I just came along to register my disgust at the new changes... Merging the two is bad enough - a composer as prolific as Williams clearly calls for his own dedicated fan site, not a shared one. But then, to rub salt in the wound with the statement "Because, let's face it: Michael Giacchino IS the new John Williams! ;-)" just made me do a bit of winky water.
What has happened to this community? And don't get me wrong, I think Giacchino is a fantastic composer, but he is far from the technically abled, well researched and practised composer that is John Williams.
EDIT: Oh right, it's April Fools day..

Here's one of my more recent works.

You can listen to more of my pieces at that very same site! It would be interesting to hear what people think influences me! Does it sound like I'm mimicking other compoers, or do I seem to have my own compositional voice?
what happened to it? in sadness and shameless self-promotion, i've restarted the thread! Here's a listing to the newest song i wrote. Very simple but watever. Hope you like it! i know she did:p.
Wonderful recording!

I have it, and it's great. Williams' Cello Concerto is my favorite of all his concerti that I've heard. Brilliant recording quality, brilliantly performed. Buy it!

The problem is, due to the varying types of media submitted, one really can't vote fairly. I mean, you really can't compare a sketch to an audio realization.
-
I'd have to say Edward Shearmur. Or, maybe, Don Davis.
-
As far as I know, all Williams signature edition scores have either the conductor's score on its own, or score+parts available seperately.
-
I really can't vote because I do both depending on my mood.

Learn the art of faking it - approximation!

I don't believe the string passage is really dovetailed at all. As far as I can tell, it's purely violas with doubling marimba adding that colour. Williams talks about this a bit in the Minortiy Report interview that he gave, in which (if I remember correctly) he referred to it has violas with marimba. I think it was probably a deliberate timbral decision on Williams' part. He writes for the violas in some fairly extreme ranges for the instrument (particularly the lower ranges), which gives that almost washed-out, kinda thin sound, but somehow seems to be fitting, and it also seems to allow the marimba to cut through the texture a bit more.
Also, the staccato brass figure below is played by trombones/bass trombone with tuba (or possibly cimbasso but not likely). I don't hear any horns there. The horns do come in later for a few notes - higher up and legato though.
And yes, this is a fantastic original cue that is so well suited to the scene. It enhances it so well and just seems to capture that feel and enhance the mood of the scene so amazingly. True genius!

Over the Hedge is a good score.
-
... which piece is it that you're after?
-
Sorry, but you don't know what you are talking about. To imply that Don Davis did a cut and paste job proves that you know NOTHING about composition, or music in general for that matter. Sure, Davis uses themes and motifs that Williams developed in the first two films, but this is to be expected, if anything. In my opinion, it would be more of an insult if Davis completely ignored Williams' original themes and motifs.
Plus, I think Davis did a great job of incorporating Williams' existing themes with his own original material.

To judge a film score based on the quality of its' movie counter-part is just unfair.
Yet inevitable.
-
I also think that people link the score to the shitty film, which affects peoples thoughts and feelings towards the score sub-consciously.

What about the Bass Clarinet! Such a satisfying whole sound. I have the pleasure of playing Bass Clarinet in my University Wind Orchestra and it's such a great instrument to play.. it's soo satisfying to play the lowest notes of the instrument.
Williams uses the instrument to great effect in many cues, albeit subtly (usually).

Stop talking about notation software!! Finale, Sibelius, etc... these are all notation packages - nothing to do with sampling. The guy wants a free orchestral sample library of decent quality.
Sorry to tell you that no such thing exists.
-
I'm sorry, so now it's better to have an orchestrator do a big budget summer movie then an experienced and talented composer like young?
That is just....insane!
How do you know that Bartek isn't a talented composer? Anyway, I'd actually go as far as to say that i'm glad that Elfman isn't scoring Spiderman 3. He demonstrated a lack of imagination and lack of inspiration on Spiderman 2 so I don't see why Spiderman 3 would be any different. Young's cues for Spiderman 2 were innovative masterpieces that heightened the scenes (particularly the Runaway Train sequence) considerably more than in any scenes that Elfman wrote music for, in my opinion.

Favorite film composer? Or favorite composer of all time?
-
It could just be some form of prepared piano. Or perhaps even prepared harpsichord. I'm suprised none of you also mentioned the fairly prominent sounding bass clarinet.
-
It's simply an orchestral bass drum followed by crash cymbals. You can tell it's not a timpani because a timpani is a pitched instrument, where as the "boom" clearly isn't pitched.
-
I hope this isn't true. I'm really looking forward to hearing Christopher Young's work on the film.
Young's music for the train sequence has temp track written all over it.Explain?
-
There are some scores that you listen to and know that it is Williams, but others (like Schindler's List) are not like that.
I guess it is the same for most other composers.
Schindler's List is riddled with Williams-esque qualities.
-
That's a good thing too.
There's nothing wrong with electronica if it's used cleverly and sparingly.
-
lol. So basically you're creating your own sample library of cuts/edits of solo instruments from existing recordings. Certainly time consuming.. There are already some fairly affordable properly and specially made orchestral sample libraries out there, which would yield better results.

Yawn. How about something more original?

Agreed wholeheartedly. I was disappointed to hear this type of music even infecting the beginning of the IJ4 trailer. Luckily the Raiders March came in just in the nick of time.. any later and I would be thinking "I hope that's shepherd's pie in my knickers"..
