  1. Does anyone else see a similarity between the suspense theme heard in the second half of The Falling Car and High Wire Stunts, and that terrorist motif from BLACK SUNDAY? They both feature chromatically rolling thirds doubled at octaves, giving a sort of Gothic effect. Maybe it's just another Williamsism?

    If I'm following you, it's similar but backwards? Nice catch...

    Also of note is how "Revealing the Plans" is like a diminished version of both the Island Theme and the Jurassic Park theme from JP which are melded together until it goes major and you hear the fanfare at the end.

    If I had more time, I would help you with your TLW breakdown. I've nearly finished mine for JP, even started a video series about it on YouTube. I had been contemplating doing one for TLW but until today, I hadn't had the chance to fully redo my TLW edit and finish studying the score but there are a lot of little things like that.

    Also - not sure if anyone else has picked this up, but we're missing a page (4 bars) on The Trek - 113-16.

    There's also a page missing in "The Round Up" if I recall. Threw me for a loop a few times. lol

  2. I think some of my favourite moments in the score are when Williams nods to other pieces.

    First and foremost "Steiner in the Grass" is an OBVIOUS homage to "The Island" from the Original King Kong which, if you look at the story of TLW, its almost based on it and Williams being Spielbergs "Max," it only makes sense to give a nod to that.

    Secondly, I love when nick is in "Camp Jurassic" and as the camera reveals the mural for the park as it was intended to be, you hear a direct lift from the score to JP in "Entrance of the Park." Which, for all those interested in a little side story, I emailed that guy who painted it (and the mural in the Visitor Center in JP) and here's a piece of that conversation:

    "I'm afraid Hollywood doesn't need dinosaur artists to inform their design teams any longer--everyone's familiar with the material now. The following Jurassic Park movies didn't result in any work for me--apart from a poster on the wall in Jurassic Park II that I sold Amblin for $15.00. I met the producer of the third Jurassic Park movie a few years ago who mentioned how everyone had used my books as resources for their designs. I suggested he hire me next time--and that I liked doing books because it allowed me to direct. Doubt I made a good impression.

    Another great moment for me in is, of course, the arrival at the Jurassic Park: San Diego facility. Great moment. (It's only a model. Shh!)

  3. I don't know enough about this score to truly answer this on my own so I thought I'd ask.

    Viewing the Cue summary sheet, I notice there was a cue called "Hospital Wing" and it says "OMIT" next to it which should imply it wasn't recorded. Not knowing the score better than I do, I can't identify this, but in the deleted scenes, that exact scene has music that does not sound edited and sounds...pretty spot on with the emotion from the scene...

  4. If I may add to a slightly old conversation here, I believe the box sets has an interview where they talked about the camera in COS. They were saying how they had found a really great hand held camera man who could move very smoothly and in very different ways... to make the camera FEEL like a snake moving around the halls of Hogwarts around Harry and his friends. I agree though, some of it was a bit too much and watching that film somtimes gives me a bit of a headache.

  5. I've performed with a harpsichord before in chamber groups and the difficulty was it took an engineer to tune the damn thing. Then the ORCHESTRA had to tune to IT.

    I wonder if it's more of a logistical thing. How would you mic it, then waste how much time tuning it and the orchestra to it? I imagine a synth celeste, being perpetually in tune and easily "mic'd" would simply be out of necessity in the tight schedule required.

  6. I once did an edit with the unused music over the Dodgeson reveal. I thought it worked brilliantly... but the thing is the film needed an uplift...the whole of the opening was so dark that the first cue that was at all uplifting should go back into the realms of "scary" and foreboding was a bit overkill. It allowed the film to be uplifted...float for a minute or two, then go straight into the literal uplifting of "Journey to the Island."

    As for the rest, I always listen to my scores as recorded...not necessarily as intended (no overlaps)

    I also always figured that the "Hungry Raptor" music was out of place too... but they also shortened the sequence too and perhaps that had to do with it. William's scored an old cut, they placed the music in and really didn't feel it was right, and by this point they were already working on Schindler's List and just put in the sourced music... similarly to how the kitchen sequence had music from another part of the film (Preparing to Meet the Monster) despite the fact that Spielberg couldn't speak any higher praise about the cue on the album cover. I'm assuming it was too damned scary and it frakkin is! That scene traumatized me as a kid and if it were scarier than it is now, I dunno if I could have stayed in the theater lol

  7. The fact that it took this long to realize it shows how good it is. It's very well done and everytime I hear it, I want to be at the park heh...

    A few other movements that play in the opening of the park are based on other Hook cues too.

    I mean, If you list all the rides in the park that William composed for:

    1) Jurassic Park

    2) ET

    3) Jaws

    4) Earthquake (although they technically never used his score and the ride is now "Disaster!"

    5) Harry Potter

    not to mention during Christmas I heard "Home Alone" in Sues Landing and you say you've heard Hook at the Port of Entry lol...

I've been meaning to post this and I may have to make a comparison video showing it as some of the music I have from Islands of Adventure is not available otherwise but has anyone here ever noticed how similar the music to "Call to the Adventure" from Universal's theme park "Islands of Adventure" sounds to Hook?

  9. If I may interject, I think some of the clues may be in the following Cues.

    It does say on the sheet music "Reel 9/10 Pt. 3a"

    My question then is, why the A?

    The next cue is "Reel 10 Pt. 1"

    The next cue then is called "Reel 10 Pt. 2"

    This would seem to me to show that "A Tree for my Bed" is really:

    "Reel 9 Pt 3, Reel 10 Pt A" or "9m3/10mA"

    That's a LONG title... so perhaps for the sake of shortening it, he simply wrote "Reel 9 'to' 10, Part 3a"

  10. Hey all, don't really post a whole lot anymore but I thought i'd bring attention to a little project I've been working on.

    Prime Survival is the fruition of several years worth of work. It began on a forum JPToys.com in the mind of a then very young (13/14) director Jack De La Mare wanting to make a fourth Jurassic Park film. After several writers and about a year of work, a scene here and there were shot until the film really started to take off. They've been inpost pretty much ever since, turning over media to me (who had volunteered a long time ago to do SFX and music).

    This is truly my first work and a lot of it started on another program on another computer in another time with a different quality sound library lol... so there has been a great deal of growth for me as a composer as i did it.

    I set out to write something in the vein of The Lost World/War of the Worlds. The story revolves around three boys who end up on an island only to find that it is inhabited by dinosaurs and their fight for survival.

    I chose early on not to utilize any of the beloved Jurassic Park themes for a few reasons: we have heard them over used a million times in JP3, this is a completely different island, I wanted to explore my own strengths as a composer, and lastly, I was afraid of copyright lol.

    After we attempted to gain some connection to Universal, only to find an official liscence cost $10,000, the films title was changed to simply "Prime Survival" (formerly "Jurassic Park: Prime Survival.")

    Post has finally finished and in the next few days the film will be posted online (and will eventually be available on DVD for free).
