bruce marshall reacted to Yavar Moradi in LLL:OCTOPUSSY – 40th ANNIVERSARY: EXPANDED/REMASTERED LIMITED EDITION (2-CD SET)
I enjoy AVTAK, but TLD is way, way better and actually my personal favorite Barry Bond score (even though I acknowledge OHMSS as his greatest).
Yavar

bruce marshall reacted to Andy in James Horner's SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES (1983) - NEW! 2024 Intrada Expanded Edition
Ordered because I adore this score. Hoping Chris Malone could squeeze a little more clarity out of an already great sounding recording.

I'm not signing unless @Thor does!

bruce marshall reacted to GerateWohl in The Official Star Wars Expanded Score Petition Thread
I understand the intention. Still I am more interested into complete editions of the prequels and the sequels as there is much more music missing.

Original Petition:
Link to petition: https://chng.it/M95VFmdPbv
We're gonna need to give this petition as much exposure as we possibly can. Share it anywhere you frequent where you talk about film music and Star Wars!
If we can get at least this much accomplished, it becomes much more likely that Disney will allow Matessino to do the rest of the Star Wars scores, as well as the Indy scores, too!

LA-LA LAND ALERT!!!
JAMES BOND SHIPPING UPDATE
However, OCTOPUSSY is experiencing an unexpected manufacturer delay and will begin shipping out on Jan 30. Any orders containing OCTOPUSSY will begin shipping on Jan 30, unless we get them earlier than that, in which case they'll start shipping as soon as they arrive. We apologize for the additional wait.

bruce marshall reacted to Mr. Hooper in Jon Burlingame Article on "Wearing Somebody Else's Underwear"
I'm not a fan of repurposing film music, and found the use of Herrmann's music in 'The Artist' distracting, wholly unnecessary, and self-indulgent on the part of the director.
Even if the idea is to pay homage and draw a parallel, as in Scorsese's use in 'Casino' of Delerue's 'Thème de Camille' from Godard's 'Le Mépris', it just seems disrespectful to the composer to cut and paste his work.

bruce marshall reacted to Bayesian in Ridley Scott's NAPOLEON (Martin Phipps, 2023)
I love this film. Seen it twice already in theaters and I'm front row center for the 4-hr director's cut when it hits Apple TV+ (and, please please please God, 4K blu-ray). The soundtrack has similarly impressed me -- Borodino is a goddamned masterpiece, for instance, and I hope Phipps gets recognized for his work by the Academy. I'm so happy this FYC exists!
What I've come to learn to appreciate about Phipps' approach to scoring this film (after my second viewing and, now, after listening to the FYC) is that he managed to create an epic sound that is truly different from the epic sound of Zimmer and his factory-farm clones. It's a considerably more intelligent sound, one that rewards close listening, one that has range and multivariate character. And it's an up-to-date sound -- you couldn't mistake it for any other decade than the present one. No pastiche (except perhaps the diagetic stuff). No overprocessed synth instruments or overpowering synth drums. And no one-trick-pony shtick like, say, Goransson and his violin that sounds like a cat being tortured.

bruce marshall reacted to Jay in John Powell's MIGRATION (2023)
I listened to the OST album on Spotify this morning and I loved it!
This was my first time hearing the song as part of the album, and I liked that too! I had assumed it was an original, new song, it was funny to realize it was a cover of the Destiny's Child song!
I look forward to seeing this movie to learn the context for the score.. though as I type that, I realize I wanted to do the same for Still, The Call of the Wild, HTTYD3, Ferdinand, Pan, HTTYD2, Rio, Mars Needs Moms, and Bolt, but never did!

Indy marries Marion at the end.
If nothing else, it earns points from me for that alone.

bruce marshall reacted to Thor in The Five Sacred Albums
Ah, the classic "desert island" challenge!
Five is insanely difficult. A few years ago, I selected 144 essential albums in my life (a challenge given to me by someone else), and even that was a tricky limitation. Can be viewed in this thread over on FSM. However, if someone put a gun to my head, then maybe these at the present time:
Supertramp - Even in the Quietest Moments
John Williams - Jurassic Park
Hans Zimmer - Beyond Rangoon
Vangelis - Oceanic
Jean Michel Jarre - Houston/Lyon
But that hurt. Had to omit several essential albums by artists to which I have a completist relationship, even. Like Pink Floyd, The Alan Parsons Project, Rammstein, Danny Elfman, Elliot Goldenthal etc. etc.

“Most imminently there's a piano concerto to be written for Emanuel Ax ("I finished the first movement yesterday")”

bruce marshall reacted to King Mark in The Most UnWilliams like Score/Piece?
I dunno Fablemans kind of sounds unWilliams. The main theme is like Alan Silvestri in Contact mode

bruce marshall reacted to Naïve Old Fart in David Arnold's DIE ANOTHER DAY - NEW! 2CD Complete La-La Land Edition
QOS is Arnold's best Bond score.
It's probably my second favourite Arnold score.

bruce marshall reacted to A. A. Ron in David Arnold's DIE ANOTHER DAY - NEW! 2CD Complete La-La Land Edition
I don't think I'd call QOS "Arnold's best" Bond score, but I do really love it.

bruce marshall reacted to GerateWohl in This Reminds Me of That
Calling it hate is too strong.
And one thing that I dislike much much more, than a movie theme reminding me of another theme is, if I listen to a score and the music is just meandering across chords in the simpliest ossible way (e.g. something like a C-E-G-E-C-E-G-E-C-E-G-E ostinato) and there is no theme, no melody at all, no interesting textures, just these chords, sometimes even just getting repeated after the third chord change. Maybe even just tonica, subdominant, dominant, tonica plus no melody. The blandness of such music makes me agressive. That is why I have such a problem with Hans Zimmer's music. He often does something like that.

bruce marshall reacted to Thor in The 16th Annual JWFan Awards - The Best Scores and Films of 2023!
Currently in the process of sampling my way through thousands of scores. At number 1246 now, only 6 have made it to my short list out of those. Thankfully, I've listened regularly throughout the year, so can skip some. Before I delved into the document of titles, I already had some 50 titles on another short list. Phew!

bruce marshall reacted to Yavar Moradi in James Horner's SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES (1983) - NEW! 2024 Intrada Expanded Edition
Nope, it was complete:
https://store.intrada.com/s.nl/it.A/id.9969/.f
The reason the Horner score (and the two other Disney Horner scores Intrada premiered around the same time) wasn't released complete is that for its premiere release on album, Horner himself was involved with Intrada in crafting an "original album".
