ***1/2 out of ****.
-
Good job, but I'm glad they re-did that one, the original cue doesn't really work very well IMO.

I had a look at that site, but the captures are so small it's difficult to tell.
And yes, there are two R1 anamorphic DVDs, this one from 2003, and this one from 2005. The former has the film plus a documentary, the latter one is double-sided, with the film on one side and bonus features (the same documentary, plus some other stuff) on the other. It also has DTS, which as far as I know no other version has.
Anyway, watched Mississippi Burning for the first time yesterday. Excellent movie, with very strong performances. I'm sort of ashamed I never watched it before, since I've always been a big fan of Hackman and Dourif.
