  1. It's possible. Sounds like it could be the drum circle thing he was talking about. If so, I'm semi-relieved--it's certainly not the standard wall-of-sound percussion we've come to expect, so that helps. There are times in the trailer where I can just let it go and let it be its own thing, but there are others where it feels a bit undercooked. We'll see (IF it's Zimmer). The trailer itself, though? Oh, yeah. Looking good, I think. Looking quite good. I'm ready for this.
  2. Paul Shipper is awesome. I remember seeing his art on Indiana Jones fansites over the years.
  3. Wow, what is even going on...looks like it could be quite good. I'm definitely done now, though; no new videos until I actually see the film.
  4. Ugh. Probably gonna miss this one; I just don't have money for it at the moment.
  5. I also haven't seen any of the originals yet. One of my best friends is gonna be in town in a couple weeks for my senior recital (!) and we've talked about seeing them, so I'm hoping we'll be able to do a marathon of the originals then. My guess is that 2 and Army of Darkness will be more my speed--I'm a horror newbie, for sure--but I've seen some pretty graphic clips of the original on YouTube that assured me I could at least tolerate it. I figure it's going to at least be worthwhile to see it once for the cinematic perspective--seeing what Raimi and co. pulled off with so little.
  6. Please tell me that was just a mistake about replacing the usual string section. But, hey, at least Zimmer knows that if there's one thing we need in a Superman score, it's a by God drum circle!
  7. I thought it was pretty obvious that's what everyone was talking about, Thor. That's what I've been going on about this whole damn time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4JYkj0CIDw&t=4m50s
  8. "Desert Chase" is a good example of that kind of poorly executed edit, but a number of them (especially more recent) are very smoothly executed. Thor, I wouldn't expect you to notice necessarily by listening to just the album; this is kind of my point, though. I think you understand the concept now, even if you disagree: people see a film and hear the original score, and they like it. Some of the music that they really like is not there. They want to be able to listen to it. In this specific case, we are talking not about the simple omission of a cue, but about music that was actually edited out of a whole cue for the CD, thereby actively changing the cue, and (in the opinions of those favoring the omitted passage's inclusion) rendering it inferior in some way to its full original form. I could've sworn that in the past you'd even said you weren't in favor of that; that you were thinking of soundtrack production in terms of selection and sequencing of cues, not cutting them up. It seemed odd that you were characterizing all of this as some kind of "individual cue obsession" when it's simply a subset of the same old issue that it's always been: the desire for a full(er) representation of the score as composed and recorded.
  9. I understand that you're in it for the holistic experience more than anything else (correct me if I'm wrong), but it doesn't take an extravagant amount of extra attention to the music to recognize moments within it that you like. You say you're interested in great cues as highlights; well, highlights are exactly what people feel are missing when they point these cues out. "Rescuing Sarah" and "Anakin's Dark Deeds" are perfect examples, where the climactic material of both are either shortened or omitted entirely. The big picture may be the most important thing, but it would be nothing without its parts.
  10. Okay, forgive me, you all, but I'm gonna bite, if ever so briefly. Thor, the C&C debate has gone around and around, but in a couple of threads now you've been bringing up this "individual cue" obsession, so I just want to be sure: you do understand that people aren't asking for singles of these cues? Conversely, do not forget that all the great concept albums still break down into tracks, passages, moments. Some people just want it all, but a lot of people actually think that there are many of these single cues or microedited cues that would benefit their respective scores at least on the small scale, but often even in the large scale of the work as a whole. You surely disagree, and that's fine, but reading these comments almost makes it feel like none of the discussion over the years has even happened.
  11. I could swear the orchestrations are totally new. But maybe it's just the magic of a non-Wallin mix. I think you're right. There were definitely some touches in the first couple of videos that were different--some extra trilling, etc.
  12. First one I've seen online was a Facebook post that J.J. wanted Ryan Reynolds for a young Han Solo in a standalone film.
  13. The first scenes in the town made me wish they'd just made a straight Western.
  14. I've noticed that too. I think it's in the synth part. The brass notes are there, but it's like there's a bit of a click to the start of the synth.
  15. While we've got re-examinations of the score going, I must say that I think the single most effective bit of editing for the album experience is "Hatching Baby Raptor." More than any other combined track, I think, it feels like a whole piece, like it's meant to go together. I don't agree with a lot of the decisions made for the album sequencing, but that one I definitely respect.
