  1. Just got round to listening to the score. It's rather dull, isn't it? There's a few cool moments. But it's pretty much textbook film composition, stock gestures, and fairly 'voiceless' underscore.. Meh. I'll wait to see how it works with the film. Desplat has taken this kind of serialist, ostinato based approach to a lot of the underscore. I guess it gives things a kind of kinetic energy and propulsion.. but I find it all generally pretty tedious. It's all modally pretty dull too. Introduce a bit more chromaticism in there, Desplat!! Excited to hear the Williams moments in there!
  2. 0:20 - 0:38 is the Williams bit. ;D, I reckon. Well, at least definitely from 0:31 - 0:38. Not bad sounding. Pretty generic mesh of KOTCS light-heartedness / Battle of the Heroes though.
  3. I'm taking some time to learn properly about sculpting reverbs. I'm not getting the acoustics that I'm after right now. Too sloppy and washy.
  4. What a pro! Thanks for the feedback, and the compliments. I figure if I'm going to do these mockups, I might as well get them as perfect / realistic as I can possibly, reasonably manage. I'll experiment more with the field drums tomorrow. Should be able to get the whole unfinished section finished by tomorrow evening. It's been really great to be able to look into WIlliams' scores in really fine detail. There's always some beautiful details in there that you don't necessarily always 'get' unless you've seen it written down. The thing that amazes me about this cue is the rhythmic writing. Williams clearly isn't just a master of melody/harmony. The rhythmic counterpoint going on here is detailed and complex, and yet, completely 'natural' and very musical. In terms of musical sensibility, the whole thing really says something, that is accurate and fitting within the context it was written for. Not just timbrally, or in any obvious way, but also in terms of the musical flow and writing for all the parts. He's created a bombastic, militaristic and challenging march for the percussion; forceful, bold and rhythmically exciting figures for the brass; rapid movement and repetition in the strings; and his trademark modally mind-boggling runs in the winds. When you put them all together, it creates this piece of music that just makes sense. It speaks so clearly. It has a kinetic energy that is so perfect for the scene, and that translates to the concert hall very well. He 'gets' the energy of what he's writing for unlike any other composer out there, really. The crazy thing is that Williams probably writes this stuff with his eyes closed, whereas I don't think Zimmer has ever produced anything so musical and thoughtful. Actually, this cue reminds me a bit of the percussive brashness of The Battle of Hoth, but with a more 'fun', less perilous, 'pushing forward' / 'Jedis FTW' sort of feel.
  5. It's nearly there. Just 5 or so bars left now Here's today's updated version: http://www.sendspace.com/file/82a66c
  6. Thanks. It's a slow process, but I'm working my way through the whole unreleased section of the cue.
  7. Sure, I'll take a look at it after I've finished the R2 cue. Here's the progress I made today: http://www.sendspace.com/file/fv4hj9 It's such an exciting piece of battle/heroic music. The writing is so authentic and militaristic.
  8. I'm working on a mockup of the missing bars from 1m4a Get 'em R2 at the moment. Here's what I've done so far: http://www.sendspace.com/file/t7rgkr I'm willing to accept requests to do mockups from missing audio that we have the sheet music for.
  9. Check it: http://www.royalalbe...ve/default.aspx Booking my tickets ASAP!
  10. So, I've decided that the front pages need a complete overhaul. The design looks dated, and the methods used to create it are soooo 1999. Also, I hate Joomla. I think a nice HTML5 modern site is just what we need! But we need some good content as well.. I think we need to expand things a bit so there's more information and tidbits for people to find. I'm thinking complete score rundowns, average user ratings systems for releases, reviews, and design/skin the forums and front page in a similar way (so they feel like they're part of the same site!).. Anyone have any suggestions for front page ideas? Would be cool to have a section for complete cue sheets as well. I'm gonna use my own CMS (Content Management System) that I'm developing.. It will give us the power to have whatever we want on the front page, really.. If we can think of it, it can happen ;D ... and we've needed RSS feeds for sooo long now!
  11. Nice suggestion! Just installed it and tried it out.. working great.
  12. I've increased inbox sizes to 2000 messages.
  13. Why don't we just cut off the problem by increasing the inbox sizes? There's no reason why they should be so ridiculously small - they use up next to no space.. unless I'm missing something?
  14. Pretty seamless it seems! Sooo.. are there any changes anyone's been waiting a while for while I'm here?
  15. Hi Guys, The server migration is now complete. If you're seeing this message, that means you're now seeing JWFan hosted from the new server. Please use this thread to report any teething issues. I'm aware that the front page content isn't showing at the moment, and I'm looking at ways to fix that. Fixed Cheers!
  16. Well it requires quite a bit of confidence and charisma to keep 90 odd human beings under control. Some composers I'm sure are put off by that alone for a start. Also, it's not as easy as it looks. I remember Elfman mentioning that he prefers to be in the booth so he can really observe how the music is working with the pictures and make amendments as quickly as possible. It's not so easy to focus entirely on that when you're being distracted by the task of having to actually conduct the music.
  17. I've left the volume alone except for ReplayGain with an album gain of +5.25 dB (calculated by foobar)..
  18. I'm obsessed with the original Diagon Alley cue. It's fascinating, magical, quirky, whimsical. It just suits the scene so perfectly! Such good writing It's interesting that the new tempo and orchestral additions brought so much to it for me, compared to the part of the Children's Suite that we had on the OST.
