What would you do with an extra Reivers disc?
BigMacGyver replied to BurgaFlippinMan's topic in General Discussion
There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers. -
That's not what I mean. Debut scores are so different in terms of the composer's skills and experience by the time he composed the score that any comparison is unfair, not that these scores are all the same. For example, Alan Silvestri was barely 20 when he got to score the doberman gang out of pure luck without any knowledge about a film score and only being experienced in touring with a band. Bernard herrmann, on the other hand, was already a well-experienced composer who knew how to handle an orchestra due to his educational background. But saying that the Doberman gang is worse than Herrman's score is difficult, because compared to the knowledge both composers had at the time, they both did the best they could with the tools and practice they had.

What would you do with an extra Reivers disc?
BigMacGyver replied to BurgaFlippinMan's topic in General Discussion
Well, I knew Joe would say that. Anyways, the CD is probably worth 30 to 40 € (36 to 46 US-$). Jane Eyre was mentioned before, but I believe that one is harder to find and goes for a bit more. That being said, I still don't have the reivers but somehow I believe there is a chance for a re-issue maybe even with expanded treatment because it was on Columbia records and FSM is currently checking them out, so I will wait a bit before I pay an insane horror price on this title. -
There is no best debut score. Film Composers come from such varied backgrounds with such a different amount of experience that it would be injustice to put one debut score from one composer over the debut score from a different composer.

I believe the most recent example of a DVD with iso score is Corpse Bride with elfman's music on a separate track. Not sure which region this is though.

No problem. Oh, btw I am male before you get your hopes up I guess the majority of folks at this and any other filmmusic board are male Interesting phenomenon.

What is JNH's Best Shyamalan Score?
BigMacGyver replied to SturgisPodmore's topic in General Discussion
Signs, though elaborating is a little difficult because there is so much to mention why this score is so great and effective that I simply don't know where to start. JNH understanding of silence as musical decision plays a huge part here but also the subtle musical hints to previous alien invasion classics without turning the score into a rip-off. It's one of the best and most captivating thriller scores out there IMO. -
Tracked cues are pieces of music that were put into a scene or context where they originally don't belong to or weren't meant to be by the Composer of the piece. For example, a piece of music is used in the opening of the film but the director feels the need to have this exact same music during the finale, so he takes the piece from the beginning and tracks it into the finale scene. Today's editing technologies makes such changes possible within a heartbeat, which is IMO, a downside of the technology.

john williams is awesome and so is hans zimmer!
BigMacGyver replied to sweethaley85's topic in General Discussion
Interesting! What would be feminine music then? I have a problem with giving music freudian sexual characteristics. If I would do so, Hans Zimmer's music probably would be best described as gay: Penetrating my ears with its monstrous size while being overladden with moaning male choir. -
JW question to hardcore fans - filmfootage of ESB sessions?
BigMacGyver replied to BigMacGyver's topic in General Discussion
I wonder if someone could license the BBC material and use it in combination with newly shot material about williams to create a feature film length documentary. That would be a great job for the folks from music from the movies and their DVD series. Maybe we should bombard them with emails? -
A heads-up for Silvestri fans - new CDs on the way!
BigMacGyver replied to BigMacGyver's topic in General Discussion
In a universal archive, waiting anxiously for the day it will get released on CD. I would not hold my breath on this one. At least not in the near future. -
A heads-up for Silvestri fans - new CDs on the way!
BigMacGyver replied to BigMacGyver's topic in General Discussion
Hey, rob. You are in for a big surprise: Not FSM, but Tadlow music is going to release Rosza's complete score including the violin concert but it's a re-recording of the same quality as their recent Guns of Navarone and True Grit reconstructions. Maybe not a 3-CD set and not the original tracks but at least something According to Ford A. Thaxton, the original tracks are lost. However, that's what he said about Garcia's The Time Machine as well Furthermore, there is an update on the legend of mythica CD. Besides Alan Silvestri's music, it will feature japanese dialogue, so score fans might want to think twice before ordering this CD and ending up disappointed. However, I am still trying hard to get further infos about how much dialogue there is and wether or not it interfers with the music. -
The Witches of Eastwick Collector's Choice CD
BigMacGyver replied to robthehand's topic in General Discussion
No problem, I am very interested in solving this mystery just like anyone else. Again, I can't give any guarantees beyond my flawless copy. My copy is just one among thousands, so please be aware that there could still be copies with the error out there. We can't be sure and that's a really big problem. It's frustrating that collector's choice don't want to clear things up. We deserve that. -
Listen to the quidditch match and pay attention to the percussion and cymbals when the fanfare comes up. You can't miss it. There is a whole series of them. The boom-tss at the end of 1941 end credits is a bit quiet but probably the only really isolated one.

