Entertainment made for children should never be this soaked in meta-irony.  This is clearly for adults.... which makes it even more off-putting.

Oh, I understand completely. It still sounds somewhat jarring to me. I got used both from the 1984 film and the Dune 2 game. But I really can't fault the filmmakers for it

The pronunciation of the word in the new movie is the same as Herbert's and how it is pronounced in Finnish, which seems to be origin of the word. It didn't come out of nowhere

I should have been clearer. Sure, the early Monkeys were lo-res style (though always 16-bit sound, if we want to get technical). The third game has a cartoonish look that looks more like a comic book than a typical game of its time, and the later ones (especially Escape, but to a lesser extent also Tales) have an ugly 3D design. And the games themselves are intentionally anachronistic, too. Yet I accept the music as *pirate* music, because (like the games) despite all its goofiness and stylistic excursions, it feels like its heart is in the right pirate-y place, something I never felt with POTC (score or film).
 
With POTC, it's both the rock idiom and the sledgehammer for me. But yes, I also mostly like the third score.

It's based on a Michael Crichton book that could be great or awful, depending on when it was actually written, but the score is probably the last really brilliant sci-fi score in existence.

I love how she is portrayed in the Animated Series. After that, they turned her into some in sort of quasi-stripper, teenager-sexual-fantasy thing, and the character was all the worse for it

I have no idea how this segment passed JW's scrutiny. It's one of the worst treatments of a JW theme I have ever heard:
