By the way, I wonder when they're going to make David Lynch a Disney Legend

Actually funnily enough, another piece that you could classify as "stealth Disney" is "Soundings" which he wrote for the debut of the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

We all remember the great Disney villains. Maleficent. Cruella De Vil. Richard Nixon.

Hollywood Pictures and Touchstone Pictures are companies created by, run by, and entirely owned by Disney.  These companies were a way for Disney to release R-rated movies since they never do that under Disney branding.  Nixon absolutely counts as projects that John Williams scored for the Disney company.

War Horse, Lincoln, and if he had been able to do Bridge of Spies, he's doing those scores FOR Dreamworks, but Dreamworks was not distributing their films themselves any more by that point, hence the deal for Disney (through their Touchstone brand) to distribute them.  Disney had no creative input on those, they were just distributing what Dreamworks gave them.

Likewise, the Star Wars sequel scores and Indiana Jones 5 area films he's scoring for Disney.  Sure he only worked with the directors and maybe the head of Lucasfilm (Kathleen Kennedy), but Disney execs could still meddle with those films (and very likely did) in a way that they could not do with those Dreamworks ones.

There’s bound to be tons of fun in there. I’ve seen some of them and I have an even more daunting version of that same set, with 200(!) movies over 50 discs!

From your set, start with Van Nuys Blvd.  1979 Vansploitation movie. Think American Graffiti with Van Culture.

Anything made by Crown International is worth a watch. All of their movies seem made for the Drive-In.

    From your list:

    1. The Babysitter - 1969 b/w old dad lusts for teasing babysitter.  Tame by today’s standards.  Fairly entertaining.

    2. Best Friends - hippie existentialist film with kids driving around in a Winnebago.

    3. Blood Mania - Whacked out sleazy melodrama. Over the top. Want to see the woman who played Greedo in Star Wars topless? Here’s your film.  Good one.

    12. The Hearse - slow, moody, atmospheric.

    17. Malibu Beach - good clean fun beach movie. With boobies. Thanks to the dog who goes around stealing bikini tops.  I’d also recommend Crown’s Beach Girls if this is your thing.

    18. Malibu High- the most deceiving movie poster ever. What looks like a typical beach romp is actually a nihilistic girl gone bad crime movie. It’s hilarious.  And you get to hear the theme music from The People’s Court in a whacky foot chase.

    20. The Pick Up - saw it but a little mean spirited for my taste.

    22. The Pom Pom Girls - OK movie, thought it might be more fun

    27. The Teacher - typical hot for teacher trash. Not bad

    30. Trip With Teacher - a lot like the Pick Up

    31. Van Nuys Blvd. - Winner!

I seem to remember this one has sort of a mambo based score.  It’s garbage. But somehow fun to watch, despite its icky undertones.

The Netflix one is a good time for modern day trash.

You’re not the first person to mention both of these scores.  What a weird era where softcore films would get scores people talk about 50 years later.

Ah, OK. So not any of the two I mentioned. This one has a Robert O. Ragland score, I see - mostly famous for GRIZZLY and Q, but really underrated composer.

So I actually have had this box set for years:

But I still have not watched a single film from it. I guess I never knew where to start. Maybe this thread will finally give me an excuse to just try them all, unless someone has a favorite from this list:

Thanks for the comments, and the correction on the HEIDI game, Mr. Bellamy. I think I was just going by the old Jeff Eldridge buyer's guide on that one, as the liner notes on my old Label X release are fairly skimpy.

Just finished listening to the whole series and agree with the above! Thanks a lot, Thor.

#1 favorite discovery was the "Moment of Decision" prologue, you hyped it up in your intro and it didn't disappoint. I'm definitely converted to the cause of an Alcoa Premiere box set. Love that Tammy Grimes theme too, and I wish I could see Inside the Movie Kingdom!

I'm actually not sure I'd ever gotten around to "Scherzo for Today" from the NBC News pieces either? Or it's been awhile but that's a fun one. This was also a reminder for me that I gotta finally watch those Amazing Stories episodes....I guess part of me has always liked knowing there were still two more Spielberg/Williams collabs just sitting out there.

