Much to the chagrin of the lead actors, it was scored by Hans Zimmer.

An intimate portrait of one man's (Jurassic Shark) quest to find his friend (Naïve Old Fart), on the unforgiving dune pastureland of the Outer Hebrides, off the west coast of mainland Scotland.

Mark Kermode hails it as "A triumph of the indomitable human spirit... But he really could've just mailed that CD."

I haven't found any review that really makes a case for that score.

Is Quartet just emptying the bottom drawer and hoping we won’t notice?

Quartet Records, in collaboration with Paramount Pictures, presents a remastered and expanded 2-CD deluxe edition of COP LAND, the cult soundtrack composed by Howard Shore in 1997 during one of the most creative periods of his career, following such classic scores as THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, SEVEN, M BUTTERFLY, ED WOOD, CRASH and LOOKING FOR RICHARD, among many others.

Written and directed by James Mangold, the film features an impressive cast, including Sylvester Stallone, Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel and Ray Liotta. Stallone plays a sheriff in a suburban New Jersey community populated by New York City police officers, who slowly discovers that the town is a front for mob connections and corruption.

Howard Shore composed a dramatic and intense score with fatalistic, heroic and emotional elements, showcasing his ability to elevate human conflicts to epic proportions through music.

The score for COP LAND was released on a 40-minute album by Milan Records in 1997, but it was far from complete. It strangely omitted the powerful and robust music composed for the end credits (“Back to Work” on our album), one of Shore’s most impressive compositions. The re-editing of the film and changes in the studio criteria led Shore to rewrite and adapt a large part of his score, of which an additional 30 minutes or so can be found in the bonus tracks section on the second disc. The original album included unique mixes and edits, so we have kept it intact and remastered.

Performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under the composer’s baton, this album has been painstakingly produced by Dan Goldwasser, mixed and mastered by Chris Malone, and entirely supervised and approved by Mr. Shore. The package includes an in-depth essay by film music writer Jeff Bond.

If only there was an update on the topic of this thread so this could stop. At least there will definitely be an update sometime next month in April (Cinema-con).

Boston didn't sell like hotcakes, either, though the program was bookended with film selections...

But, yeah, CMIYC and CE3K doesn't attract like Harry Potter and Star Wars.

Face it, guys, Williams is destined to go down in history as a "film composer," while his concert work will be there as a curiosity for some.

Behold that any way you like.

bruce marshall reacted to Tom in John Williams' Piano Concerto for Emmanuel Ax - Premieres Saturday, July 26, 2025
I know that I just need to move on, but is it really necessary for them to write "a new piano concerto by film composer John Williams?"  Are there a lot of other composers named John Williams with which people might get confused?  This man has written more hours of concert works (and performed concert works) that many, probably even most at this point, "nonfilm" composers.

Its 2026 Berlin.  Feel free to catch up anytime.

bruce marshall reacted to Edmilson in Which composer is "responsible" for the prevailing minimalism in dramatic film scores nowadays?
Affordable? Well, there's Michael Giacchino's son Mick, if you think your movie needs a Giacchino-like score. If you're going for a more John Powell-type, you could try Batu Sener or Anthony Willis, two of his padawans.

If you're a fan of Marco Beltrami, his helper Brandon Roberts could provide what you need. I mean, his score for Andor Season 2 was much more orchestral than Nicholas Brittell's for Season 1.

Then, there's those guys at Bear McCreary's studio, they sure can write fast and have done fantasy music for God of War and Percy Jackson.

Of course, since neither Giacchino, Powell, Beltrami or McCreary are your thing, you could try something even more old school. Horner's heir Simon Franglen has been doing some decent Horner impressions lately, if you want a Horner-like score, you can ask him.

Any of these people either have worked in Hollywood or have mentors with good connections, so your studio wouldn't be a big problem. But if you're willing to try a, say, more unusual choice, just hire whoever Jon Broxton or the IFMCA named "Discovery of the year" in the last 3 or 4 years. They'll probably be some foreign person who only worked in foreign movies, but hey, everyone gotta start somewhere. Didn't Marvel brought a dude from Egypt for the Moon Knight show?

Huh... I don't know how to break it to you, but... Trent Resznor and Atticus Ross are modern day film composers. And quite busy ones: they did the crappy Tron movie from last year.
