Note that when ordering directly from Dutton, you usually get sent items from a warehouse with moist issues - I've made them aware of this and they've acknowledged it's a problem, but the problem has not gone away. For example, when I ordered several Classic Film Score releases, several of them recently released, most of the staples holding the booklets together had started to become rusty, even with the shrink-wrap on! Other times, the back inlay paper has been very warped due to moist, and in a few cases has been covered in mould. Since Dutton doesn't seem interested in fixing the problem, I've stopped purchasing directly from them. I don't know if items are sent from another warehouse if ordering from another store, for example Presto Music. Perhaps someone could comment on this.

Okay, that's what I thought... That sticks out like a sore thumb and cannot be unheard.

And, unfortunately for me, I recently purchased the old release (which is awaiting shipment), specifically for the 'Close Encounters' suite...

So, it's true that it's hardly noticeable on the Dutton Vocalion stereo remaster?

    If so, I'll probably upgrade.

Oh I adore the movie too.  My comments were mostly referring to the score.  I can totally understand someone not liking the movie.  (I’ll still disagree, but that’s okay) But if someone can’t derive joy from a start to finish listen of the score to Superman the Movie, I submit their soul might somehow be incomplete, and they have my pity.

I did! I saw Superman* on its first release when I was 13!

That isn’t what’s happening at all. Notice this isn’t an Intrada-produced recording — otherwise it would say copyright Intrada on the back, like The Chairman did. But it says copyright Volta Music. What is Volta Music, you ask?

Wonder why Intrada didn’t have to run a Kickstarter campaign to rerecord Tiomkin’s The Old Man and the Sea? “Intrada and Volta Music present…”:

The Tiomkin Estate is substantially funding recordings of his music, to preserve his legacy. (I’m pretty certain they rescued Intrada’s initial Kickstarter campaign for Dial M for Murder as well — for a while it really didn’t look like it was going to make it.) It’s a pity other composer estates don’t have the same resources, but I can’t blame Tiomkin’s family for wanting to keep his work alive.

You do know they could release more than one title right?

They usually do image clues just for one title though, right?

I see Rabin did BB2 with no score release, so more likely that one I suppose.

Several FB comments pointing towards Bad Boys, which LLL did in 2007.

So unless there's something I'm misunderstanding... another reissue? They usually only do clues like this for huge releases.

Anyone know if this has been a long-gestating passion project for Spielberg? It seemed to come out of nowhere.

Anyway, even if it wasn't of personal interest to him, his name is being used heavily in the movie's marketing as a draw, and I think he knows he needs to knock this one out of the park to get back some of his lustre as a hitmaker.

It is hard to imagine that this will end up being in the top 5 Spielberg movies of all time.  However, it should at least be solid and have a kick-ass score.  I will take it.

You are correct in your statements pertaining to the Trumpet section as i had always noticed this Mattmane.
I do think they improve during the latter part of the album though, particularly during the far superior (IMO) version of the End Titles with the Timpani balance taking more of an active role (especially during the closing fanfare don't you think?)
Recording wise, it was one of the few albums that wasn't mixed by the RCA team (excluding George Korngold of course), so out of Gerhardt's recordings this was always the one that lost orchestral performance clarity. Too much treble primarily.

    Agreed!

I'm most familiar with Gerhardt's TESB recording, and love its great energy and unique couplings.

bruce marshall reacted to Jurassic Shark in What are the "definitive" recordings of JW's Star Wars concert pieces?
Both the Gerhardt and the Skywalker recordings have horrible solo performances, so it's really close to a toss-up who's worst. The Skywalker soloist sounds very insecure, like he's going to soil his pants.

I like the soloist on the Kojian album.

The OST version sounds more convincing, coming from a brass player. There are intonation and articulation issues littered all throughout the Gerhardt recordings. And some players simply have bad tone. "National Philharmonic" actually isn't very well known. On the other hand, LSO and their brass are both legendary.
