Just because some cultural phenomenon is relatively young, that doesn't mean it's necessarily harmful.

You might be able to convince me if you were to present me with a metastudy on the supposed benefits of this mode of listening, or inversely the detrimental effects of divided listening.

Oh and hearing loss is cumulative, and above 75 decibels, you start to get accumulation over time.

Burden of proof is on that which is newly introduced.  We'll see in a decade or two!

  3. Sharky, humans have had access to “always-on” music for less than the lifespan of an average human. Just because you can do it doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. You’re looking at the rule very naively.  There are more benefits than just ritual and preciousness.

Anyways, we can catch up in a few years when you can’t hear anything and have fucked up your dopaminergic system and developed a crippling inability to focus!

  4. Koray used to listen to music on his laptop.

That’s like eating food with a terrible cold and sinus infection. Sure the food goes down, but man you’re missing on flavors!

Airpods are pretty good, but they don’t capture the lower end of music well, and you don’t need to be audiophile to hear that. And no headphone will ever capture the chest thump a bass drum gives over speakers or in person.

Did you know there is a piano in the imperial march?

  5. For that budget, you can pull off an AKG K712 if you use Croc’s Amazon link (164 GBP) and a Fiio E17K Alpen 2 (99 GBP) portable amp.

That will be able to drive the K712 at a healthy non-deafening volume.

You will absolutely need an amp for the K712.

    Howdy!

So my trusted headphones (earbuds, as Faleel tells me... ;-) ) of almost five years have gone the way of the Dodo (on the right side only [broken wire within the chord, I suppose], but you can't do much with half a Dodo, right?), and I'm painfully not up-to-speed on tech stuff.

I used to have the in-ear headphone from Klipsch (Image S4i, those with the soft rubber inset that kept noise out), and would like to go for something similar. I seem to recall that they cost about $100, and I'd be fine with paying this amount. Sound quality was more than acceptable for someone like me. No wireless Bluetooth ones, though, because I'd lose them before even having them...

So...hit me up me suggestions for similar in-ear headphones similar to the parametres described above.

    Ta & tata from Albertatata!

You're looking for IEMs. In Ear Monitors. I don't use IEMs...so no clue! :(

  7. Go to Crocs amazon UK link. Sign up for the free trial prime and get the 712 for 164 GBP.

You will I’ll need an amp keep that in mind before you buy. Croc can probably attest to the before after.

Funny, I just saw this a couple of days ago ...

They very much look the same. What's the difference between 712 and 702?

The 712 have a slightly smaller sound stage, in exchange for a bit more oomph and a smoother, darker sound.

The 702 sound like the orchestra members are sitting farther apart, and the trumpets are shined to a mirror finish for God, but bass is basically a token.

Both are fantastic, but the K712 excels beyond just orchestral music, so it’s a better all-arounder.

Heads up, when you get the M-Stage HPA-3u there is a red power voltage switch on the side (115V/230V) you need to set correctly for your region before you plug in, and the instructions don’t make that clear. In the US if you set it incorrectly (the US should be 115V) you’ll get white noise and no sound and think your unit is broken.

In Europe (generally should be 230V) you could damage your unit.

My guess is they come out of the box set to 230v to annoy Americans and avoid such damage.

OK then bought your recommended combo. Hoping for the best :)

Will see if I fancy buying HD660s sometime later this year. It's not like those K712 were that expensive or anything.

    Karol

Hope you’re ready to hear how bad some recordings/mixes are! That’s what happens when you get to reference level headphones.

That’s why I encourage people to have a fun pair of headphones that doesn’t show all the details.

    Bruce Botnick? 👌

    Shawn Murphy? 👎

    Not far off the mark!

Hey, @Blumenkohl, so you're saying that this amp you're recommending would  be good enough to drive something like Sennheiser HD700? Although the one I'm thinking about is actually HD660s which some local stores have at decent prices.

EDIT: Hmm...those K712 look tempting though. And yeah, cheaper too.

    Karol

Those amps could drive the four jet engines on a 747.   :P

I've got ATH-M40X which to me sound more neutral to me than 50X. I use them as a more portable pair but need something more posh for home use. I was thinking about AKG's but that band worries me. I've got a rather large head.

    Karol

I have a large head as well. They do start digging in at the top of my head after 2-3 hours.

But honestly listening nonstop to music that long isn’t good for hearing, so I consider it a feature.

I am really tempted to buy myself some fancy Sennheisers for home use (and amp/DAC). Anything from HD598 to HD700 is within my budget but it's hard to make up my mind. Opinions tend to vary. Which ones would be most suitable for film scores and watching films?

    Karol

HD598 doesn’t need amp, you can drive it straight out of an iPhone no problem. HD700 needs an amp.

Honestly my AKG K702 paired with an M-Stage HPA-3U+ (Beast of an amp and dac all in one) sounds 98% like the Sennheiser HD800 that I trialed (same amp, it can drive anything) for a while at a fraction of the cost. The Sennheiser sounded slightly more fun with a tad more bass if you were paying close attention. It was also more comfortable. The AKG K702 had a wider soundstage, which work better for orchestral music.

In the US Amazon store a K702 is $187. An HD800 is $1080. An HD700 which is $500

Here is what I would do: get an AKG K702, or 712, or whatever the latest version of it is, buy an M-Stage HPA-3U+, AND get yourself an HD598 (or something with a completely different sound signature, like an Audio Technica M50x, for bass and treble) for when you want to plug into a smartphone directly and you’ll still come out ahead of the higher end Senns!

@Blumenkohl just wanted to thank you again for that headphone recommendation. There's some kind of magic inside them because I've been using them for yard work since I got them and everytime it's still "battery medium" like it was when I got them, and they last for hours. Yesterday was finally the first day I got a "battery low" and they finally died. I charged them up and got a "battery high" just now and feel like they'll go all summer before the next charge! Thanks again!

    Glad you like them! :)

  14. Man...this was the time I'd buy every new Giacchino album. And this still stands out as the best film score of his.

I haven't bought a Giacchino album since Jupiter Ascending. His new stuff is the occasional Spotify/Apple Music listen these days...

    Serious question

Anybody know of any good bluetooth over the ear headphones?  Something like these?

    61Mm5I0stVL._SL1100_.jpg

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H1XKC2U/

I need them for mowing the lawn / snowblowing;  With earbuds I can't hear a podcast over the engine, and with wired the wire always gets in the way or the plug falls out of my phone.  So it has to be bluetooth and has to be big and sturdy to cover my ears and be fine in outdoor scenarios

    Any suggestions?

I don’t normally recommend Bose but these are pretty good as far as sound and noise cancellation.

  16. My favorite gadget on the planet right now, because it's so un-gadget-like. A couple of strange 1.0 user interface choices (i.e. you can't control volume from them)...

But it just kinda works. It's an invisible but vital part of my daily life.
