  1. I know who my winner is: And the Andy goes to... John Williams for Memoirs of a Geisha! That's all that matters to me. Let Santa have that worthless trophy. Williams has way more anyways and will be scoring big movies when Santa is already forgotten. I give him one year and no one will even remember that Santa-guy, his guitar and his worthless oscar anymore. Unlike Williams, whose countless great scores, inspiration and talent will be remembered and stand the test of time. He does not need the academy anymore because he is standing above it all. A man who has multiple nominations per year but does not win because of that is obviously too good for the statue.
  2. The magic word is BOOTLEG! But those shabby times are over! It is available! PS.: You might not want to listen to me because my reaction is so incredibly based. I loved this score since i was a kid. Yeah, i even noticed the bits that stayed in the film back then. Gozer's theme is big and terrifying, Dana's theme is beautiful and the piano ghostbusters theme is hilarious. Plus: this is one of the few later bernstein scores with an ondes where the instrument's sound is fully appropriate. for more info, check my review of the boot here
  3. Because it was terribly butchered in favour of the songs.
  4. I am extatic! I have waited endlessly for that to happen! My favourite Bernstein score is finally available outside of the crappy song CD! How varese pulled that out of the hat is a mystery to me but I had to order this the moment i saw it. 8O
  5. You may want to check Film Music Radio
  6. I did not exactly keep track with the entire discussion but I want to point something out to TimeAfterTime: Some time ago, I did some improvisation on the piano and came across a beautiful melody that i wrote down for a possible use. Recently, i listened to some samples of Alexandre Desplat's score for Le Chateau Des Singes and came across the exact same melody. These things rather happen accidentally since there are millions of people around the world who create music. Today, it is simply impossible to be original without becoming unlistenable. But i guess this would deserve an entirely new topic because this discussion already went much further. Regarding this topic's question: I think it is unfair to say that Williams ego is getting bigger because nobody here actually knows the person John Williams, only the composer. That's a huge difference in my eyes.
  7. I am afraid the list of OOP releases is certainly much longer than the list of in-print titles
  8. Yeah, the Film Score Monthly release of Patton has recently sold out. But i believe the iso-score contains a little bit more music including a recording sessions excerpt with experimentations of the echoing trumpets.
  9. Wow, empire is voted off in the first round. How ridiculous.
  10. Schindler's List is a good choice. The entire score is like an intense emotional attack especially if you have seen the film. Actually, I barely listen to it for that reason because it is so moving and could get me into a sad mood. If you plan to purchase more JW scores, keep in mind that there are some that are (or will be) out of print. The complete 2-CD set of Superman: The Movie is reportedly OOP but still easy to find at a fairly good price. Nixon is OOP but relatively easy to find and still cheap. Screen Archives still has copies of his intimate score for The River for normal retail price. A couple of important scores are OOP and extremely hard to find at reasonable prices: JFK, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Temple of Doom, Last Crusade, Jaws 2, Witches Of Eastwick and Dracula. If you find any of these used and for a good price, grab them! As far as in-print releases are concerned, i can only agree to the other suggestions: E.T. (expanded) is a must-have as well as Jaws, Close Encounters (collector's edition), Jurassic Park and Hook.
  11. The sound quality is a plus over the original release and the cues you mentioned. Other than that, i can't think of much more positive things about this release.
  12. Alan Silvestri - He already delivered a bunch of scores that became icons (BTTF, Forrest Gump, Predator to name a few) as well as overlooked master pieces (siegfried & roy, the polar express) and continues with even bigger things on Beowulf and (hopefully) When Worlds Collide. Certainly the most promising candidate in the category "future giants of film scoring".
  13. No because this comment was not meant as a hint.
  14. Dutch, Young Guns 2, Blown Away, Judge Dredd (expanded)... the list goes on. There is a new interview with Alan Silvestri on Colonne Sonore where he mentions that the release of Judgment Night actually happened by accident because Joel Stiller bought the music rights to a couple of films and one of them was JN. Maybe some more releases will materialize due to the effort of that man?
  15. Seems so. People will always hope for a BTTF or Temple of Doom... those popular scores that are unlikely to be released as limited editions and in the end, people are disappointed with the goodies that come out. My money is on Boys From Brazil and the usual LP/CD reissue which is enough of prediction for me. I will take the other releases as pleasant surprises. BTW, there are a handful of silvestri scores besides BTTF that are more likely to come as LTD edition.
  16. They can't release it for a number of reasons. First, MCA is holding the rights and since the OST is still in print and a very good seller, they won't give up the rights so easily. Then, there are re-use fees which are horridly high.
  17. Not only expensive but the 45 minute length sucks. They should give us 2-CD sets already.
  18. For me, it is a tie between ET and ESB followed by Close Encounters and Hook.
  19. People over at the FSM board take GMC as a serious possibility for that 3-CD set and FSM'ers have always been good at playing guessing games. As far as budgeting is concerned, i will most certainly not be able to toss out 34,95 after varese released the club CDs on march 6th.
  20. Roger Feigelson stated that this is not a hint and therefore not refering to any releases that may come up soon. Seems like they have grown tired of their own guessing game LOL
  21. I am afraid an expanded set of Hook is not going to happen in the near future, at least not from FSM.
  22. I don't know how long the complete score actually runs but I understand there are several songs in that musical film and there tend to be more than just one version of a song (instrumental, film version, single version, etc). Maybe the album material from the LP differs so much from the actual film recording that they included both (for example, if it contains the complete score in mono and album tracks in stereo). There might be an entirely alternate recording like with Mutiny On The Bounty. But yeah, maybe it is something entirely different. El Cid comes to mind.
  23. From the FSM news letter for former charter members: The release of Williams' score for Goodbye, Mr. Chips from FSM has long been speculated. According to latest rumours, the release was delayed due to additional material that has been discovered and maybe this is a good reason why the announced 3-CD set could contain this 60's williams work.
  24. This is somehow JW-related rumours: Intrada records is probably going to announce a release of Alan Parker's score for Jaws 3-D soon. At least the hint from Doug Fake does fit:
