I love it. JW morphed the original composition into a melancholic Brahms-like romanza for violin. If all the new arrangements he did for ASM are powerful like this one, it's gonna be a very special album.

Wow, there are some very heavy string passages that I did not see coming. Very interesting, powerful new arrangement. Seems almost oppressive in feeling.

Found this on instagram, looks like Across the Stars was arranged for her. This is especially interesting since the Yo-Yo Schindler's list one was more of a transcription probably.

It's a bit like Gordy Haab's Battlefront - gets across the atmosphere but doesn't dig deeper into memorable melodies or have too much heart.

You don't get hospitalized immediately for a "routine illness". And you don't cancel events almost two weeks out. I don't buy it. I hope Williams will be OK but I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't.

Jacck got a reaction from _deleted_ in Tributes! (for Seiji)
Just been listening to the CSO Concert Recording.
Tributes! (for Seiji) is such a fantastic piece. It's so well crafted and thought out. Intricate interplay between parts, complex melodic writing, brilliant orchestration, original and innovative harmonic progressions, etc. What a brilliant piece!
What does everyone else think of this work, and does anyone else know any more about it - i.e. what inspired Williams to write it?

The horn march at the end of Journey to the Island has always been terrifically impressive in this regard. Other composers (*cough Gia cough*) are chuffed with themselves when they think up something of this quality, and they base an entire score around it, it'd be put out as their whole main theme. But John Williams thinks these little incidental moments up on the fly, and discards them like they're nothing afterwards. Because he's just always been a badass melodist like that.

Then you should check out Kleiber's concert performance of Beethoven's 7th symphony with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, when the flute enters in the 1st movement. Sublime! The volume is this recording is quite low, so remember to crank it up!

You haven't heard his Trumpet concerto.

Separately, The playing in "Adventures of Han" is horrible. Brass, especially. They sound seriously bad compared to the London players.

It's not about percussion (which I happen to love), it's about crap sounding synthesized "beats" as the young 'uns refer to it being placed under everything in this score to "epic it up".

There's nothing RCP sounding about ROTS's percussion. Chalk and cheese.

Beautifully horrifying sound at about 0:43.
This is the freshest, most passionate, exciting Star Wars score I've heard since Return of the Jedi.

Williams hasn't done anything "masterful" since 1997.

The whole thing's a mish-mash. Including Alan Silvestri (Marauders Arrive and others), David Arnold (Train Heist), Randy Newman, Don Davis (Into The Maw), Zimmer (Corellia Chase), Powell (imitating Chicken Run, HTTYD), and Williams (obvious). A whole load of 'chicken in the pot', there.

Why do some of Powell's harmonic cadences just sound... wrong? Can anyone explain what the fuck 1:30 [cadence at 1:35] in Flying with Chewie is? This is basic shit. I mean, at least Powell does a better job than Gia. But really this is just a poor state of things from a compositional perspective.

It's a Bond (David Arnold / John Barry) meets Goldsmith mashup! Probably due to the temp track.

As for the notes played by the horns, it could really be any generic, octatonic, spy-film motif. (I don't think it is a motif).
