  1. I think there's a difference, though slight. You're mentioning favorite scenes, which for me all exist post-1980. As far as movies go, the same holds simply because I was raised in the MTV era. For my brother, who is 10 years older, he frequently talks about all those B movies he loved going to when he was younger, and how he loved watching the Irwin allen disaster flm son the big screen. So it has some effect on your generation. But, the best movies created....a good lot of them are from the 1950-1970 golden age. And even those from the MTV era could agree with that. Jeff -- who is going to watch Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid -- definitely belonging to the aforementioned best movies list -- tonight
  2. All About Eve, The Defiant Ones, Whatever Happed to Baby Jane?, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? All three viewed in the last two weeks. Great films. They really knew how to make 'em.
  3. I think this poll should have waited until Catch Me If You Can is released. I'd like to say that JW will get another double, but it's hard to say. This time last year, I was saying that Harry Potter wouldn't stand a chance of being nominated for score, based on the fact that it's a kid's movie. Then I saw the trailer, and then the movie. Changed my mind right away. Maybe we'll have to resurrect this poll in January.
  4. eek2 You still have much to learn, my very young apprentice. Jeff -- who doesn't think any composer is currently overrated
  5. Ren, I adored your Moulin Rouge pics. I never had any major problem with them. As far as Hector, I don't like the fact that his current one overlaps into subsequent posts. That's annoying as hell. I think photo signatures should be allowed. Just keep them tasteful and small (like the equivalent of five lines). Jeff -- who probably will never use an avatar or photo signature -- a comment that will provoke some to most likely question my involvement in this topic
  6. Believe me, this IS the wrong way. When reading the books, you'll also love not knowing what's going to happen. You do however have lots of clues and hints. The biggest fun in the books is that you're constantly trying to figure out how it's all going to fit together, and yet you'll be totally surprised at the end. It's basically just what you liked about the film - but while the film is great, that's just what's so much, much more better about the books. Believe me, you're ruining it if you watch the movies first. Marian - worried. You make a very intelligent and heartfelt plea, Marian. I am seriously considering picking up the books. I'll need something to read on vacation, anyway.
  7. I didn't catch the Harry Potter hype until just before the film was released. Therefore, I didn't read the books before the film. That said, I absolutely love the film, and am certain that the book's appeal across all ages is evident. I think that JK Rowling did a good job with creating characters, giving them exciting adventures and even a lot of heart. But I won't read the books. I loved not knowing what would happen next in the film, and I want to keep that anticipation for the remainder. After the series is over, I'll revisit Harry in the books. Jeff -- who generally doesn't read a lot of fiction
  8. It's been a joy and an honor (American spelling) to chat with you Ren. beerchug
  9. i hope he wore protection LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL jump1 That was -- no, still is -- funny, Ren!
  10. Of course it's fading. There's only one left! OK, OK, to be serious now. It's kind of like The Godfather, part 3. I never heard one person say it was the best of the three. But if there were indeed to be a fourth film (kind of like seeing Andy Garcia's character in power), people would be hesitant, but they'd still go. Same with Star Wars. People will still go to see the final film, but I doubt many will be running to the box office as quickly as they were in 1977, 1980, 1983 or 1999. Like a relationship that maybe shouldn't have lasted as long as it has, we all need closure at this point.
  11. there are actors who would give anything to have a once in a lifetime role such as Ferris Bueller. The more I see of this film the more I am convinced that the Academy got best actor 1986 all wrong. Sorry Paul Newman, you won a makeup award, for surviving as long as you have. Sorry Bob Hoskins, William Hurt, Dexter Gordon, and James Woods, none of you gave the performance that Matthew did as Ferris. Not one of the films of the 5 nominee's for best actors has stood the test of time these last 16 years. Ferris Bueller, your my hero. I second that, Joe. But I believe Alan Ruck deserved a supporting actor nomination more tham Matthe deserved a leading actor nod. He stole every single scene. He was simply the best part of the film (well, maybe just a little better than Edie McClurg).
  12. I got one!!!! Matthew Borderick. And don't say he's not a big star. He's done some modest movies, and one excellent one (Ferris Bueller's Day Off). How about another one!!! Sharon Stone! LOL Though I would like to imagine how JW would have scored Basic Instinct.
