I'm not sure I agree with Nick's reading alltogether, but I do find that yours "filmmaker gets spat out by the system, recludes to the shadows" is probably not it either. All the evidence is - quite apart from excerpts of the making-ofs that had been edited in a misleading way and uploaded to YouTube - that Jackson had never been in a better humour than when making The Hobbit. Just because some of us don't like the movie, it's important not to project those feelings unto the making of the movie itself.
 
The other famous case of a filmmaker who took a long hiatus from directing is David Lean, not long after a group of critics lambasted his Ryan's Daughter within earshot. But even there, when you really read you find out there's much more to it than Lean sulking: he tried to get films off of the ground - and even got pretty darn close with Mutiny on the Bounty - but they didn't come together. George Lucas is something quite different, because ever since 1976 he's a producer that sometimes directs: not a director who sometimes produces.
 
I think there's good grounds to read Jackson's reluctance to direct live-action due to the death of his cinematographer - as genuine. It rings true moreso than  "The Hobbit beat the will out of him."

I just want A-game Spielberg blocking. It's what gives his movies the real depth.

The runtime must simply be enough to express and  twist and turn the themes of the story, provided that hack Koepp remembered to have them.

It's ok to be wrong.

i dislike ghostwriters. i don't dislike multiple cooks if the information is actually there, but it does make it annoying to classify albums in a hard drive or to fix their metadata.
