I'm really struck by how much Helena's theme dominates the OST compared to Indy's theme especially in the action music.

From what I heard, she dominates much of the film. Seeing it Thursday so can't say for sure yet but based on some reviews I've read plus two friends that saw it, it's as much a "Helena" film as an Indy...

  2. I've listened to it once and though I couldn't give it my full attention, I did try to dedicate a few minutes. The sound quality is definitely an improvement to my ears but it isn't dramatic. The last release was excellent as well and if the new LLL didn't exist, you'd never hear a complaint from me on the previous one. It's a bit "clearer" if that makes sense. Having the correct takes and bonus tracks is welcome as well.

For those like me who love the score, this is an absolute no-brainer. Buy it immediately. For those who have never heard of it, it's one of the most fun and quirky Goldsmith works there is. I am certainly biased because the film is an all-time personal favorite, but honestly, I'd recommend this to anyone. It's just a lot of fun and never fails to make me smile. If you've already got the previous expanded edition and have to choose between The 'Burbs and other titles in the Black Friday bunch, I'd say go for the others as this is the least changed since its last release. But I love it. :)

Once I learned how to reconfigure OST albums into chronological order, I did so with Jurassic Park and never looked back.

I do feel that OST albums should be preserved on expansions whenever it is reasonable to do so, but this particular OST configuration Williams put together I still feel misses the mark, especially since the complete score is not that much longer and flows amazingly well in chronological sequence - though it's the exact repetitions of 2 entire cues that really does it for me.  I wish "Theme From Jurassic Park" was entirely newly recorded instead of just a new intro and outro pasted onto the film cue!

I completely agree. If this were any other score assembled this way, I’d likely be exactly the same. In this instance though, the OST is burned into my mind from nonstop play as a kid. I’m certainly not arguing the OST is the superior arrangement (though I do love good OSTs), but rather that this specific OST (warts and all) is very personally special to me.

  4. There isn't any music from Home Alone in the film that I'm aware of. The first two Santa Claus films are nostalgic for me (especially the music). I even picked up the promo score release of the second film for quite a bit not too long ago. Anyways, I am not aware of any spots where it uses Home Alone music at all. I'll keep my ears open when it's playing in the background of our constant Christmas movie Plex playlists.

I think the only reason to use something from a fan is when it truly cannot be found anywhere else, and the fan's material is the only known source.  But that can't be the case with Hook.  There is no reason whatsoever to think that Sony Pictures doesn't have all of the original 1st gen tapes in their vaults.  I think we simply have a case where Didier did not get them, and just stuck with the material they had at Sony Music.  If the project could had been done by Mike instead of Didier, I'm sure more usual procedures would have been followed and he would have gotten everything Sony Pictures has and used that.  And the only reason we'd be talking about the leak was for its clean openings and endings and that's about it.

Right there with you buddy.  It's kinda funny, that for me, even though expansions of the Star Wars scores, Indiana Jones scores, and Hook already exist, I personally would love to have proper MM versions of all of those more than all the JW scores that have never been expanded.  Don't get me wrong, I absolutely want all those too, but I've been dreaming of truly definitive Hook, SW, and IJ since I was a kid and know I will play them all a heck of a lot when they finally happen

Oh 100%. I agree. I just meant that I would not let the fact that fan was the source stop me from using it. Of course if I had the legitimate source material, that's what I would use. I only meant that the (to me) it would be silly to not consider using material from a fan simply because it was from a fan, leak, etc.

As for your second paragraph, I agree wholeheartedly. I obviously want all of JW's unreleased/unexpanded work too, but if I had to choose, I'd take proper, MM-produced versions of Star Wars, Indy, and Hook. It might not get a ton of attention (outside of a place like this) in the public consciousness, but Hook is a top-tier film score for me and a personal favorite with so much sentimental value to me. I really hope I can add a proper presentation to my library someday.  And for the record, I of course have the LLL and OST. I'm not depriving myself of "good" while holding out for "perfect."