  13. I never blamed Williams. I never blamed Wannberg. I always like to blame Burtt. In the original trilogy, it seemed he and Williams knew how each other worked. Now, it just seems like they're at odds. Which is why Wiliams' music in AOTC sounds a lot like it's just screaming above the sound effects instead of actually scoring the picture.
  14. Welcome Charlie. Hope you have fun here. Just make sure you know your stuff. Jeff -- who sometimes doesn't know his stuff, but fakes it anyway
  15. Those words are never to be spoken here again.
  16. I have no idea what you're talking about...which is why I'll just keep my mouth shut.
  17. I had to hold off on this discussion for a couple of days, but now I'm ready....sort of! I rented both LOTR and FOTR this weekend. Since I have not read the books (or book, depending on how you see it), I stopped after the first hour of LOTR. But from what I heard, i wasn't too impressed with Rosenman's score. Not that much texture and coherence to it. On the other hand, FOTR is a much better score than I gave it credit for back in December. The use of chorus and the themes are quite remarkable, and they never sound cheesy or overdone. My two favorite parts of the score are the attack by the ringwraiths on that mountain (when Frodo gets stabbed the first time) and the journey down the river (as they go past the huge statues of the kings). Great orchestration in both cues. As much it pains me to say this......................... (deep breath) Howard Shore deserved his Oscar. AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGG! So I voted for FOTR. In two years, I'll rent LOTR after I know the complete story and I'll give the score another listen.
  18. Didn't know you sent a letter with it. That's cool.
  19. Maybe so, Mag. And saying that there's a ***spoiler****major battle****end of spoiler***** in a Star Wars movie is like saying there's a ***spoiler***a sex scene***end of spoiler*** in a teen comedy. Jeff -- who is certain that Williams wants to spill the beans about this "travesty."
  20. It's obvious that a part of the main theme (Luke's theme) is in Across the Stars. It's also somehwat obvious that the tonality of the theme is based on Leia's theme. It's obvious foreshadowing: Luke and Leia (and their themes) are to be the offspring of the lovers (and their theme). I thought it was a very interesting development of a theme, very much like Anakin's theme. As far as it sounding like something else...I think you're going to find that pretty much all music sounds like something else. As I have said before, I'm no musicologist, but I believe there comes a point when some musical rhythms and notes are bound to be repeated. Some composers are more obvious and blatant than others (they actually plagarize either themselves or others), while others tip their hats. I don't see people yelling about the fact that the opening of Star Wars (when the ships are going over the screen) is a direct "homage" to "Mars, the Bringer of War." Or maybe I was absent the day that was discussed. Jeff -- who thinks Across the Stars redeems the wallpaper feel of most of the AOTC score and that hack job near the end.
  21. I'll second fivetone's pick with the moment when we see the lions in AI (actually, it starts with the trumpets as David and Joe are shown looking at it). Then, Marian's choice of the sinister statement of the Imperial March in The Empire Strikes Back when Vader enters the base. And Obi-John's pick of the final duel in ROTJ. So operatic. As for me, I like any time JW does a crescendo. He does it better than anyone. The best one is in The Empire Strikes Back, as Leia, Lando, Chewie and the droids are trying to escape Cloud City. There's the love theme as R2 opens the door, then a majestic swell as they are running to the ship. Just beautiful. Can't think of any other spine-tingling, goosebump-creating, smile-inducing JW moments that can top it.
  22. I'm the only who voted for the Sacrifice theme. It's so haunting, so chilling. Every time I listen to it on Cd or in the film, it gives me goosebumps. I like the reprise during the fight on the bridge, too.
  23. But to get back to the topic at hand... I love the idea of a bracket system. That would be really cool. After we get the 64 scores together, the hard part would be putting the right scores against each other. Maybe like, NCAA basketball, you can give them a preliminary ranking, either randomly or based on the list maker's choice. Then put the scores head to head and have us vote. This could be interesting if it works out.
  24. I live in Clayton. Very close to the Galleria mall. All this time, and I never looked at Gamecube's hometown.... I was born and raised in Florissant! Went to high school at St. Louis University High School.
  25. That sounds like a featurette I'd watch more than the movie! And we're not getting it!! bawling To see Williams conducting the Chase cue would be incredible. As would seeing him talking about the love theme. But that brings up a question....isn't Han and Leia's theme a love theme? Let's see...it shows up every time they talk about something romantic or they are being romantic.....seems like a love theme to me. Maybe they're talking about a fully developed theme with an entire track and everything. :?