Will contain some bonus features. News have been revealed about the MftM project. It will become a series of docus with more releases already in the works! -
The end credits from 1941 end with a very calm boom-tss. I remember hearing it all over that score. Does anyone know composers who use this as frequently as Williams?

Jaws Original Album vs Jaws 2000 Recording Album
BigMacGyver replied to Damo's topic in General Discussion
I don't have the re-recording and never thought about buying it because I already own the original release and the Collector's edition. Both, OST and Collector's Edition, provide such a different listening experience it's a difference like between day and night. For a long time, the OST was the only thing I had and I was shocked when I heard the Collector's edition because it is just so different. I also think that they did a little bit too much of digital tricks because it sounds too thin and some stuff is volumed down way too much. I always find myself fiddling on the volume regulation of my Hi-Fi while listening to this CD. But I got used to the sound pretty qickly and both CDs make good companion pieces. I always listen to them in a row, so I have no particular favourite. -
JW question to hardcore fans - filmfootage of ESB sessions?
BigMacGyver replied to BigMacGyver's topic in General Discussion
Sounds like really cool stuff. How long is this documentary? Is it really complete with narration, interviews and all that or is it just the raw footage for something that was supposed to become a documentary? Does anyone know why exactly this isn't available in any form and such a rarity? Was there a copyright issue? I mean one would think that a documentary about the greatest film composer still alive would be something one would proudly distribute instead of hiding it away in some dusty archive. Especially if it has exclusive footage of him conducting the sessions of his greatest score. Means there are bootleg copies floating around? -
This is a question to you guys who know every little detail about all kinds of publications related to JW: Once I read at the FSM board about a BBC (?) documentary which shows John Williams at the sessions of Empire Strikes Back, more exactly it shows him conducting the entire Asteroid Field sequence. But this footage along with the entire doku has never been released in any form and only made appearances during special viewings. Really, I don't know if any of this is true or what this docu is actually about (jw or just ESB in general). Does anyone know more about this or knows if bootleg copies of this footage exists? FSMs search engine is messed up so unfortunately it is impossible to find this topic. I am not even sure if it was at FSM.

New MftM composer docu coming on DVD
BigMacGyver replied to BigMacGyver's topic in General Discussion
Al! Al! -
According to insider infos, musicfromthemovies continues their success of the goldsmith docu with a new docu but no info has been revealed which composer it will be focused on. The shooting of the docu is already finished and it is now going into post-production. A release should be expected in early 2007. More infos and other things are expected to be revealed in fall 2006 on the MftM website.

A heads-up for Silvestri fans - new CDs on the way!
BigMacGyver replied to BigMacGyver's topic in General Discussion
Of course not all rumours are so strong Some may just turn out to be fanboy hoax. Remember the indy trilogy re-recordings? That's why I put them on as rumour and not news. The irony is that John Carl Parker composed the CHiPs main theme but Alan Silvestri provided a strong re-arrangement of it, I believe for the 2nd season's openings with strong, early Silvestri-trademarks. -
A heads-up for Silvestri fans - new CDs on the way!
BigMacGyver replied to BigMacGyver's topic in General Discussion
The release was rumoured since mid 2005. Let me guarantee that the rumour is very strong and comes from people-in-the-knows. Besides that, it fits the latest clue like a glove. I'd say chances are 90% that one of the next two FSM releases will be CHiPs. -

Copy/pasted this from my page for you: A number of CD releases with music composed and conducted by the man himself will hit the road during late July/early August. First, his music for DisneySea Tokyo's 5th anniversary show The Sea Legend Of Mythica (2006) will be released on CD on July 19th followed by the long rumoured Film Score Monthly release of his early work for the cop TV series CHiPs (1977-1983) which is expected to be announced through the label's website at the end of July while Silva Screen Records dedicated a compilation to him as a part of their Film Music Masterworks series which will contain Silvestri themes recorded by the City Of Prague Philharmonic and comes out on late August/early September. In addition to that, Intrada's third Amazing Stories Anthology release will include his score for the Bob Zemeckis episode Go To The Head Of The Class. It is expected to come out late summer.
