Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them 5-film series
mrbellamy replied to Bilbo's topic in General Discussion
They did really seem to hit it off when they were promoting Prisoner of Azkaban and I think he does have a natural affinity with her writing style, particularly her sense of humor. I can see why he'd be interested, and I do think that Hollywood can definitely use someone like him making tentpole/genre films at the moment. And yeah, while I still don't think Williams is particularly likely, I think this news at least keeps him in the conversation. I kind of feel like if it ends up being a Potter vet, though, then it'll be either Doyle or Desplat.- 3,311 replies

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them 5-film series
mrbellamy replied to Bilbo's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, Finke's definitely legit. I'm just somewhat surprised that he's actually going for it since he's talked about wanting to do something smaller after Gravity (though that's also what he said after Children of Men...) but at any rate, I guess chances for a Williams score are slightly higher.- 3,311 replies

I think this one qualifies: And two more from Williams: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRktoNlAeMs Also maybe not so much what you're looking for, but I watched the movie Chicken With Plums the other day and this struck me as a rather "emotional setpiece":

I think the LOTR scores are Howard Shore's very best work, my favorite of the 21st century, and an obvious landmark in film music history, arguably the most recent work to hit such a high standard as to merit "all-time great" discussion. John Williams has surpassed them over his career with a handful of his scores, but I'm not totally sure I'd count Star Wars among them. They're close enough for it not to matter IMO, and at any rate, both are well-deserving of their acclaim. I've always been a little surprised that the LOTR scores have as many detractors as they do on here.

The Spielberg Oner: One Scene, One Shot
mrbellamy replied to mrbellamy's topic in General Discussion
I agree with that. Still, it's the first time I've seen anybody really go into this at length, in regards to Spielberg. -
Cool video essay (with examples) illustrating Spielberg's frequent use of covering an entire scene in a single, complex master shot, and comparing his shots favorably to more celebrated but less subtle examples of the technique: http://vimeo.com/94628727 http://vimeo.com/94684923 http://vimeo.com/94684922 One of my favorite Spielberg techniques and it's pretty cool to see so many of them compiled together like this. I like how the narrator mentions the "immersive" quality of these shots too, and how they even help in suspending disbelief for his genre films. I think it's one of many secrets of Spielberg's success as a filmmaker and it's true that a lot of modern filmmakers do tend to either under or overestimate its power.

Who is the most overrated film composer in recent history?
mrbellamy replied to Ricard's topic in General Discussion
That's pretty much what "overrated" means on the Internet. -
Giacchino -NOT- "working alongside" Williams on Star Wars 7 score

So anyway, I went off on one this one time...
mrbellamy replied to Quintus's topic in General Discussion
Technically, that IS the old style. Greer Garson was allowed to go on and on for five-and-a-half minutes in the 40s... Don't forget the standing ovation -
The Sixth Sense was actually Shyamalan's third film. A film called Praying With Anger was his debut but didn't receive distribution and isn't available anywhere as far as I can tell, but Wide Awake is easy to find and a very sweet drama about a Catholic schoolboy coming of age after his grandfather's death. Very unlike the rest of his films and maybe a bit too earnest, but worth seeing from what I remember.

I thought the first one was okay but a chore to get through. Can't bring myself to watch the sequels.

The people who would tear it apart would be mostly male nerds whose sole raison d'etre is to bicker over fucking subtitles of genre movies. That's really all I meant by it. Is there anybody else in the world who complains about movie titles, anyway?

This is brilliant. Jim Cummings reads Darth Vader dialogue as Winnie-the-Pooh (and Daine Jir as Darkwing Duck) --

I think it's awesome because the movie's awesome. You can't take it out of context, it just brings to mind all that great imagery, dialogue, sound, and music, making you forget that there is really no other variation on "______ Strikes Back" that doesn't sound lame as hell.

"The Empire Strikes Back" is probably the corniest of the six, by today's standards. If they announced a similar title for VII, people would tear it apart. It's like one step removed from "Luke Saves the Day."

Oh cool, thanks for sharing! Love these DGA talks, I just watched their Coppola retrospective from 2011 the other night, actually (with Paul Thomas Anderson, Catherine Hardwicke, and David O. Russell interviewing Coppola.) Incidentally, he mentioned Lucas toward the end of it, saying: "When you make a film, you just learn so much about it, and if it's personal, it means you're going to learn also about yourself. Then I had the interesting accident of making The Godfather which totally changed my life and put me in a position I never imagined I was really gonna be in, but then little by little, I wasn't writing those personal films and I had always hoped that if I could make one big success and have all this money, then I could just spend that money making films, like *George* always tells me he's gonna do. George Lucas is a very interesting experimental filmmaker and he's gonna shock everybody because he's got the dough. He's just gonna go off and make a film someday. He has enormous talent. Making big movies that do what they do is one thing, but he has a very exotic side of him which I would love to see. He promises me he's going to do it and I believe him." Still waiting for that.- 1,974 replies

Hmm, what do you mean by that? I think a lot of kids are kind of perplexed by it, though in different ways. Personally, I did see it very early but it was never one of my big childhood favorites, outside of the "Sorcerer's Apprentice" segment. I didn't find my appreciation for it until later on.

Yeah, but what Shark was saying is that composition, camera movement, and lenses are still aspects of cinematography, even though the director will often have a firm opinion on such things and work with the cinematographer to incorporate them into the overall mise-en-scene. They're not exclusive to either department.
