Maybe they'll turn it into a plot point. Han Solo twists his ankle in the first scene, says he's too old for this shit. And then introduce the new cast. We could have even a Force-ankle-twisting villain.

I just got back from the movie. I thought the soundtrack had quite a few missed opportunities. I think Desplat's lack of compositional traiining is becoming evident on huge budget films. Most audiences won't notice but it is like a chef who covers their recipes with butter, sugar, and garlic. 95% of people will find it delicious but other chefs will recognize the lack of skillfull deployment of the various elements and techniques and the artists disposal. I do believe Desplat's more advanced and smarter than most film composers working today, but I prefer the days of Goldsmith/Williams/Rozsa, etc. You won't find it here. You will find substantially better "monster" music than we've heard in a long time. Just imagine how great this score could have been with Goldenthal, Davis, or Horner. The two big issues I have are the lack of memoral melodic material and the lack of vortiosity in the composition. Yes, yes, a cluster can be effective for monster stomping but it doesn't show skillful use of the elements of music. Some will say, who cares, but that goes back to my analogy of chefs cooking with butter, sugar etc. This could easilly have been written by Giacchinao in his Star Trek score or Ramin Djawadi in Pacific Rim. Ultimately forgettable and full of missed opportunities with an unnecessarilly large orchestra since it is closely mic'ed. Characters were pretty lame. Special effects were very solid. Story was as expected...basic monster mashup. Think "Indepednence Day" meets "Pacific Rim". A fun mindless flick but no sense of structure nor ingenuity. I had hoped for more but shouldn't have expected it.

Not Mr. Big reacted to Quintus in Do you *really* think Shore's LOTR is as good as Williams' Star Wars OT?
Disagree, I think they add signature Williams precision to the drama of the cue, they inject urgency and dramatic clarity; a quality of pace and definition famously lacking in Shore's often extremely ponderous LotR underscore.

I think Star Wars is the superior score, but The Lord of the Rings is the superior work. I know that sounds strange, but bear with me!
To me, Williams is the better composer and always will be. But! And it's a big but, the level of detail and narrative structure that Shore managed to create in the year he dedicated to LOTR is simply stupefying! He really pushed the limits of what he was capable of as a composer and Shore's trilogy literally was a hell of lot more work than either Star Wars trilogy has been for Williams. LOTR may not have the same polish or finesse that Star Wars has, but I think it more than makes up for that fact in the pure sincerity of the blood, sweat and tears that went into that monstrous production.

Meh. This isn't surprising but it's still disappointing.
His music doesn't have the gravity necessary to sell the drama. Plus his music has terrible orchestration and mixing (ST-ID included).

Starting to seem that way. Outside of film and music circles, I doubt you'd hear much of Herrmann. At my school, I'd guess that, of the entire film program, 3-5 people know of him. Two, if you're lucky, could name more than one of his works. Granted, most of the people studying film here are f**kwits, I wouldn't be surprised if this is common at other universities.
I've never understood why film students aren't given a mandatory film music class. It'd be invaluable. You need to know film music in order to utilize it properly in a film. Half of the independent films I see have shit music. Nearly every student film I've seen has shit music.
    True shame...
