  1. There's 3 I can think of...

John Williams - the spiders theme in Harry Potter 2 (2002)

Howard Shore - Shelob's Theme in Return Of The King (2003)

    Danny Elfman - Doctor Octopus's theme in Spider-man 2 (2004)

Can anybody think of any others?

Also, what do you think of the idea? Clever, or getting over-done?

    I can't speak for Shelob's Theme, but the other two aren't 8-note motifs/themes.

  2. Another thing for those complaining the trombones in NightClub Brawl sound bad.

These are 20 + year old scores. Compared to any of the Star Wars OT releases these sound magnificent . Imagine if ToD sounded like the RotJ Special Edition?

    Agreed.

So, if my CD Player is too lousy to hear any true faults from "Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi", I will not hear this supposedly lousy sound quality from the Box Set, then?

This box set sounds better than recently released OSTs ..A.I.,AotC,RotS...

I used to find Last Crusade a bit meh compared to the first 2 ,but here it is a true revelation .

Disagreed. Those scores sound like professional releases. There may be minor conventional/traditional recording based flaws, but the mastering is probably exactly as creatively intended.

  3. maybe the stage was small or too big for the orchestra (i dont know which of both would create reberb- i think the later)

It's not uncommon for mixes to have small amounts of artificial reverb added to further create a sense of depth and weight. In fact, most soundtrack releases will have that sort of treatment, it's just not done very well here. The strings, woodwinds, and horns sound beautiful. But it's the instruments that have a really sharp attack that cause the problems - like the harp(s) and trombones.

  4. I know a lot of you will think that I sound like a pretentious snob for saying this, but the mastering flaws make some tracks almost unlistenable for me. Just listening properly to The Nightclub Brawl is all it takes. Listen to the trombones and the harp. The delay/reverb effect is horrible. It sounds so messy and muddy.

I'm not complaining about the release as a whole; I'm just saying it could've been done a lot better, and I think it's fair to say that the scores deserve much better treatment than they've received here.

Can anyone else even hear what I'm talking about here?

  5. Let's be honest - the box set is completely aimed at enthusiasts who want to have as much of the complete scores as possible. So Concord should have known that the quality was going to be important to the target audience. The whole argument of "does it really matter" isn't a very good one in this case.

I can't imagine your everyday average guy going out and buying the collection, but the treatment of the mix is as if it were aimed at that dynamic.

  6. Just listening now.. The mix and mastering is pretty dire. Just listen to The Nightclub Brawl, for example. Listen to the brass (trombones in particular). It sounds as if they've added some tacky reverb that ends up sounding more like a quick delay effect. Each staccato trombone hit sounds like it has an after delay that ends up sounding muddy and messy. Plus, the high ends are over-gained in some places so much that you can actually hear the noise as the sections are brought in and out.

The whole mix just sounds messy and over separated. Guess it could be worse, but the delay on the trombones especially is completely unforgivable - don't know how that could go into the final mix un-noticed.

  7. but your version is PAL speed!!!

Ok anyone has this rear channel rip in US version?

still it is a shame that you didn't know :) by the way I can make it slower and deeper (one half tone) without any loss of quality in a few seconds

I can assure you there is a loss of quality. You're stretching the music - the time stretcher algorithm is effectively spreading the bits across a longer timespan. It may not sound audibly much worse but there is a loss of quality. Better to get it straight from the NTSC source.

  8. What about Debney's "love" theme for Bruce Almighty and Silvestri's warm theme for Cast Away (which, by the way, are uncannily similar). Also, the warm theme from Horner's Jumanji and that horrible sickly family theme that Don Davis wrote for Jurassic Park 3.

Has anyone else read this book? It's absolutely fantastic. It covers every aspect of film scoring and has MASSES of excerpts from unreleased film scores. I was amazed to find excerpts of cues from A.I. (2M1 Reading the Words, Cryogenics, Hide and Seek, etc.), The Matrix, Minority Report, Close Encounters, etc.

It also has many resources from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, including a fairly complete cue list.

The Foreword is written by John Williams.

Just thought I'd bring this textbook to awareness for any of you who aren't aware of it as it's seriously brilliant.

  10. Just been listening to the CSO Concert Recording.

Tributes! (for Seiji) is such a fantastic piece. It's so well crafted and thought out. Intricate interplay between parts, complex melodic writing, brilliant orchestration, original and innovative harmonic progressions, etc. What a brilliant piece!

What does everyone else think of this work, and does anyone else know any more about it - i.e. what inspired Williams to write it?