One non-Williams piece of trivia I wanna nitpick was about the Heidi Game. You said that it went into "overtime" which implies the game was tied and Heidi interrupted who won (which still probably would have made US football fans really mad) but it was even funnier than that. The game was standard but just ran a little long into Heidi's premiere, and since it appeared the Oakland Raiders were going to lose, anyway, it might not have caused such a ruckus...except in those final 61 seconds on the clock that Heidi covered up, the Raiders unpredictably scored two touchdowns and won. You probably already know this but that's what made it extra crazy.

Anyway, late to the party but superb. As a JWFan for so many years it was kind of touching in a way to finally listen to you with all this runway on a subject you've always been frustrated isn't one of the bedrocks of this forum  really appreciate you collecting all of this and sharing. I'm sure I will be listening again, especially to help enhance my reading of the big JW biography next year.

I'm glad I was able to listen on Google Podcasts in its dying days....it's the only app that had Celluloid Tunes, I guess because it works differently than other podcast catchers. I will miss it! But it made it slightly more convenient to download the show and save for the future

mrbellamy reacted to Jay in NEW book by Frank Lehman - The Skywalker Symphonies: Musical Storytelling in Star Wars
The happy news I cryptically alluded to last week is now something I can make official: I just signed a book contract with OUP for 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘬𝘺𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘬𝘦𝘳 𝘚𝘺𝘮𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘦𝘴: 𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘳 𝘞𝘢𝘳𝘴!   It's a book it feels like I've been writing in my head for a long, long time -- since middle school, kinda? And unless Williams somehow returns to write another entry in the series, I'm treating it a chance to provide a properly 𝘴𝘺𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘤 investigation into these scores, all nine of them.   Even Rise of Skywalker?? 𝘌𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 Rise of Skywalker!   My hope is this book does some justice to the complexity, challenge, and sheer magic of this music.   Now, back to the grindstone!   https://www.facebook.com/Falstaft/posts/pfbid0L6wUjeDDxj6AmhwHh1f9obrVMJfYbPx4GJM8YaEWiZtqxwp37A88monPFVDxBQ26l

mrbellamy got a reaction from Yavar Moradi in What was your first encounter with Jerry Goldsmith?
Had to be Dennis the Menace. That one definitely stuck out.

My 90s and 00s were actually quite Goldsmith-less otherwise tbh. I know I watched Innerspace, Mulan, and Looney Tunes: Back in Action but I didn't really recall the music so much, he wasn't someone I explored even in my teens as a burgeoning film score geek. I really learned about Goldsmith almost entirely as a young adult. I didn't even recognize the Gremlins theme when I finally got around to checking out the movie some years ago. I've still never seen Secret of NIMH or Small Soldiers and was never a Star Trek kid.

Besides Dennis, the other Goldsmith pieces that bring me nostalgia are his Universal logo and Fanfare for Oscar, which I really miss hearing on nomination morning nowadays. I've actually taken to watching the video of him conducting it on YouTube now before they announce it. I also remember instantly loving the brief Patton reference from John Williams's Oscar tribute to film music at the time. But took me years to finally get around to the film and score.

Of course. My John Williams fandom will never die. Even not counting all the mysterious music that has never been heard, there is a ton of Williams music already available I still have yet to hear, or I'm unfamiliar with having only listened once or twice. I've already had the experience many times of scores I think I know well but I hear cues with new ears that never quite registered before. That will continue. But there ain't no Williams score like a new Williams score, no matter where it ranks!

Beating a dead horse but I'll take whatever I can get. I don't especially need more franchise blockbuster scores either, after the decade he just gave us and considering he seems over it. But a third Jurassic could be something. I would also be happy with another WWII era drama.

The MOST exciting thing would be an original film in an unexpected genre with an unexpected director, but I'm completely at peace with that never happening again and have been for years. Overall even though we still have more to hear from his oeuvre as a whole, for my own sanity I'm going along assuming that we now have John Williams's complete filmography, weird as it is to say. The only real hope I'm allowing myself is for Spielberg to eventually get going on something and just see what happens.
