It reminds me of an anecdote Conrad Pope told about some Oliver Stone film they worked on. The first thing they recorded was the main title and Stone loved it. Williams told Stone he thought take 3 was the best of the bunch, but Stone disagreed; take 1 was the best. Williams recognized what was really going on was that Stone still felt the buzz of excitement from hearing the music for the first time, and was attaching that feeling to the first take. So instead of arguing he just said, "Let's talk about it later"; and in the end they used take 3 because by that point Stone couldn't remember or tell the difference anyway.

You're actually able to hear that?

I would say, as was common in those days, a lot of histories most famous musicians and composers did not have degrees, and a lot of business was done by word of mouth, recommendations, and hand shakes. A degree wasn't overly important in arts. In addition, a lot of composers only spent a short amount of time in schools, usually quitting and just getting to work, once they realized that there is only so much you can get out of a classroom and and you really learn from experience, and also a great many teachers of composition are extremely narrow minded anyway, and students tend to get frustrated and bored.
 
I think if Williams doesn't get too interested in the topic, it was probably not very important/ didn't really make much of an impact on his music. You can really hear in his music that all his influences come from self study, rather than a method by a certain teacher.

Love this score, one of my favorites. But the album can be trimmed down a bit as is! 

Jerry is so great that I've sold or traded many scores that some consider his best. It's not that I DISLIKE these, just that I have lots of Jerry I like BETTER!

But, the first TRANSFORMERS is very popular and deservedly so.
Good themes and well crafted overall.

You know it's funny...
I saw this in first run. Loved it.
I remember thinking - when they free the whale- man"  I wish John Williams scored this; he would have knocked it out of the park."
Instead , we got the ok.cue from Lenny

The first Transformers score is excellent. Movie is great fun too, when the people stop talking and the action takes over.
