  1. I'm surprised no one has mentioned that John Williams was the first choice to write this score. This movie was cheated at the Oscars in more ways than Elfman's score, the themes of which are ALMOST as good as the Grail theme and "No Ticket" from "Last Crusade." Jack Nicholson should have been nominated for an Oscar.
  2. In no way do I want to jinx his chances, but when the Academy Award nominations are announced on Jan. 22, it could be the first time in 16 years that John Williams is not nominated for writing an original score. In 1992, Williams wrote "Far and Away" and "Home Alone 2." He was not one of the five nominees. Every year since then, if he has written an original score, he has been nominated at least once. This is assuming "Crystal Skull" is deemed to be an original work by Academy standards. Way too many previous themes for me to consider it original enough, but I am not an Academy member and do not have access to the list of scores eligible this year. So I don't even know if voters can even consider it when voting. Just wanted to give you that piece of trivia.
  3. Damn. I think I was the only JW fan living in the United States who missed the premiere of "A Timeless Call" last night. This is what happens when work and life take you away from fun on the computer for months.
  4. I thought it was a great line. I'm sure Sean Connery is laughing real hard. He's so happy he didn't agree to do the movie.
  5. I didn't think the writers would devote the entire season to the rescue process, so I can't begin to imagine what's in store for the final two seasons. Like many people, I'm just going to sit back and enjoy. As far a all this talk about Jin still being alive: If he really is alive, it will be the greatest copout in the history of the show. If he appears as a ghost, fine. But if he walks into Sun's home as if nothing happened or washes up on the island post-move, I'm going to be real pissed.
  6. Don't tire yourself out, Jeff. You've got a birthday of your own to celebrate in a couple days. Wow! Thanks for rememberig my birthday. I'm going to a birthday dinner tonight and will officially drink to John's and my birthday. Jeff -- finishing up the 13th annual John Williams Film Festival
  7. Happy birthday! I was going to write some elaborately wonderful prose, but I'm too tired.
  8. The music in "There Will Be Blood" when the well blows up. I think it's one of Jonny Greenwood's previously written pieces, which is why I couldn't find it on the score album on iTunes.
  9. Plus, his mom died a week after last year's show. No one deserves to be holding an Oscar this year more than Kevin O'Connell. By the way, did you notice the three nominations for "Enchanted" in the song category? Awesome! Can't wait to see Amy Adams perform. But I'm pulling for "Falling Slowly." And I'm glad they didn't hitch onto the Eddie Vedder bandwagon. As far as the score nominees, I'm pulling for Marianelli, which means he won't win. This year's list of score nominees, "Atonement" aside, is quite pedestrian. Next year, as we know, it will get more interesting.
  10. Wrong. He lost because the voters didn't want to deal with listening to all the scores in the Original Musical or Comedy Score and went with the movie they all knew about and were voting for elsewhere: "Shakespeare in Love." I think they remembered the songs more than the score, which has been described here as inferior to the score. Which they were. While we're on the topic of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," I agree it's Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz's best collaboration. They lost the Oscar because voters didn't think Menken deserved NINE Oscars, so they gave it to Rachel Portman, who wouldn't have stood a chance if "Pochahontas" hadn't been released the year before. Voters didn't want another "Beauty" and "Aladdin" double win. It's all so terribly political, and ignorant, when looking back on many of the Oscar winners for Original Score. At least they were fine with giving a lesbian an Oscar for writing a song for Al Gore's documentary.
  11. That's because in this scene there's a TV show that uses "Beauty and the Beast" as underscore. Other than that, it's the first time he's put music from previous films in his scores. "That's How You Know" could have only been done by Alan Menken. I think the lyrics are fun, but the melody was so catchy I hummed it all day after. That's what makes him one of the best songwriters alive today.
  12. This was a great year for original movie songs. Not such a good year for original movie scores. Besides "Order of the Phoenix," I can't recall anything standing out musically.
  13. After "The Empire Strikes Back," this is the score most robbed of the Oscar.
  14. If you have HDNet Movies, you can catch "Family Plot" this Sunday and on Dec. 11. A chance to hear a rare score from a rarely shown movie!!!!!
  15. Good Lord, me too! And in Atlanta, of all places, where I live/study. Come to think of it, I've been seeing these "Swim/diving parking $5" signs around campus, but maybe that's for some other event. fsb No, it's the same event. I specifically titled the thread the way I did to get you guys thinking he made a personal appearance.
  16. In Atlanta this weekend is USA Swimming's national championships. They're streaming it live, and were just presenting the awards for a women's event and a men's event. For the women's event, they played "Superman." (For women) And for the men, they got "Star Wars." Just to put it in perspective, they usually play heavy-metal music. I've never heard instrumental music in my 15-plus years of being involved in elite swimming. Yea, JW!
  17. "Home Alone" and Whitney Houston's version of "Do You Hear What I Hear?" are pretty much all I listen to relating to Christmas music.
  18. ET (especially "The Magic of Halloween" and "ET is Dying" and "Escape/Chase/Goodbye") makes me cry. The others just give me goosebumps. I will say that "Journey to the Island" is one of the best action cues Williams has written.
  19. Do you guys realize what you're asking for? You're going to get something like "The Phantom Menace: Special Edition." I'd love to have everything from "Temple of Doom," but will it be worth it?
  20. This is what we would have seen at the Oscars in 2002 if Debbie Allen had been the choreographer. The thing is, the theme is not a dance of lovers. It's a theme for a little boy who wouldn't think about girls for four years. Most of the music on the show is not properly picked to match the dance.
  21. Don't forget that amazing score By Gustav Holst.
