Back when movie making had real and genuine guts.
No pre sold TV rights. No demographics. No focus groups. No previews. No audience appreciation cards. No recutting due to some minority taking offence.
Just good - fucking good - and brave filmmaking.

I can surmise:  Disc 1 & 2 will be the main programes , episode wise, Disc 3 would be the new 30 minutes + of unheard music & alternates. Disc 4 is the Goldsmith re-recording using the actual sessions tapes remastered etc.

It's a good docu series, but also quite fatiguing in one sitting -- i.e. the complete lack of discipline in the recording studio, with all kinds of substances involved; for hour after hour, you basically scream at the screen for someone responsible to step in and take control. Too many sycophants around -- the absence of Brian Epstein is felt (and George Martin was far more passive than I thought)! That obviously gives the series narrative nerve too, frustrating as it is. Will they finish in time, and what is the end result? I was completely worn out by "Get Back" when I'd finished watching, though -- otherwise one of my favourite Beatles songs (need a break from listening to it now). It was played loads of times. But witnessing its creation was awesome.

Nice to see a few shots of my hero Alan Parsons in there (who looks 14!), although there were less than I had expected.

The first time I watched The Heiress I thought it was brilliant. So dark I couldn't believe it's a movie from 1949.

To reference a Scorsese film, I do have sympathy for Travis Bickle because it takes a while for him to be reduced to the kind of person who would plan a murder, and even longer (virtually the entire length of the film) to actually carry such a deed out. I think there was more to be made of Travis' normalcy early on, but still.

That's completely different to watching Goodfellas where the characters are already embroiled in organized crime from minute one of the film.

As long as there’s something there I can latch on to I’m good. Breaking Bad has Jesse, and that was enough for me. I stopped watching Mad Men after Season 4 cause there just wasn’t anything there to keep me interested, though I do want to go back and revisit it.

I just recently saw Uncut Gems and didn’t enjoy it for similar reasons.

    For sure.

But there's a difference between "less noble qualities" and the protagonist being a vile criminal and murderer from the outset.

I mean, I empathize tremendously with William Wallace and he straight-up mauls defenceless foes, but its still not the same as the kind of bloodshed we see in Goodfellas or The Irishman, or the Godfather sequels, or The Sopranos.

I empathize with Siegmund and Sieglinde's incestuous affair, and yet its not the same as the kind of sleaziness we see Once Upon a Time in America.

To use a different example, I empathize with a good Othello who ends-up murdering his wife after five whole acts of being prodded by Iago, or a TE Lawrence who takes three-hours of battling with megalomania, sadism and several misadventures to become the sort of person who can command a massacre. That as compared to the characters in most crime-dramas.

The only possible way that Redford would play the head of an intelligence agency would be if he or the agency were the villains or in this case both.

And do you really need to empathize with a character? There Will Be Blood is one of the greatest movies of the millennium, filled with pretty despicable characters

The current film is Clifford the Big Red Dog, although Home Sweet Home Alone is the preferable Debney score.

I never cared for SKYFALL, personally (the score, anyway, I like the film). But since that year (2012), there have been many fine TN scores that have secured their place in my collection -- BRIDGE OF SPIES, HE NAMED ME MALALA, THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE, VICTORIA & ABDUL, TOLKIEN and LET THEM ALL TALK.

    Wrong.
    Liszt did it first.
Many of Liszts avant- garde compositions weren't published until decades later.
But RW had access to them in manuscript form and undoubtedly recognized their innovations.
    But, it's not really important.
He is a great composer who built upon the work of another great composer.
    Like they all do!

bruce marshall got a reaction from Loert in What is the last piece of classical music you listened to?
    Oh yeah.
The ' Tristan' chord appears in Liszt work.
When Liszt gave sanctuary to RW when he was an outlaw, RW repaid the favor by stealing his ideas.
    What a guy!
    But it's all good.😄
