  1. You're absolutelly right. There's no point in arguing about this. We can choose the one we like best. But this doesn't works on every single soundtrack cd... I love the narration on Angela's Ashes, and I love the text on Unfinished Journey, or in The Reivers suite... but I don't find that this would work with other scores like E.T. or Raiders or even on smaller scores like Presumed Innocent, Accidental Tourist or Saving Private Ryan.
  2. I, on the other hand, prefer to listen the narration version cd.
  3. Yes, we should all be gratefull to Ocelot, who made this available in the first place. I didn't get it from him, but I think we must pay tribute to him for having this live recording.
  4. Yes, you should watch the movie, but most important you should read the book. My favorite book from this last few years. And the closest adaptation I've ever seen.
  5. Star Wars translates the same way here... But no in Brasil, were it's rightly translated.
  6. Does anyone knows if the sound on this mp3.com release -- http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/cds/199/199533.html --is any better than on the earlier one.
  7. For some reason, I don't think that Mr. Williams releases his scores on Sony, just to not re-record them. And I don't find likelly that future releases like this ones might be performed by the Pops. Williams stated a few times, after retiring form musical director post, that Keith Lockart's recording career with the Bosotn Pops was most important, than his recodings with this orchestra. And since it seems he now have his own orchestra in L.A. (The L.A. Recording Arts Orchestra), he might do those re-recordings with them... But I would loved to have the Cello Concerto with the Boston Symphony.
  8. There was a store here in Porto (Portugal) that was very good -- I got there many hard to find releases. They wouldn't get those club releases (like FSM or Varese's), but everything else could be found... but sometimes a little expensive. But I was amazed to find in Paris, at a Fnac store many FSM releases -- our local Fnac stores aren't that good... and any special order ussualy gets too expensive too.
  9. Not everyone feels frustated like you. I'm sorry that you feel that way, but I agree with our beloved Maestro John Williams, when HE (not Sony) decided to include narration. In fact he wanted to have the text narrated by Frank McCourt himself, but for some reason, I believe lack of time, they had to use the same actor that did the narration on the film. If you love the book, as Mr. Williams and my self love, then you'll learn to love the narration. And even if you don't like it, well, i still think it works well with the music.
  10. From the concert notes of the Boston premiere, in April 22, 1999:
  11. In fact I tried to order soem stuff from Vinilo a year ago, but was never able to submit the form...
  12. Amazon UK does have a good selection... but maybe you need to go for some specialized retailer, like screenarchives.com or intrada.com I've worked with both, and they are great... and have almost everything you might be looking for. In Europe, there are a few, like www.vinilo.es, but never used them.
  13. As far as I know, the Boston Pops and Boston Symphony ahve about the same number of musicians. Thay are the same ones with the exception of 12 of the Symphony's principal musicians, that are replaced during the Pops season. Also a symphony orchestra of the classical period is much smaller (some 60 members) tha a modern one. Our local ochestra, wich has not the "Symphony" on the name, has some 90 musicians and his a symphony orchestra, as I'm told -- but already was when it only had some 60 musicians on the beginning.
  14. One of Golden age's great! Faterh of David and Thomas, uncle of Randy. And exactly how many member has the London Philharmonic? Because the Boston Pops/Symphony, has some 100 and few musicians...
  15. The fact that Mr. Williams does works with some of the finest orchestras in the world, does not means that the ones form Hollywood's early days weren't better. Here you go with the quote:
  16. Mr. Williams grow up in the old days of the Studio System, and he has stated more than once that he misses it. He went on to say at least once, that on those days they had the finest orchestras in the country.
  17. someone should have told me that earlier this year
  18. Forgot to say that the Witches of Eastwick release here comes without the isolated audio track The only bonus is the film trailer. Is this the same for the other zone 2 releases of it?
  19. And no one will got all those awards again, simply because the studio system doesn't works the same way. Newman got all the musical direction credits at Fox, and got a number of Oscars that way.
  20. Couple of weeks ago I got the UK releae of Fiddler on the Roof, and the only extra is the audio comentary. Haven't checked it yet, but I'm sure Williams name must be mentioned on it. Hook, sadly, has no Williams related stuff  I want to get JFK, but haven't yet. Sabrina was just released around here recently. i love the film, but it looks like it has very few bonus stuff. I'll rent it one of this days and check it. I got Nixon for my father this Christmas, but I beleive that our release has no documentary at all. I'll watch that in a few weeks. Got Angela's Ashes earlier this month, but haven't had the time to watch it. I hoped that the makning of/interviews would have anything regarding Williams, wich they don't. You forgot Family Plot -- the making of has a marvelous segment with Williams on his music and on Hitchcock.
  21. Carla, my dear beloved wife, dont' quite sees it as a funny thing... But as someone once put it, that's only a small thing, if she finds the rest of me perfect
  22. Regarding Disney nominations and awards, many of those were from the days when the department, or the studio got the nominations, not the artist -- Korngold's first Oscar went in fact to the studio, not to him. And I guess, you're right... in a few years, Williams will be the most nominated composer ever!
