  1. "My tribute goes to the other nominees and in particular the esteemed John Williams" Classy.
  2. There seems to be a genuine mutual respect between Williams and Dudamel. I don't remember hearing Williams palling around with the orchestra's former conductor, Esa-Pekka Salonen.
  3. "Members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra" performed on SCHINDLER'S LIST and SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. The Boston Pops is comprised of "members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra," so... Does that count?
  4. Very cool! I hope it goes well. Doyle in concert is a whole lot of fun: I was lucky enough to go to the star-studded LSO concert in 2007 in London. Hearing some CINDERELLA live would be a highlight. TJH
  5. The film and score are an absolute delight! The film is pretty straight forward: no revisionism, no undo darkness. The score matches the film perfectly in tone and energy and, as far as I can tell, plays through 95% of the film and basically unedited, except for the expected "source" music of waltzes and polkas for the Ball. I have to disagree with Thor: These cues are entire musical pieces in and of themselves and shouldn't be weeded out of the listening experience. Doyle's natural melodic writing is in top form here and Williams has got his work cut out for him to top this with STAR WARS for my personal "favorite of the year." Doyle fans will also enjoy the clever musical cameo of a song from a previous Doyle/Branagh film. TJH Edit: Available for streaming on Google Play Music All Access.
  6. The Marsalis recording was news to me! Found it as a digital download at presto classical.co.UK. Only $3 and worth every penny!
  7. Anyone catch Branford Marsalis and the Eugene Symphony perform this last night? Work kept me away, unfortunately; it's one of my favorite pieces. TJH
  8. In the Herrmann biography, Gerhardt is quoted as saying he was very apprehensive about the legendarily cranky composer seeing what the conductor had done to add a small transition between cues on the CITIZEN KANE recording. Herrmann approved it, adding only an indication for the orchestra. I think it could be very likely Gerhardt repeated a bar or two for good effect without Williams noting it in the score. I'm generally a fan of all Charles Gerhardt film recordings and think he did a lot for film music at the time. TJH
  9. yes, i don't buy digital releases. Sad to never have heard Williams' Harp and Oboe concerti, since they were released as digital only.
  10. This was broadcast along with quite a few others last week during the Detroit Symphony's webcast. John Williams wishes Leonard Slatkin happy birthd:
  11. I have heard the pop version but assumed incorrectly it was produced by another artist using the themes, as was popular in the day. I think a band called Meco did it with all three STAR WARS films. Maybe I should have clarified the ORCHESTRATION sounds unlike John Williams. TJH
  12. I don't hear many notes that Williams actually wrote in that version of CLOSE ENCOUNTERS! Yikes... TJH
  13. I wonder if the liner notes will include a story I read once about how Spielberg was seriously disappointed with the music to 1941. (His oft-told story of playing clarinet on the recording to make it more "ragged" seems to be putting a happy face on it.) I swear I read an account in a book at my high school library but that's as much info as I can remember. TJH
  14. The concerto as previously recorded always came off a bit stiff and unemotional. This new recording fixes those impressions. Well done!
  15. I haven't finished the entire second hour of the broadcast, but I don't see the LINCOLN music listed in the program. I'd love to hear this version of "With Malice Towards None" you're talking about. The mp3 I made of the cello concerto came out really well. These streams are getting very high quality! TJH Oops, nevermind... Just got to it after HARRY POTTER. It IS good! TJH
  16. Have to say I really like the revisions to the final movement! Very powerful finale. The opening changes seem, as mentioned, to reflect a little MEMOIRS. Why not? It was a highly successful collaboration.
  17. Too bad it's a Monday. Looks to be a very similar program to the one he conducted with the Eugene Symphony a couple of years ago. Good to have him back in Oregon, though.
  18. Hey! This is perfect! Thanks for the art. TJH Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
  19. I AM NOT ASKING FOR THE MUSIC/MP3! But I am looking for the user-made album art that someone might have made for this piece. Thanks, TJH
