Sharkissimo reacted to Nick Parker in Star Wars is better than everything
And considering every second of IV is a character moment, no wonder it's the best!

I like this idea. Five Easy Pieces in space.

Sharkissimo reacted to TownerFan in SCORE: Presumed Innocent
Speaking of Presumed Innocent, I found this on YouTube:
Very nice.

I absolutely love this piece! This one's only slightly over 3 minutes long, but I think it's one of the most creative, fun, and exciting pieces from the Star Wars prequels. The orchestration is pretty complex too, with many odd percussions, the orchestra producing unusual, almost alien-sounding noises.
My favorite part is from 2:30 to the end, when the orchestra mimicks the giant hammers coming down. Just heart-poundingly fun and awesome.
Too bad it was butchered up in the movie....
What's your opinion on this piece?

Between this piece, Jango's Escape, and Zam the Assassin, Star Wars Episode II Attack of the Clones boasts some impressive and unforgettable standalone action pieces!

Sharkissimo reacted to Disco Stu in Solo: A Star Wars Story (Ron Howard 2018)
I would agree if it was a Michael K. Williams on-camera performance with make-up. The idea of that character as mocap CGI with some weird alien design doesn't excite me at all.

Sharkissimo reacted to Falstaft in THE ADVENTURES OF HAN - 2018 John Williams theme for Solo: A Star Wars Story
I agree: melodically, it feels more like an outgrowth of "Searching," and in "The Adventures of Han," it initially sounds like a contrasting middle section for that theme (though retrospectively, it's perhaps more of a free episode, as it does not return IIRC). Interestingly, Powell treats it as a thematic continuation (or contrasting B section) of the main "Heroic" leitmotif -- not "Searching"-- on at least one occasion, near the start of "Corellia Chase."
Notice how it occupies the same tonality at the start (I/F => V/Bb), and its mere proximity to the "Heroic" leitmotif brings out some of its structural affinities with that theme. I don't know the score well enough yet to say if he highlights its connections with "Searching," but I wouldn't be surprised if that happens too.
It's details like this that are making me appreciate Powell's score even more; his manipulations of Williams's material are (with a perhaps a few exceptions) remarkably compelling and compositionally assured.

Sharkissimo got a reaction from Not Mr. Big in Star Wars Disenchantment
He's been inculcated with a rigid set of beliefs and scripts to run through that make him impervious to any of our attempts at engaging with him. .
I've spent some time watching those anti-Last Jedi/Rian Johsnon/Disney/Kathleen Kennedy Youtube videos, and lord is it depressing. It's really its own hermetically-sealed little world. The alt-lite/neo-reactionary assumptions about the state of Western culture are an integral part, and if you don't share those, it's like listening to babble.

Sharkissimo reacted to Unlucky Bastard in Star Wars Disenchantment
If only Bette Davis was alive and a young woman at 25 playing Rey. She could breathe real smoke life, nuance and powerful emotion into such a dull character. Daisy has nice abs, but lacks the screen presence to carry these movies like a real screen legend could.

We need to go Beneath-the-Planet-of-the-Apes-ending on this thread's ass.

Sharkissimo reacted to Holko in Star Wars Disenchantment
With the Last Jedi, I think we can all agree nobody would have a problem with only that. It's the insane vocal minority's constant accusations of Disney having evil agendas and the ridiculous hyperbole of their childhoods getting destroyed and so on, and stating these over and over again that "normal" people take issue with.
Senselessly extreme reactions cause extreme counterreactions.

Sharkissimo got a reaction from Brónach in John Powell's SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY (2018) - Deluxe Edition release coming November 2020
It's the Chris Clemmensen Cult of the Melody. Film music fans who place an unreasonably high premium on hummable thematic material (and by extension its author/s) at the expense of other considerations, like texture/orchestration, harmony, diegetic role, rhythm, form, development of said thematic material.
Talking about variations development, I love this little motive that Powell derives from Williams's Searching Theme. He takes its characteristic semitonal trill figure, and then sets its standard A minor harmony through David Lewin's SLIDE operation, arriving on an uncanny Ab major. In a SLIDE, the fifth (A-E) literally 'slides' down a semitone to Ab-Eb, while the third (C) is sustained. It's a distinctly un-Williams device (I associate it more with composers like Horner, JNH, Goldenthal and Zimmer) but it's a welcome (and perhaps overdue) addition to Star Wars' harmonic landscape.
Another occurrence slightly later in the same cue:
Am - F/A - F#m

The only one of the ones I listed that’s interesting in any way! I kinda love that movie, though. Fascinating trainwreck.
I find this quite funny coming from a Giacchino megafan, the milquetoast “surface-level” composer that Disney loves to hire!
I like quite a bit of his output but I couldn’t resist
