Sharkissimo reacted to Quintus in Are there now more LotR/Tolkien fans in residence at JWFan than there are John Williams fans?
A turtleneck 65 million years in the knitting.

I keep getting redirected to this Tolkien subforum, but then my computer crashes. Stupid Windows 95.

Sharkissimo reacted to Jay in Howard Shore's The Desolation Of Smaug (Hobbit Part 2)
I prefer DOS. Never understand why the HTTYD score was soooooooooo hyped around here. I mean it's good, and I like it, but it was treated like the greatest thing since sliced bread....

Sharkissimo reacted to Doug Adams in Howard Shore's The Desolation Of Smaug (Hobbit Part 2)
Any score that uses chord extensions in this day and age is ok by me! It's amazing how rare that is anymore.
It's a genuinely lovely score. Lyrical, coherent, and elegant.

Sharkissimo reacted to Damien F in Howard Shore's The Desolation Of Smaug (Hobbit Part 2)
I'm seeing very unflattering comments on an Irish movie forum about the score, some by people who usually have a very good insight into films.
I posted my defence of the score but I hope this isn't representative of the general public's opinion of it How anyone can think the score is pedestrian and generic is just beyond me.
Is this a lose-lose situation? If a composer writes a highly memorable thematic orchestral score nowadays, it'll probably be criticised for being too "in your face". If the score is a little more subtle in its application of its themes like DOS, people complain it is generic and bland??

Sharkissimo reacted to publicist in What Is The Last Film You Watched? (Older Films)
HOOK's problems are not bad special effects. Remaking the story while staying far away from the leaden all-star bullshit of Spielberg's version would be the only solution. HOOK is unsalvageable.

Sharkissimo got a reaction from Quintus in JOHN WILLIAMS BRONZE SCULPTURE
What about a John Williams jack-in-the-box (john-in-the-box)?

Sharkissimo reacted to Dixon Hill in Are there now more LotR/Tolkien fans in residence at JWFan than there are John Williams fans?
Can't agree about the theoretical stuff as therein lies one of the key sources of inexhaustible fascination and enjoyment from music, no matter its age... unless of course you don't go in for analysis of music, which I can sympathize if not identify with.
As for the rest, I'm sorry to say I agree. And even when there's an actual current score to discuss, the thread is dominated by disappointment and griping. Oh well. 2015 will be here soon and things will pick up.

Sharkissimo reacted to Bilbo in Are there now more LotR/Tolkien fans in residence at JWFan than there are John Williams fans?
I didn't think it was possible for the words "Balfe" and "excellent" to appear together in the same sentence! Now that I've seen it I'm still not sure that they should. :/

I wouldn't be surprised if Shore never works with PJ again after The Hobbit EEs are all done

Sharkissimo reacted to BloodBoal in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (JJ Abrams 2015)
God, no. This was one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life. It's the only movie for which I considered walking out of the theater before it was over.

Sharkissimo got a reaction from 0Kelvin in John Wilson is a JW fan
Do you ever browse the internet to keep tabs on your fans?
I can barely switch on a computer, let alone Google! [laughs] Many younger composers and students often ask me... No look, I'll drop the act. This antediluvian image I've helped cultivate for myself is something of a lie, I guess [laughs]. The truth is that I have an unhealthy addiction to social media. Around about 7 years ago I registered on a forum dedicated to me - the 'John Williams Fan Network' or 'JWFan' for short. Sounds incredibly egocentric, I know, but I did it only after pressure from my wife. Since then I've become what's known as a 'top poster'; but no-one knows who I really am. Probably for the better!
That'll keep them guessing.
I hope so.

Sharkissimo got a reaction from Ludwig in Unique "Williams-isms"?
The key dissonance in that cue in the use of chiming major 7ths and minor 9ths.
Very similar to Szell's theme in MARATHON MAN, along with the B pedal point.
Also.
