If Giacchino does become the favoured composer to do more Star Wars films, I would be satisfied knowing that Publicist was crying on a fan forum about slipping standards and how much he hated Giacchino. I wouldn't go so far as to say it was sado masochism, but there's some part of me that enjoys the suffering of those who, like Pub, are hurt by film music choices.

For anyone who is curious as to how @Bespin calculated this figure, he began by consulting the AFI's list of the top 100 film scores, then considered the Academy Award nominations, and finally, checked the SATURN nominees (because he's like that). Try it for yourself, and if you cannot seem to come up with a number after that, you haven't had enough to drink.

I don't believe anyone has called it the gold standard. I said I liked it better than Solo, others have merely stated they like it more than the criticism. Liking something and raising it up on a pedestal aren't the same thing. I like popcorn but I wouldn't call it a dinner. This is the danger of hyperbole for effect, you end up putting words in someone else's mouth. As you exaggerate your own comments, you end up exaggerating the comments of others.
 
No big deal, we all do it. I just wanted to clarify that my thoughts on it were what they were, and were not that.

Listening with good headphones yesterday at home, I did notice that in the cues with the big, booming bass drum, the bass drum does sort of overpower everything else going on.  However, I don't think this was a new mixing choice, I think that's the way Shawn Murphy recorded it

This makes sense given the nature of the film and score. The booming bass percussion is one of the things that always stood out with the score. Kind of a musical bump in the night type effect.
