I'm hopefully going to get some of my Piano arrangements recorded soon , so.. Watch this space

I agree, especially for the final confrontation which should have included Voldemort's Theme without a doubt. I've often sat at the piano and just played around with that scene placing in statements of Voldemort's theme.. it's such a usable theme. That whole score was uninspired and Doyle's arrogant attitude annoys me. In some of the interviews he's given it's almost as if he's saying "I'm confident that I've produced a score that is at least as good as anything Williams has produced for the series"...

Probably the most advanced and realistic sound libraries come from the Vienna Symphonic Library.. Other popular sample Libraries come from East West and arguably Garritan (althought the quality of some of the Garritan library is questionable). However, to use the samples you're going to need a sampling engine. I would personally recommend Native Instruments Kontakt 2. It's a brilliant bit of software, it supports all the major sample library formats (incl. Giga), and is absolutely riddled with amazing and innovative features. Ideally you would use this with a sequencing package such as Cubase SX (Kontakt will plug in to Cubase as a VST instrument). Alternately, If you're not quite up to the whole Sequencing idea and you perhaps use notation software such as Sibelius, you could run Kontakt 2 as a standalone application along side Sibelius, and connect them together using a Virtual MIDI Cable (Maple Virtual MIDI Cable is Freeware).. If you need any more advice just ask

Most brilliantly scored moments in film music
Mooz0r replied to Delorean90's topic in General Discussion
I have to say.. The moment where Kong falls off the empire state building ... JNH's music so gracefully and sadly complimented that moment. It was so beautiful and sadening, and absolutely perfectly scored. -
In some of Williams' more recent scores (In Particular - AI, WOTW, and Minority Report) he has written a few slightly dissonant string cues like Cybertronics from AI. If you listen to some of Bartók's work (Take Music for Strings, Percussion & Celesta [sz.106])) you'll find the harmonies and overally melodic "style" is extremely similar to these dissonant string cues that Williams has written in recent years. Also, listen to Neptune - The Mystic (The Planets), you'll definetely recognise that Williams was influenced by this piece of music in some of his more mysterious cues. In particular listen to tracks like The Birth of the Twins and compare it with Neptune. On top of this there is the other similarities that have been mentioned such as the ending of Mars (The Battle of Yavin), Stravinsky's Firebird (Arrival of Tink), etc.

Snare Ensemble? Usually there is only one snare drum! BTW, it sounds soooo bad because of Shawn Murphy's shite recording! -Erik- I think you'll actually find that in most hollywood recordings, a Snare Ensemble is used to give a fuller sound.

Chronicles Of Narnia - Recordings Sessions

Bit lazy of the maker to just call most tracks "unreleased".. o_O -
It has the applause and stuff also then, I assume...
-
A complete AI score (not a bootleg) already exists.

Probably because it's a solo snare drum as opposed to the more commonly heard Snare Ensemble (usually 3 snare drums)

Really?

I do arrange and perform a lot of John Williams music - it is always very well received, but I've not written down much. Your arrangement is interesting but you miss out alot of "colour" from the original cue - these are the things that I always try to capture in my arrangements. Like the harp glissandos and woodwind flourishes. Also, you seem to just plonk a lot of block chords which makes the piece seem a little slow. Don't be afraid to just make up something that wasn't in the original cue.. Obviouslly a piano can't sustain like strings can so just play around with broken chord patterns in the bass.. Using Root->5th->10th->5th (legato bass) often gives a Williams-ish quality I find. Also, one thing I do quite commonly is octave tremolos in the bass to emulate timpani rolls or something similar.

Yeah - you are refering to the bit where the celesta is playing in unison with the violins. It does sound like the celesta slips up though.

I can't imagine the word elegant, and AOTC in the same sentence, and yet I've used it as well

The most horrible CGI in a mainstream film...

Some effects from the Second Charlie's Angels film are pretty bad. -
For those of you who don't know, Last.fm is a website where people can create their own online musical profiles. Whenever you listen to tracks in your media player, the AudioScrobbler plugin will automatically submit your played tracks to your online profile at Last.fm. It then generates top 10 charts for Artists/Tracks, etc.. It really is very cool! Anyway, I have created a Last.fm group for all JWFanners. It would be great if you guys could join up because it will be really interesting for us to connect together and see eachother's top tracks/artists. It will also be interesting because charts are generated based on the tracks listened within the group too.. Here's the URL if you wish to join up (it's all free): http://www.last.fm/group/JWFan/ Hope to see some of you there soon!

Those tracks that never fail to give you goose bumps
Mooz0r replied to BLUMENKOHL's topic in General Discussion
Uh god! Lovely! How did I miss that? It fits so cleanly in the track though , with the petticoat lane Celesta part either side of the bit we're talking about... Maybe it was tracked in to the end of the film, originally supposed to be used in the petticoat lane scene? -
Yeah, and he's british too. How about that.

Performance is OK.. They've added a load of fake reverb though (way too much).. Well, either that or the orchestra were sitting in an arena LOL
